This course was designed and written by the following contributors: Kary Vannice

In 2008, after deciding she wanted to take her life in another direction, and live outside her native country, Kary became certified as an ESL teacher. Having no previous English teaching experience, she researched the process online, took a TEFL certificate course and found an assignment teaching English at a private school in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Over the three school years Kary taught there she taught primary and secondary students from beginners to advanced learners. Although Kary now works as a freelancer, she continues to teach private English lessons to adults and children whenever possible. Kary’s background is not in English or even education, but in nearly every job she ever had, she found herself in the position of disseminating information in one-way or another. In many of her jobs she created her own educational materials, programs and curriculums. She has worked for government

agencies, private business and even owned her own education camp for kids. Kary is living proof that you don’t have to be a PhD or have classroom experience to succeed at teaching English abroad. Winton Churchill

Mairéad Pratschke was born in Ireland and raised on the Irish-speaking west coast, as well as in Luxembourg and Germany, before immigrating to Canada as a teenager. Her passion for travel and other cultures grew with the revelation that language and culture are intertwined: She completed part of her undergraduate studies at the Univesity of Malaga, Spain and did her Master’s degree at the Catholic University of Leuven, in Belgium. Mairéad later taught for Berlitz, in Brussels, before returning to Canada in 1998, where she taught English to foreign post-graduate students at the University of Guelph and Global Awareness Through English (G.A.T.E.). After completing her doctorate in history, focusing on the role of language in identity, Mairéad taught at universities across Canada and in the U.S.

She has designed and taught courses in History, Film and European Studies, professional development courses in ICT (information and communications technology) for highschool teachers and education consultants. She currently works as a freelance writer and is always planning her next adventure. Dr. Bob Pesek

In 1975, he received a BA in Spanish from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In 1978, he completed the master's degree in TESOL from Indiana University and left shortly after, with his wife, Christine, for a position teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) at the University of Kerman in Iran. After finishing classes there, Bob returned to Ohio and taught English to international students at the University of Toledo and began doctoral studies in Higher Education. During this time, he also taught a TEFL methodology course for the University of Alabama in Bogota, Colombia. In 1986, with his Ph.D. in hand, Pesek was appointed director of the ESL program at Western Illinois University, traveling frequently to Japan, Korea, and throughout South America recruiting students for the program. In 1996, Pesek continued his international travel as Director of Operations for a private ESL teaching company based in Portland, Oregon. In 2000, he returned to the Midwest and took a position as ESL Program director at the University of

Northern Iowa. Pesek is currently retired and living in San Jose, Costa Rica, with his wife of 36 years.

INTRODUCTION  In  this  lesson,  you  are  going  to  continue  to  learn  about  the  different  job  options  you  have  teaching  English  abroad.  We  will  look  at  a  few  options  that  might  just  be  available  closer  to  home,  and  some  are  actually  “work  from  home”  opportunities!      If  you  have  the  desire,  you  can  start  getting  experience  teaching  even  before  you  buy  your  tickets,  sell  the  house  and  figure  out  just  how  to  get  your  two  dogs  and  one  cat  moved  to  another  country.    In  the  following  pages,  we  are  going  to  look  at  4  more  opportunities  for  teaching  English  abroad…

• Private  Companies  • Tutoring  • Internet  • Volunteer

If  you  felt  like  you  didn’t  find  the  right  fit  in  the  last  two  lessons,  maybe  now  you  will  discover  the  teaching  style  that  is  perfect  for  you.  These  are  ESL  teaching  options  that  are  more  nontraditional.

PRIVATE COMPANIES Private  businesses  will  sometimes  hire  native  English  speakers  to  teach  in-‐house  classes  to  their  professionals.      In  most  of  these  cases,  the  teacher  is  considered  an  employee  of  the  company  and  is  often  offered  all  of  the  benefits  of  a  full-‐time  employee;  such  as,  insurance,  paid  vacation  time  and  holidays.

Teaching  for  a  private  business  means  the  emphasis  will  be  strongly  on  Business  English.  Having  a  strong  background  or  education  in  business  is  extremely  helpful  in  getting  a  position  with  a  private  company.      What’ it Like? Teaching  at  a  private  company  you  may  actually  have  more  classroom  hours  than  teaching  in  a  school  or  at  an  institute.      You  may  be  teaching  intensive  classes,  where  you  will  take  the  students  though  the  beginning  steps  of  learning  the  language  through  becoming  proficient  enough  to  conduct  international  business  meetings.      It  could  also  mean,  you  are  simply  helping  professionals  that  are  already  fairly  competent  at  the  language  with  their  conversational  skills  or  specific  business  terminology.      Pay & Perks These  jobs  usually  pay  better  and  sometimes  come  with  housing  provided  by  the  company.      It  is  likely  that  you  will  find  yourself  living  in  a  rather  large  metropolitan  city  if  you  choose  to  work  for  a  private  company.      Some  Businesses  also  offer  housing  as  part  of  the  deal.

If you have a strong background in business and think you would like to help other professionals learn English in a more business like setting, you may also want to consider if you have these other skills as well…

Do you enjoy working independently? Working for a company as opposed to working at a school means you may be the only English teacher at your place of employment. Having other teachers around can be a great comfort and support, not to mention being wonderful sources for supplemental resources.

Without other teachers or a library of English teaching texts and workbooks, you may need to seek out your own teaching aids. Would you get pleasure from finding your own resources?

Are you a person who doesn’t mind repetition? Teaching in a private company, you might be teaching the same topics to several different “classes” in the same day or you may teach the same class every 3 to 6 months to a new crop of students.

