Pentecost Sunday May 31, 2020 Pastor’s Corner Happy Birthday Church! The Holy Spirit, which descended on the disciples at Pentecost is sealed in each one of us at our Confirmation. Deep inside of us burns a flame, maybe just a pilot light, maybe a fire, but still a flame, a gift promised by Jesus. The Holy Spirit does not give us magical powers or compel us to act in certain ways against our will. The Spirit does give us gifts that we can accept and nurture as we strive to become more like Christ. 1. With the gift of wisdom, we come to place God in the center of our lives and recognize His supreme importance.

2. Through the gift of understanding, we are able to penetrate the truth of spiritual matters.

3. If you have ever felt the Spirit nudging you to act in a particular way, you have experienced the gift of knowledge. This gift helps us to choose the correct path.

4. Counsel can help us to make decisions that lead us to holiness.

5. The gift of fortitude gives us the resolve, courage, and strength to do what is right.

6. The gift of piety reminds us that we are children of God. God is Creator and loving Father. Piety helps us to revere Him in the light of this relationship and helps us to see other people as children of God and to treat them accordingly.

7. Fear of the Lord is a sense of awe and wonder of God. This gift helps us to deepen our relationship to God such that we want to avoid sin first and foremost because we love God and do not want to offend Him.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are great blessings. If you pay attention to the movements of your heart, where the Holy Spirit takes up His rest, you will find that the Holy Spirit is guiding you in a certain direction. That direction is always toward unity with God- when we try tounderstand others, when we try to unite rather than divide, when we show courage in not only proclaiming but living the Gospel, when we open our hearts in prayer, when we make wise choices, when we are faithful to our promises and commitments, when we appreciate the majesty of God’s presence- all powerful everyday gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Peace, Joy and Love, Fr. Brian J. Roby

Horn Community Center The Horn Community Center will re-open June 1st.Month to Month Memberships will resume on June 19th on regular scheduled days. Year members will have 74 days added to membership (This is the total number of days we were closed due to Covid-19) unless your membership expired during this time. In this case your membership will only have added the remaining days that were missed.

Sunday Connection The Season of Easter concludes with today’s celebration, the Feast of Pentecost. On Pentecost we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem; this event marks the beginning of the Church. The story of Pentecost is found in the Acts of the Apostles, today’s first reading. The account in today’s Gospel, John 20:19-23, also recounts howJesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples. Yet the event in John’s Gospel takes place on Easter Sunday. There is no need to try to reconcile these two accounts. It is enough that we know that after his death, Jesus fulfilled his promise to send to his disciples a helper, an advocate, who would enable them to be his witnesses throughout the world. We already heard today’s Gospel proclaimed on the Second Sunday of Easter this year (Lectionary Cycle A). That Gospel passage, however, also included the description of Jesus’ appearance to Thomas. In that context, we were led reflect on belief and unbelief. In the context of the Feast of Pentecost, John 20:19-23 reminds us about the integral connection between the gifts of peace and forgiveness and the action of the Holy Spirit. Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples to continue the work that he has begun, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” He breathes the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and sends them to continue his work of reconciliation through the forgiveness of sins. Jesus’ act of breathing the Holy Spirit mirrors God’s act of breathing life into Adam at the time of Creation. In fact, both the Greek and Hebrew words for “spirit” can also be translated as “breath.” This Gospel reminds us that the Church is called to be a reconciling presence in the world. Thereconciling presence of Christ is celebrated in the Church’s sacramental life. In the Sacrament ofBaptism, we are cleansed of sin and become a new creation in Christ. In the Sacrament of Penance, the Church celebrates the mercy of God through the forgiving of sins. This reconciling presence is also to be a way of life for Christians. In situations of conflict, we are to be agents of peace and harmony among people.

Vacation Bible School (VBS) Dates: June 29-July 2

Since Kentucky’s borders are closed, the ROCKY RAILWAY will not be making it to St Mary of the Woods this summer. But don’t despair as we still plan on having VBS (as of now). It may be simpler and make us use our imaginations more, but we'll be together to celebrate our common faith. Even though it says Rocky Railway, you can still sign up for VBS at :vbspro.events/p/stmarywhitesville .

Volunteers can sign up through the same portal! We will need lots of volunteers to help make our VBS a success. If you would be willing to help, please sign up or contact [email protected].

Youth Ministry: Mentors Needed In this time of social distancing and isolation, it isbecoming even more important to be “present” to each other. While the landscape has changed, passionate volunteers are needed now, more than ever to mentor our youth!I am looking for adults (21+) who have a passion for working with young people, are willing to help mentor and guide the youth in our parish through from thecomfort of your home.

We have weekly zoom meetings and small group opportunities for both young men and woman. I would love to be able to meet with them on a more regular basis, I just need a few adults who are willing and able to join us!If you would be interested in mentoring our youth or know of someone who would be, please contact me at [email protected].

Young Adult Ministry While we are not able to meet physically, it is still important to find ways to make connection to oneanother. Each week, young adults from around the Owensboro area are meeting virtually to check-in with one another and pray for: each other, those who are sick, our world and it’s leaders, anything else that is on your heart!

Zoom Meeting information is posted each week with details on our social media. Follow us to stay in the loop and join our virtual community!

Pentecost Sunday May 31, 2020 St. Mary of the Woods & Trinity High School

School Happenings There is so much uncertainty in the world right now. I know that dealing with the pandemic has been difficult for many. We all must remember there is one certain thing in our lives and that is Christ. It is hard to turn on the news and have any idea what to believe. Honestly, depending on what channel you watch the information is so different. I am thankful everyday that we know Christ, and He is the way, the truth and the life. If we can all stop and remember that and make good common sense decisions with the best interest of everyone at heart, then we can come together as a people of Christ. I think if we remember that it is easy to love people that are like us and think like us, but Jesus challenged that as He lived His days on earth. He did not bash the sinners and people that did not think like him, He ate with them, spoke to them, and loved them. He challenged us to love all people and treat everyone with dignity and respect. As for school, we continue to work on plans for how school will look in the fall. What we can guarantee is that we will do our best to keep your child safe, cared for and loved while we educate them to the best of our ability. Prayers for all as we proceed!

BULLETIN BITES“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”A “disciple” is one who “follows.” And “apostle” is one who is “sent.” Before Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead hisdisciples followed him. When he appeared to his disciples in the upper room where they were hiding behind locked doors for fear of the Jews, he breathed the Spirit on them and “sent” them into the world to complete his mission and proclaim his message to all people. Fifty days after the Passover, on the Jewish Feast of Pentecost, the Spirit filled them with wisdom and courage. They left the upper room to proclaim Jesus to all the world by what they said and did. They stood among people both familiar and foreign, some friendly and others fierce foes. They understood the challenge and theconsequences. They took the risk of imitating Jesus and did not waiver in the face ofopposition and dangers. We have been sent by Jesus. Can we do less? Can we do more?
