A LETTER FROM OUR PARISH ADMINISTRATOR

Saints show the Way

The clocks go back this weekend, the darkness is closing in around us and soon it will make the nights very long. We are inclined to look on November with a touch of des-pair: fallen leaves, rain and cold, with little else ahead but the dismal winter. The Church has traditionally associated the end of the year with the end of life, and so November is the month of prayerful remembering of the dead. Traditionally the dark days of November are the somber backdrop to our thoughts about those who have gone before us and about the inexorable passing of time that points to our own deaths. During November we reflect on these things. The Feast of All Saints, November 1st, is meant to be a ray of sunshine at the beginning of these dark days. When I think of “Saints” I think not only of those women and men who have been formally canonized by the Church, but also different people known intimately to each one of us whose lives reflected the good-ness of God. Saints are not perfect people. They had their faults, idiosyncrasies, and weaknesses. They had their own struggles and difficulties. Even some of the canonized ones are known to have been difficult to live with because of some of their unique mannerisms. Yet the saints were people of integrity. They had a central focus at the core of their lives: the love of God. They believed in the goodness and love of God. They knew that the life they had, whatever unfolded for them, was blessed by God and they consistently chose to live life out of that central belief, no matter how ordinary or extraordinary their lives were. All Saints Day this November brings to mind not just martyrs or people we might tend to put on spiritual pedestals, but also those people who in life drew us to God because of who they were and how they lived. These were the saints each of us has personally known. Saints with names like Jim and Joe, Mary and Anne. These saints were grannies and grandads, sons and daughters, husbands and wives, good friends and best friends. The saints you and I have known were people with open doors and welcoming smiles. They had encouraging words and warm welcome-home hugs. They made coffee and bought gifts. They said quiet prayers and did their best to give good example. Some had long lives lived. Some had lives yet to be lived. They were good neighbors, caring teachers, loving parents, and kind grandparents. They made God present for us. They made the Gospel message real. In November we remember and acknowledge those holy women and men who helped us find our own potential for goodness. During this month of prayerful remembering take time out to look at your own life in the context of the passing of time. After the activity of the year and before the hustle and bustle of Christmas and the Holidays, we see November as a special month for remembering our dead. So take some opportunity, these November days, to ponder over the passing of time and on the lives and deaths of those we love. Take a quiet time and space to reflect on what it all means for those we love and ultimately, for ourselves. At the 4:30 pm Mass on Saturday, November 18th, we will remember in prayer Monsignor Leo Mahon, former Pastor of St. Mary of the Woods, and formally bless the Plaque bearing his image, which was hung recently in the church narthex alongside the Plaques of the pastors who came before him. Members of Msgr. Mahon's extended family will be present for the Mass and Blessing. Please plan on attending! Have a blessed week.

ATTENTION SMOW SENIORS!

The next meeting of the SMOW Seniors will be on Wednesday, November 8th, at 9:30 am in the Parish Hall. Please remember that parking is permitted in the Parking Lot IN FRONT OF CHURCH ONLY! Since we need to vacate both the Parish Hall and the parking lot no later than 11:15 am, the meeting will begin promptly at 9:30 am.. After a very brief business meeting and a special Veterans Day remembrance, there will be an interesting and informative presentation by Gail Petersdorff, an “Ambassador” with ROAD SCHOLAR (formerly known as Elderhostel), about the very many travel possibilities which that organization offers for seniors who desire to “see the world” and learn all about its rich physical and cultural offerings. As usual, delicious refreshments will be served. As stated in last weekend’s bulletin, this meeting will be the only opportunity for you to make your reservations for the annual DEANERY CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON, scheduled for THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7th, at WHITE EAGLE on Milwaukee Avenue in Niles. The price is $30.00 for members, and $35.00 for non-members and guests, payable by either cash or check. If you pay by check, please make it payable to St. Mary of the Woods, and write “Senior Christmas Luncheon” in the memo section (lower left-hand corner of the check). Since the Deanery’s dead-line for reservations is November 10th, this will be your only opportunity to make your reservations for this festive and joyful Holiday event! We look forward to seeing everyone at this meeting!

Homebound/Communion

Visitations:

St. Mary of the Woods Church has several ministers of care who can regularly take communion to those in need. Please call the parish office to arrange for communion for yourself or a homebound loved one. If you or a member of your family are currently sick and/or homebound and unable to come to Sunday Mass and would like to receive the Sacraments for the sick in your home, please contact Father Aidan O’Boyle at the rectory at (773) 763-0206.

Traveling this fall season? Why not bring in those small soaps, shampoos etc. supplied by your hotel to St. Mary of the Woods to benefit those in need. We can get these items to soup kitchens, food pantries, or specialized housing. We’ll have a basket under the table in the Narthex to gather these items. Let’s remember those less fortunate as we travel this year. Your donation will benefit a local soup kitchen.

Thank you. Marcy Mahoney

MESSAGE FROM THE POPE

RESPECT LIFE

Each month our calendar from the Catholic Extension Society includes a quote from Pope Francis, taken from a presentation by the Pope at an international location. For November, the comment comes from the 2015 visit by the Pope at Madison Square Garden in New York City when he met with the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization. “The common home of all men and women must con-tinue to rise on the foundations of a right understand-ing of universal fraternity and respect for the sacred-ness of every human life, of every man and every woman, the poor, the elderly, children, the infirm.”

The focus of these monthly comments is consistent – they address the application of the basic virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity. In September and June he reminded us that God will never abandon us; in July his message stressed the globalization of hope; for-giveness and friendship are topics in February and March.

With Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, we are already anticipating the hustle and bustle of the holi-day season. How meaningful that Pope Francis reminds us to respect life and extend our giving not just to children, but also to the poor, elderly, and infirm.

Heavenly Father, the beauty and dignity of human life was the crowning of your creation. You further ennobled that life when your Son became one with us in His incarnation. Help us to realize the sacredness of human life and to respect it from the moment of conception until the last moment at death. Give us courage to speak with truth and love and with con-viction in defense of life. Help us to extend the gentle hand of mercy and forgiveness to those who do not reverence Your gift of life. To all, grant pardon for the times we have failed to be grateful for Your precious gift of life or to respect it in others. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Aidan O’Boyle Dear Father O’Boyle, We want to thank you for allowing our representatives to display olive-wood carvings at your parish on September 23rd and 24th. On behalf of the Palestinian Christian families in the Bethlehem area, my family, and my staff, we wish to express our sincere appreciation for your trust. Thanks to the support of your parishioners, our total sales were $4,018.72. We are grateful for your understanding, interest and most especially for your kind hospitality during our visit with you. Having at least two years off between visits is o a great importance so that the parishioners would have enough time to get ready for our next visit. Father, thank you so much for your time, consideration, and generous hospitality. May the Lord Jesus bless you and give you the strength and wisdom to continue being a great shepherd for his people and his Church. May God bless you all. Faithfully yours in Christ,
