LETTER FROM OUR PARISH ADMINISTRATOR

St. Valentine’s Day Having a romantic St. Valentine’s Day dinner this past week might have been a bit complicated for some parishioners. For the first time since 1945, St. Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday fell on the same day, and they will not overlap again until 2024. Ash Wednesday is a somber occasion that marks the beginning of the forty day period of Lent. It is an official day of fasting for Catholics so, while you could have skipped lunch and went out for that candlelight lobster dinner and be following the letter of the law, it was not necessarily in the spirit of the day! With the days of Lent ahead of us to reflect on this holy season, I thought to offer some thoughts on mar-ried love in these days after St. Valentine’s Day. Prudence and my lack of experience might suggest I say little about this. But I have observed enough of life to know that it’s not always easy to live with the same person your whole life long. We can begin to take each other for granted, say things we don’t really mean, take out our frustrations on each other…. In the first flush of youth it can be easy to say: “I take you for better, for worse…” but living out those words in the ordinary and everyday can sometimes be difficult indeed. Each and every marriage contains pleasure and pain, joy and sorrow, hurt and happiness. It has always been like that and always will be, because a marriage is made up of imperfect persons. Thankfully, most marriages are happy. Marriage and marriages have always been under some pressure. In our grandparents’ time they had to cope with hardship and perhaps hunger, with diseases and child deaths. Then too some marriages were unhappy and some failed. Nowadays marriages are under more and sharper pressures, with less surrounding support. For one thing couples tend to live further away from their homes, families and friends than they used to. In any venture, support is important. For most people the biggest project in life is their marriage and the building of a happy home and family. Family, friends and neighbors need to give encouragement and help. Gossip, meddling or criticism is no help. Sometimes a couple may need outside help from neutral and experienced helpers. That’s to be expected and nobody should be ashamed of it. A kindness God does for us, someone once said, is that He doesn’t tell us in advance what lies ahead for us in life. None of us gets a sneak preview of the script of life. Marriage, like every vocation, is that great journey into the unknown country we call the future. I once heard somebody speak on the virtue of cour-age. She described it as the ability to deal with life as we find it. On their wedding day a couple make promises about fidelity and loyalty, to face together from that day forward whatever life will bring. We wish all St. Mary’s married couples a long journey and we hope it doesn’t feel long. But may each one learn from every blind alley and find new meaning from every misdirection. If there are Calvaries to be climbed may they help each other and come closer together in the climb, and from the vantage point of that height may they see more clearly and love more dearly. And finally, may they have the gift of compassion – for each other first of all, and then for others. May their words be comfort and their hands healing and their home happiness, and their lives grace for each other and for their friends and for all they meet. Have a blessed week. Father Aidan O’ Boyle

FOR MY PERSONAL REFLECTION

What can I do this Lenten season for repentance,

to show that I am sorry?

What can I do to help deepen my relationship with God?

What can I do to overcome temptation?

“This is a beautiful expression at the core of our faith… Jesus embraced the drama of eve-ry human life, our triumphs and failures, our joys and sorrows. In the Stations of the Cross, we remember how the Lord is with us, espe-cially when we seem to be stuck and have lost the way forward. He walks with us, and trips with us when we stumble and helps us to our feet again.”

What should I do for Lent? For many who must juggle life’s daily demands, Lent often seems to pass by with little oppor-tunity for spiritual growth. St. Mary of the Woods parish web-site, Facebook page and Parish App will provide a reflection for each day of Lent and Easter from Pope Francis: The Joy of Lent. These reflections are short and clear enough for the busy person, yet provocative, and challenging to the spirit. These reflections will not take long – only enough time to let the written words sink in and inspire your own thoughts. How you apply them in your life is the process of conversion. This is the journey of Lent and Easter. These daily reflections will be a treasured Lenten companion for every person to reflect on their personal life situation and to deepen their relationship with God. www.smow.org Facebook: http://bit.ly/2gm8Shq Parish App - http://www.parishsolutionsco.com/smow.html