 TUTORING

No  matter  where  you  go,  you’ll  find  people  who  want  private  English  lessons.      I  don’t  know  of  one  ESL  teacher  that  has  not  been  asked  to  teach  private  lessons  outside  of  their  regular  job.  And,  I  know  a  few  that  make  their  entire  living  off  of  private  lessons.    If  you  don’t  need  a  full  time  income,  enjoy  helping  people  and  want  to  create  your  own  schedule,  tutoring  is  an  excellent  option  for  you.    Private  lessons  can  also  be  a  great  way  to  make  some  extra  money  if  you  are  working  at  a  school  or  institute.

In  most  cases,  lessons  are  taught  in  your  home  or  at  the  home  of  the  student.  But,  you  can  always  arrange  to  meet  in  a  public  setting,  as  well.    Tutoring  usually  pays  more  than  regular  teaching,  but  you  will  have  to  do  your  own  “advertising”  and  find  your  own  students.

Teaching private lessons to individuals or small groups is a little like freelancing and there can be visa issues. If you decide to tutor you will need to

research the legality of it in your country and it will be up to you to obtain the correct working documents.

The following are some skills that are most important for a tutor. Do you feel you posses these qualities?

Do you enjoy being independent? Tutoring gives you the freedom to create your own schedule, set your own prices and decide where you will teach.

It takes a lot of initiative to teach private lessons. You will be finding your own students and

creating your own lessons as a tutor.

Are you organized? Keeping track of multiple students and what each is studying will require you to be orderly.

INTERNET The  internet  is  now  a  common  place  for  people  to  turn  to  learn  English.

Teachers  use  programs  like  Skype,  Tango  or  Google  Talk  that  stream  live  video  to  teach  their  students.             http://www.skype.com/

    Working for a Company

There  are  private  companies  that  employ  online  English  teachers  to  teach  one-‐on-‐one  or  to  small  groups.      Working  for  a  company  is  a  good  option  if  you  like  the  idea  of  tutoring,  but  want  to  earn  your  income  in  your  home  country.  This  way  you  can  avoid  having  to  obtain  a  working  visa  in  a  foreign  country.

Working Independently

Some  people  choose  to  set  up  their  own  website  and  sell  their  private  services  online.  This  allows  you  a  lot  more  freedom,  however  you  will  need  also  to  set  up  a  way  to  insure  payment  and  schedule  your  sessions.

You must have a quick and reliable internet connection

to conduct classes online.                                                                                                                           Teaching online may not be for everyone. You may want to consider the following questions before you consider teaching on line.

Are you comfortable with technology? Your computer and programs like Skype will be your bread and butter. Would you be comfortable using them everyday?

Do you have good verbal skills and use descriptive language? Using the internet can limit the resources you have available to teach. You will need to be able to express yourself and your ideas very clearly.

Are you a people person? Not being in the same room with someone can make it a challenge to build a rapport quickly. If you easily connect with other people the process will be easier.

VOLUNTEER  Volunteer  opportunities  exist  in  all  of  these  settings.  It  may  be  more  difficult  to  volunteer  to  help  someone  who  is  tutoring  or  giving  lessons  online,  but  with  a  creative  mind  anything  is  possible!    Most  volunteer  opportunities  are  going  to  be  found  in  primary  and  secondary  schools.  Both  public  and  private  schools  are  usually  happy  to  accept  volunteers  in  the  classroom.      You  may  have  to  provide  identification  and  sign  some  legal  paperwork  before  you  can  start  volunteering  at  a  school,  but  in  most  cases,  it  won’t  be  too  difficult  to  get  started.

There are many benefits to volunteering before you start teaching your own classes…

You can tryout a style of teaching before committing to a job.

You gain experience.

You will learn valuable teaching skills.

Build your resource base.

You get to help a needy school or organization.

You can get exposure to the local language.

You’re sure to make new friends!

Don’t wait until you move abroad. If you have some free time now, start volunteering

at a local school or ESL class in your area!

               CONCLUSION

Whew!  You  made  it  through  the  9  major  teaching  styles…    GREAT  JOB!    Of  course,  this  is  not  an  exhaustive  list  of  all  of  the  potential  jobs  available  to  you  as  a  new  ESL  teacher.    There  are  many  jobs  that  don’t  fit  into  these  categories,  but  we  hit  the  major  ones.    In  Step  #4  Finding  A  Job,  you  are  sure  to  discover  jobs  that  we  didn’t  cover  and  some  you  never  would  have  expected  to  find!

Step  #2  Part  3  Assignment    1)  Go  online  and  see  if  you  can  find  2  or  3  businesses  that  offer  English  teaching  over  the  internet.  Take  a  look  around  their  site  to  get  a  feel  for  what  this  style  of  teaching  is  like.  You  may  also  be  able  to  find  some  information  about  what  requirements  they  are  looking  for  in  new  teachers.      2)  Investigate  volunteer  opportunities  in  your  area:

o Find  out  if  there  is  a  local  ESL  class  taught  where  you  live.

o See  if  the  local  elementary,  middle  or  high  school

takes  volunteers.

o Look  into  volunteering  to  teach  Sunday  school  or

help  with  a  local  scout  troop.    Even  if  you  are  not  volunteering  to  teach  English,  you  will  learn  worthwhile  skills  that  will  one  day  help  you  in  your  ESL  career.      ***You  don’t  have  to  sign  up  to  do  any  volunteering  if  you  don’t  want  to,  but  these  will  be  valuable  resources  for  you  if  you  should  decide  to  volunteer  in  the  future  as  a  warm-‐up  to  your  new  TEFL  career!      Best Wishes for Turning Your English Skills into a Paycheck,

KaryVannice Kary Vannice

Coming up next… In most cases, the key to getting an ESL teaching job is certification. In the next lesson, we will start the discussion about different certification options. And, you will also hear expert advice on how you can teach without any experience or certification.
