Taking opportunities now is never late but tomorrow might be too late.Today has its challenges but also its opportunities to respond to the challenges. In the workplace many of us strive to be perfectionists but here is the truth: no one is perfect. Being perfect reduces our performance and it takes us longer to achieve our daily objectives. Mistakes will occur but the greatest lesson is to learn from it and to try not to repeat the same mistakes. Now is not the time to be perfect when taking on a challenge, but it is simply the time to respond to challenges in the workplace so that tomorrow we can get promoted to the next level.“The time for action is now. It’s never too late to do something”, were the words of an French author named Antoine de Saint-Exupery. ‘Now’ allows us to have a opportunity to make decisions that can change our tomorrow. The worst thing in life is not using our time wisely today, because it can affect our futures. This week’s news shares people and organisations’ success stories because those people all decided to take action the moment a vision and purpose was imparted in their hearts. They were men and women that said to themselves ‘Now, I will take action’. An entrepreneur of an organisation’s biggest success principal that needs to be applied in order to drive an organisation to reaching its objectives on a day-to-day basis, is simply taking action now to solve problems that will hinder the organisation from striving. Procrastination must not have an opening in our lives because it can rob us from our destiny. According to Wikipedia, Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task which needs to be accomplished. As the Editor of the newspaper the true pleasure is seeing the newspaper striving and not just surviving. Getting to hear much more stories on a day-to-day basis empowers one to share the story with the world. Any story can happen at any moment and that is the true beauty of success. A million doller idea can come to mind right now, and what we do now with that idea can change many things. Let us share our stories now with the world because our stories now are the stories that empowers someone out there to make a turning point today and change their future.

Now Is NEVER Late

The Dawn Park SAPS started an initiative to invite young girls in primary schools around Dawn Park to be part of their project called ‘Take a girl child to work’.On Friday, 27 May 2016, Dawn Park primary girls and other various school girls in the area attended the day with

great expectation and anticipation to come learn what the Dawn Park SAPS had to offer.Mrs Florence Sithole, Support Head of the SAPS, started the initiative and pointed out it is the SAPS objective to teach young girls about career keys in the police industry.“Our youth is getting the wrong impression of what we as the SAPS do. They all think that a police

officer’s job is to get people arrested all the time and through this intiative we want to teach them that its much more than that. We are going to introduce them to some other careers in the SAPS such as psychology, chaplains and social workers. This will empower them to look into these different careers that the SAPS has to offer”, said Sithole

Drinking and driving is one of the factors contributing significantly to the unacceptable carnage on our public roads. In an earnest effort to not let it continue unabated, the EMPD conducted “ Ke Molao Operation” (it’s the law) from 17:00 on Friday (20 May) until 1am on Saturday (21 May). A total of thirty-one (31) drivers were arrested in Katlehong Vosloorus and Tokoza. Metro police officers closed in

on Sontonga, Siluma, Bosworth, Brickfield, Potgieter, Thutong, Masakhane and Heidleburg (R103) roads where the thirty-one drivers who included one female were arrested. The suspects ages ranged between 29 and 64. Charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol were registered at the Alberton, Katlehong, Vosloorus and Tokoza police stations against the arrestees.

EMPD TACKLES DRINKING AND DRIVING

“Let’s all protect children to move South Africa forward” is the theme of Child Protection Week 2016, which runs from 29 May to 5 June. ADT Inland Region general manager Theunis Kotze said children of all ages were vulnerable to criminals, some of which can have very sinister motives. He said he had recorded incidents related to children walking home from school, during which their cell phone or bicycle was stolen at knifepoint or where they’d reported being followed or offered a lift by strangers. He offered the following tips and has advised parents teach these to their children: - Stay calm. Unless you feel it’s a life-and-

death situation, don’t fight back; just hand over your phone or whatever else the criminals want so that they can leave.

- Check them out. Try to get a good look at the criminal and memorise their physical details and clothing, as well as the vehicle they’re in, and listen for other clues which may identify them later.

- Gather your groupies. Always walk in a group and stick to streets you know – no shortcuts!

- No bling! Keep cellphones, earphones, etc. out of sight at all times.

- Stay put! Wait inside the gate if you’re being picked up from school.

EMPOWER YOUR CHILDREN

- Keep walking. Never get into a stranger’s car, even if they are super friendly or say that someone in your family

is hurt and that they’ve been sent to pick you up. Remember your mom and dad won’t do something like that without telling you! Just keep walking – in the opposite direction!

- Fight! If someone tries to grab you, fight, kick and shout out that the person is not your mom or dad.

- Communicate! Never change plans without telling your parents or someone else in the family.

- Break the rules! You don’t

have to act normally if you’re in danger; you can act out and start screaming or throwing things around to get attention. For example, if someone tries to grab you in a shop, you need to know it’s okay to knock things off the shelf if that what it’s going to take to get the attention of another adult.

“Parents and educators need to talk to children about personal safety and security at home all the time, not just once a year during Child Protection Week. Keeping children and our communities safe of criminals is everyone’s problem,” said Kotze.

Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance Geoffrey Makhubo tabled a the City of Johannesburg’s budget on Tuesday 24 May. During his address, Makhubo announced that property rates tariff increases would be increased by 5.9% which is within the South African Reserve Bank’s inflation target. Among some of the key aspects of the City’s revised Property Rates Policy includes rebates offered by the City which provide relief to

residents in excess of R1 billion. The budget exceeding the R40-billion mark is made up of R36,3 billion operational expenditure and R7,5 billion capital spend. In another unprecedented step, Clr Makhubo announced that Johannesburg had become the first municipality in the country to present a multi-year budget of about R30,1 billion to council for approval. The self-funding part of the budget will, also for the first time, grow from an average of about 39% to above 65%.MMC Makhubo said, “What is important to note is that we are able to achieve this despite the challenging global and regional economic environment. In the current financial year, our finances continued to strengthen, bolstered by sound financial strategies and forward thinking by the City.”Makhubo announced that instead of the

proposed 7.61% increase which is in line with the National Energy Regulator (NERSA), the average tariff for the City of Johannesburg is at 6.93%. He further stated, “This is a stepped tariff and the less electricity residents use, the less they pay.”

