“Every year brings different trends. The quality of the blended red wines entered were especially noticeable, but there is still more opportunity for fortifieds and rosés”

How has the Sud de France Languedoc-Roussillon Top 100 competition influenced the quality and range of Languedoc-Roussillon wines in the UK?The Top 100 offers a badge of quality, and over the years has definitely been worth producers participating in, as they have gained valuable listings. Success is also shown by the ever wider sector of UK trade who have discovered more diverse Languedoc-Roussillon wines and are now stocking them. The awards offer a strong avenue to market for both established and new producers.

What changes have you seen in the past four years, in terms of the wines which are entered? We have seen more blends, especially reds. Wines which show off a sense of place are showing strongly: AOC Faugères, AOC Terrasses du Larzac, AOC Languedoc Pic Saint Loup, are just a few. Among the white wines, it’s now much more than Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, but also Grenache Gris and Vermentino. Winemakers are moving away from oak and achieving greater balance as a result.

What should the trade look for when selecting Languedoc-Roussillon wines for the year ahead? Above all, look for flavour and value for money, and some say an overall personality which reflects sunshine in a glass. Sud de France has a steady sunny climate and is a very reliable region to deliver all these qualities. It is much more than the just the "New World" of France. There is consistency in the winemaking, too. This is shown by the fact that the producers that have won the red and white of the year have won in the competition before. As for the 2015 vintage, it is very promising – and is good the world over – just like the 2010, 2009 and 1990.

What has influenced the development and success of Sud de France wines?Flying winemakers helped co-operatives clean up and develop positively. There has also been valuable influence from outsiders from the region – from Bordeaux and Paris. There was the realisation that they simply had to do better, and this is now being

achieved successfully. This becomes clear when you see how certain styles reflect the biggest potential to show off the region. Look at the red blends using Mourvèdre, Syrah, Grenache.

What do the judges look for when awarding Trophy status to a Top 100 wine? The panel looks for distinctive styles and, above all, quality. Personality that reflects the sense of place is also important. This year, trophies were more widely awarded across different styles. We were especially delighted to award a trophy to a vin doux naturel. AOC Banyuls and AOC Rivesaltes wines should also gain more attention one day. Within the panel, we have many returning judges, and this gives the trophies strong consistency. Additionally, we are delighted to welcome a strong line-up of new judges from diverse sectors of the trade.

Will British consumers keep buying the big brands and mass-priced wines, or what else is demanding fresh attention? The big names do well in the competition, and we always see successful entries from Gérard Bertrand, Laurent Miquel and Paul Mas. The region offers much more than value for money, as it is the diversity of wines which is always exciting. For reds within the £6.99 to £15.99 bracket, there are constant discoveries to be made. As for white wines, at around the £8 mark there is plenty for consumers to enjoy. As judges, we also enjoy seeing new names we’ve not heard of among the entries, and certainly there are some.

REWARDING THE OUTSTANDING AND THE EXCELLENT

the months ahead of tastings and commercial introductions to trade buyers, and then to the end consumer, the hard work has only just begun.

No wonder that the reputation of Sud de France Languedoc-Roussillon wines has soared. This year’s Top 100 is composed of a large selection of AOCs from Languedoc includling AOC Faugères, AOC Saint Chinian and AOC Languedoc Pic Saint Loup, as well as AOCs from Roussillon and the Gard, and finally a large selection of IGPs from the region.

Isabelle Kanaan, executive director for La Maison de La Région Languedoc-Roussillon- Midi-Pyrénées, adds: “The judging day is the springboard for a fresh 2016 campaign to promote the appeal of Languedoc-Roussillon wines, with their excellent consistency and quality at accessible prices. Our judging panel is stronger than ever. Writers and buyers representing every sector identify a new Top 100 of wines which are interesting in their diversity and serious in quality.”

For consumers, enjoying these wines is as much a part of a memorable holiday experience in the south of France, as ambling through the historic towns, taking in the stunning natural countryside and settling down for a convivial artisan meal.

Wine tourism has certainly helped to increase curiosity about these characterful wines, which offer impressive value for money, and above all are winning through for their quality.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region keeps delivering surprises. As one of the world’s largest winemaking regions, this dynamic region spans the Mediterranean from the Rhône valley up to the Spanish border and

encompasses almost all of the Pyrénées, as far as Carcassonne to the west and Toulouse to the north.

Different microclimates, in the hills and mountains, through to the sunny slopes that roll down to the sea, create extraordinarily diverse terroirs for over 30 thriving indigenous grape varieties.

You can recognise a great respect for the sense of place when you taste these wines. Skilled winemaking to bring out individual character has won the region its appeal. From easy-drinking wines to more standout styles, the best do not compromise on quality to create value for money.

For the Top 100, the thorough blind tasting, re-tasting and judging gives every wine entered an equal chance. While ensuring an even, fast and fair pace, the judges freely shared comments, insights and enthusiastic discussion.

There was plenty to ponder and praise about how the region is shaping up and the opportunities it offers to the trade.

The thrill at the end of the day in identifying the new Top 100 – with 17 top trophies this year – is a fine moment of achievement, but the journey onward for the winning wines has just begun. With

A panel of the UK’s leading writers, agents, trade buyers and sommeliers met in London in March to taste, judge and shortlist outstanding wines from the Languedoc-Roussillon – one of the world’s most dramatically diverse and progressive wine regions. Now in its fourth year, the Sud de France Languedoc-Roussillon Top 100 has become established as one of the year’s landmark wine competitions

THE 2016 WINNERSLWF P40

The Top 100 results and trophies are announced at the

London Wine Fair at Olympia, London, on May 3, 2016 at 3pm by Tim Atkin MW on the Sud de

France stand P40. All wines are on show for

tasting throughout the Fair, which runs from May 3-5. There

is information on how to source these wines, and there is a schedule of meetings between producers

and buyers.

684wines from 214 producers were rigorously blind-

tasted by six panels of judges. The

shortlisted wines were then tasted again by different judges. Entries soared by 18%

compared with 2015.

90of the Top 100 wines

are new wines.

67of the Top 100 wines

are AOPs.

20%of 2015 Top 100 wines gained UK

distribution across all channels.

THE COMPETITIONThe Sud de France Languedoc-Roussillon Top 100 is an annual competition organised by the Comité Interprofessionnel des Vins du Languedoc (CIVL) and Sud de France Développement to encourage producers of all sizes to show their best wines without restrictive criteria such as pricing bands. This has created a welcome environment for open-minded judging and attracts an impressive panel of judges.

The campaign actively promotes the distribution and availability of these Top 100 wines in the UK via on and off-trade outlets.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAYComments and recommendations are on the new website, where you can continue to follow the highlights of the competition year. Consumers can share in the excitement at Bastille Day-themed tastings in July in selected wine merchants. The wines will also be presented at tastings at gourmet events, including the Three Wine Men and Wine Gang shows in key cities.