SMOW Celebrates Catholic Schools Week! National Catholic Schools Week took place January 28th-February 3rd. St. Mary of the Woods School took part in this annual celebration of Catholic education and what makes our school special. The theme for this year was: Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. That certainly encompasses the core outcomes and values at SMOW! In addition to our open house on Sunday, other happenings during the week included: • service projects with our buddies - students worked with their buddies to create cards to send to children

in the hospital and our troops • a concert with SMOW's band members led by Mr. Dybis • a prayer service & mass • a school-wide STEM project - students built contraptions for an all-school egg drop! • an 8th Grade vs. faculty volleyball game • fun themed dress-down days We had a blast celebrating what makes St. Mary of the Woods School a wonderful place to be!

Confirmation What a wonderful Confirmation last Saturday! Bishop Manz took time with each one of the candidates to ask them questions and talk to them as they were anointed. Many thanks to our wonderful catechists who prepared the students so well...Mrs. Pierce, Mrs. Martin, Fr. Headley, and Deacon Chuck! And special thanks to the 7th grade parents who helped with the reception. May the grace of the Holy Spirit continue to guide these teens as they continue their lives of faith. Amanda Thompson

PARISH DIRECTORY & TRANSFORMATION

SECOND WEEK IN LENT Continuing with our review of the Ten Commandments, the second commandment reminds us of the power and beauty of the spoken and written word. 2nd Commandment: Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.” (Exodus 20: 7) The obvious lesson to be noted here is to keep your language in check. We communicate through a beautiful language; there are so many insightful, descriptive, and precise words to de-scribe our feelings. Blurting out curses should re-ally be a bit beneath your dignity. Today’s life of TV chit-chat shows and unending text messages have introduced us to anew form of “shorthand.” How often do we hear TMI! (too much information!) or OMG (Oh my God.) One wonders how the description of a football play or a chic leather handbag could be enhanced with an OMG. We know that the phrase is used with little or no malice intended – it’s really just sloppy language. Tip for this week – try to make it through the next seven days without a single OMG unless it is the lead-in to your morning pray-ers or an act of contrition. Just one week. Can you do it? Try taking the name of the Lord in praise: Lord, grant us simplicity of faith and a generosity of service that gives without counting cost. A life overflowing with grace poured out from the One who gave everything, that we might show the power of love to a broken world and share the truth from a living Word. Lord, grant us simplicity of faith and a yearning to share it. Amen.

BEYOND OUR PARISH

The men of the Knights of Columbus are just ordinary men who, try to accomplish extraordinary things. • Did you know the Knights of Columbus raised and do-

nated more than $170 million last year for charity? • Did you know the Knights of Columbus has a Culture

of Life Fund which placed more than 700 ultrasound machines in pregnancy centers?

• Did you know the Knights of Columbus has donated more than $65 million for seminarians through our Support Vocations Program?

• Did you know the Knights of Columbus funded the cost of more than 55,000 wheel chairs, donated more than 300,000 winter coats to needy children, and helps pay for the cost of televising Christmas Mass from the Vatican?

• Did you know the Knights of Columbus has raised more than $10 million to support Christians in the Mid-dle East?

We invite men of St. Mary of the Woods to learn more about the Fr. Ryan council. We will have an information night on Monday, February 26th at 7:00 P.M. in the Re-source Room. To learn more about the Knights, please visit: www.kofc.org. Contact Jim Keefe at 773-343-1003 or at [email protected] with your questions.

LOOKING FOR MEATLESS MEALS TO PREPARE THIS LENT?

Fasting from meat on Fridays during Lent helps us “acquire a mastery over our instincts and free-dom of heart.” (CCC 2043). Fasting is meant to free us. It helps us feel our physical hunger, and in turn, our spiritual hunger for the infinite love found only in God.

Gather your community, your friends or your fami-ly for a simple, meatless meal, an opportunity to eat while living in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world

When you’ve cleaned your plate, remember to put the money you saved by not buying meat – an average of $3 per person per meal – into your CRS Rice Bowl to feed our brothers and sisters in need around the world.