I trust this little article will put a smile on your face and joy in your heart as we remember the birthday anniversary of the great entertainer and comedian, Bob Hope who came into this world on 29 May 1903.Having appeared in over 70 films and authored 14 books, Hope was praised for his comedy timing, funny one-liners, rapid-fire delivery of jokes and his self-deprecating sense of humour. The song Thanks for the Memory is widely regarded as his signature tune. I had forgotten he had lived to the ripe old age of 100 and also didn’t realise it’s been over 13 years

since his death on 27 July 2003.I always enjoyed his jokes, his

shows and the seven famous Road movies he made with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. On his deathbed, they asked him where he wanted to be buried. His answer was, “Surprise me!”Here we pay tribute to a man who lived a long life with a career spanning nearly 80

years, who loved the game of golf and who made us laugh and

really did make a difference. For those of you too young to remember

him, ask your grandparents.

BOB HOPE – THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

They are the Internet sensations and have been dubbed as the One Direction of India, they are now making their way to South African shores. The heartthrobs of popular pop-rock boy band, SANAM will be performing in Johannesburg on the 28th of August 2016 at the Centre Court at Emperors Palace. The group made up by frontman, Sanam Puri, Samar Puri (lead guitar andvocals), Venky S (bass guitar and vocals) and Keshav Dhanraj (drums) rose tofame after composing their renditions of hit Bollywood songs and uploadingthem to their YouTube channel.Samar Puri says that they are really looking forward to their fi rst visit to South Africa and are planning a power-packed show. Their YouTube channel (with over 650 000 subscribers) features both originaland cover songs and has received millions of views. Their music video Duaaft Sanah Moidutty has over 12 million views

alone, yet they remain humbleabout their fame. Their fans have labelled themselves SANAMians.“YouTube was a blessing. We wanted to store some videos online so we couldshare them with our friends and the industry. We did not have enough moneyto hire a team to shoot our videos or edit them. We then decided to learn todo it on our own. So our focus was overcoming every obstaclethat came our way and our dream of making music and music videos for theworld to see. We never think about fame or where this would take us”, says Puri. The boy band describes its sound as contemporary pop rock and with theirdistinct blend of Omani roots and Indian musicians, their sound isrefreshingly different setting them apart from the rest in the Indian Indiemusic scene.Their original single Main Hoon was

featured in the India release of The Amazing Spiderman 2.Earlier known as SQS Supastars, the band changed their name to SANAM in2014. Samar, Venky and Sanam studied at the same school together, wherethey formed a band. Many years later Sanam and Samar moved toMumbai to pursue their musical dreams. They were introduced to Keshav and formed ‘The SQS Project’. In May 2010, Times Music launched a nationwide pop band hunt looking for young talent in India. Out of thousands of entries that auditioned, ‘The SQS Project’ won the hearts of the nation. “We don’t limit

ourselves to one style of music. We just want to keepputting out good music and keep our listeners happy”, added PuriSANAM is set to take fans, old and new, on an indelible musical journey.Tickets start from R200 are available through Computicket.

SPORTS NEWSSTAR SHINES HER TRUE COLOURSBedfordview learner Tatijana Ignjatov (10) has shone brightly as a dance champion since she was just six years old. But despite her success, she remains uncomplicated and down-to-earth, enjoying her school work at Bishop Bavin School in Bedfordview, and reading books and drumming when she is out of her dance regalia of tutus and tights.Countless trophies, cups and medals have been collected by Tatijana in her years on the stage, a testament to her talent and to the hours of discipline and hard work she has put into her passion. She dances four to five hours a day, six days a week and told the tame TIMES she prefers fruit to chocolates and sweets. She recently won in the National Eisteddfod’s Foundation Phase 2016 category. The competition started in March, when Tatijana competed against 1 345 other entries. These were then whittled down to 76 semi-finalists and eventually 20 finalists, on 21 May, the remaining 20 finalists contended for the crown. Tatijana was chosen as the winner.Tatijana trains in various dance disciplines, among them modern, jazz, ballet, show dance, horton, and acrobatics but has not let her success blind her to what is really important in life. She said her education was as important to her as dancing and that one day she would love to study Movement in Dance.Despite her beauty and success on stage,

she remains humble: “I was born to be real not perfect”, is her life’s motto.Still, it would seem her achievements are pretty close to perfect: Among these are a number 1 ranking in modern, jazz and show dance for IDO (International Dance Organisation) in South Africa, a number 2 ranking in ballet in 2015 for IDO in South Africa, first place at the World Dance Masters in Croatia, overall junior winner in the SA School Championships and winner of the Dance World Cup in Romania in 2015. She also featured in Strictly come dancing season 6 finals 2013. The list of her achievements goes on…Mom Nina explained her daughter was an extremely dedicated individual in everything she did. “She just does things with a passion, be that dance, drums or school work.” She said she believed her daughter’s heart was the secret behind her success. “At the level that Tatijana is competing in, every child is gifted and talented but not all show genuine emotion and passion during their performances like Tatijana. This shines through during her dancing and draws many into her performance. Seeing her love dancing and enjoying every minute on stage makes us happy as parents.”The National Eisteddfod Academy (NEA) is a registered non-profit company that kindles youth development through participation in the performing arts. Since 1997, close to 400 000 young people have been involved in the various activities of the NEA.
