Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,
I would like to take a moment to congratulate Monsignor Shelley. As some of you may or may not know, Msgr. Shelley is the historian of the Archdiocese of New York. Msgr. Shelley has written various Catholic Church history books. Some of his books include, “Slovaks on the Hudson: Most Holy Trinity Church, Yonkers, & the Slovak Catholics of the Archdiocese of New York,” ”, “Greenwich Village Catholics: St. Joseph's Church and the Evolution of an Urban Faith Community, 1829-2002,” and ”, “The Bicentennial History of the Archdiocese of New York - 1808 -2008.” His writings include his most recent book, “Fordham, A History of the Jesuit University of New York: 1841-2003.”
For the past year and a half, Msgr. Shelley has been writing the history of Ascension Church. Msgr. has finished the book. Over the summer he presented the book to Fordham Press and the book has been accepted for publication. Congratulations, Msgr. Shelley! There is, of course, a process to this so it’s still a bit early to know when then book will actually be published. Msgr. Shelley has given the names of 2 people to Fordham Press to read and review the book, get some feedback, then, hopefully, move forward.
Monsignor Shelley has masterfully painted a colorful description of the Upper West Side and Morningside Heights as these areas changed over the decades including struggles with crime, violence, and gentrification which has tended to push out long-time (and often poorer) families. With the arrival of each group of new residents, many of whom were immigrants, beginning with Germans who were then followed by Irish, Hispanic and now a highly diverse population, the parish adapted, sometimes not easily, to the needs of each. Msgr. Shelley gives particular attention to the impact the building of rapid transit, particularly the extension of the subway lines uptown, had on the neighborhood and how this shaped the parish as well. So There is so much in the book about the parish and the neighborhood that most would not know.
In the book, Msgr. Shelley speaks about the founding of Ascension Parish and how 5 priests served nearly 5000 every Sunday, and how Ascension parishioners felt encouraged and empowered by the Second Vatican Council, and how Ascension today is a vibrant Catholic community that welcomes all, and how Ascension does see diversity as truly being a rich gift.
I’ll keep you updated about the progress of the book, and I look forward to the book’s publication. Thank you again Msgr. Shelley!

Me gustaría tomar un momento para felicitar a Mons. Shelley. Como algunos de ustedes sabrán o quizás no, Mons. Shelley es el historiador de la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York. Mons. Shelley ha escrito varios libros de historia de la Iglesia Católica. Algunos de sus libros incluyen, Eslovacos en el Hudson: Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad, Yonkers y Los eslovacos católicos de la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York; Católicos de Greenwich Village: Iglesia de San José y la evolución de la comunidad urbana de fe, 1829-2002; La historia del bicentenario de la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York, 1808-2008. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)/Ritos de Iniciacion Cristiano para Adultos (RICA)
The RCIA at Ascension is a faith-sharing group accompanying adults in their preparation for the reception of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. This process includes interactive discussions about the different aspects of the Catholic faith. If you are consid-ering becoming a Catholic or are already baptized and would like to receive the sacraments of 1st Communion and/or Confirmation, the RCIA is the right place for you. RCIA meets every Tuesday night at 7 PM, in the Church rectory. RCIA also welcomes all Catholics who received the Sacraments, and seek to revive their faith and share their views of the Catholic Church.
