PAGE 2 ST. MAR K’ S MESSEN GER
Dear Friends,
Let me share a humorous story that has had many lives and varia-
tions. This version is probably my favorite.
A Senior Pastor called in his Assistant Pastor. He told the Assistant Pastor, “Next Sunday at 10:30
AM, Halley’s Comet will appear over our church. This is an event which only occurs once every sev-
enty-five years. Please contact the Sunday School Superintendent and have him assemble the Sun-
day School teachers and their classes on the parking lot and explain this phenomenon to them. If it
rains, cancel the day’s observations and have the classes meet in the Fellowship Hall and we will
show them a film about the comet and creation.”
So the Assistant Pastor contacted the Sunday School Superintendent and passed on the Senior Pas-
tor’s message. The Assistant Pastor told Superintendent: “By proclamation of the Senior Pastor of
our church, next Sunday at 10:30 AM, Halley’s Comet will appear over the parking lot. If it rains,
cancel the day’s classes and report to the Fellowship Hall with your teachers and students, where
you will be shown films, a phenomenal event which occurs once every seventy-five years.”
The Sunday School Superintendent then called his Sunday School Teachers and relayed the mes-
sage to them. They heard him say: “By order of the phenomenal Senior Pastor of our church, at
10:30 AM next Sunday, Halley’s Comet will appear in the Fellowship Hall. In case of rain over the
parking lot, the Senior Pastor will give another order – something which occurs once every seventy-
five years.”
The Sunday School Teacher then called their students. She told the children: “Next Sunday at
10:30 AM, the Senior Pastor of our church will appear in our Fellowship Hall with Halley’s Comet.
This is something which occurs every seventy-five years. If it rains, the Senior Pastor will cancel the
comet and order us all out to our phenomenal parking lot.”
The Sunday School children were asked to tell their parents. And the parents heard: “When it rains
next Sunday at 10:30 AM over the parking lot, the phenomenal seventy-five year old Senior Pastor
of our church will cancel all our classes and appear before the whole Sunday School in the Fellow-
ship Hall, accompanied by Bill Haley and the Comets.”
That is obviously an apocryphal story. Oops, sorry, big word ... It’s obvious it is a fictional story.
But it still makes a very valid point. There are times in life when no matter how careful we are, or
hard we try to prevent it, our communications are just plain going to get mixed-up.
I know there are times when people are going to hear something I didn’t say. Or they will not hear
what I was trying to say. And I honestly don’t know which one is more frustrating to me as I try to
communicate with others.
-
Those times often remind me of the old parlor game that most of us have played at one time or
another. You probable recall the ice-breaker where one person reads a story to the person next to
him. That person repeats the story to the next person, etc. By the time it has repeated itself
through 20 or so people, the last person is asked to say the story out loud. Then the beginning
person reads the story again. And quite often, the stories are miles apart. Certain words or
phrases have been dropped. Different words have been used. New phrases or words or even
people have been added to embellish the story. What once was a clear communication has now
become as clear as the muddy communications of the Sr. Pastor.
One of the important keys of living life to its fullest as Jesus promised us is to keep good commu-
nications going. And for a church, it is an absolutely vital key if the church is to have an effective
ministry to its members and the community.
While it can be a fun parlor game, it is a terrible way for us to communicate. At best, confused
communications will keep people from understanding what we are trying to do or say. At worst,
confused communications will drive a wedge between people and can even drive people away
from us.
Now ... if you happen to hear that I have suddenly turned seventy-five years old and will be ap-
pearing some Sunday in the Fellowship Hall accompanied by Bill Haley and the Comets, please
just smile and give me a call. Somehow the story has gotten a little confused. I’ll be happy to set
the “record” straight before we “Rock ‘round the clock tonight!”
Here’s to our always having better communications in our ministry together for Christ!
Marilyn & Barry Rogers
Shalom!

Adult Education
1. Faith and Discovery: is finishing up its study of the Reformation in Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years by Diarmaid MacCulloch. Coming up next, The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. Led by Mike Hamilton.
2. DONUTS: Christian, It’s Not What You Think Bible Study & DVD by Andy Stanley. What does is mean to be Christian? Curiously, the term is never used in Scripture. Instead, Christian was a label used by outsiders to define Jesus’ followers. Jesus referenced ‘disciple’ as the key word he used to describe his supporters along with the fact that they would be known for their love – a novel concept for their time – and ours today. Led by Marlin & Denise Williamson.
3. Lectionary Bible Study: What is a lectionary? A lectionary is a list of scripture readings assigned to be read on a particular day. This class will study and discuss the week’s readings used in our Sunday worship. Led by Tom Duncan.
4. Bible Studies for Life: Too Busy Not to Pray by Bill Hybels. Two truths haven't changed in twenty years: God is the same powerful, just, holy God he's always been; prayer that changes us and allows us to participate in God's work in the world can't happen on the fly. Led by Gwen Dornbos.
5. New! Adult Sunday School Class: Falling In Love With Jesus. Authors Dee Brestin and Kathy Troccoli introduce readers to the ultimate love relationship of all time: a relationship with Jesus Christ. Using humor, contemporary love songs, real-life stories, and solid Biblical teaching, Dee and Kathy help women discover a life-changing intimacy with Jesus. No matter your age or marital status, you are His bride, the object of His affection. The secret to an abundant life lies not in ten steps, but in devel-oping a deep love relationship with Jesus, aban-doning yourself to the greatest romance of your life! Led by Louise Brooks.

DIGITAL DAILY DEVOTION
Have you noticed that our website home page now has a daily devo-
tion? Go check it out today! www.stmarkshsv.org There's a small box
on the right side that says 'God Pause Daily Devotion'.
God Pause devotions are short, meaningful reflections on the coming
Sunday's lessons and gospel. Devotion writers are Luther Seminary
alumni/ae, and their reflections are a gift to you and to the church. By
Sunday, you'll be ready for an extra meaningful worship experience.
You can check out the daily devotion (and yes, it does change daily) by going to the St. Mark's web-
site each day, or you can click on the box and sign up for the daily devotions to be sent to your
email inbox each morning.
These new electronic daily devotions are supplementing the already available Word in Season daily
devotion booklets available in Communication Central. So whichever way works best for you, we
encourage you to consider a daily devotion today!
Dear friends at St. Mark’s,
My family and I would like to offer our most sincere thanks for your kind expressions of sympa-thy. A special thanks to Pastor Casiday for all his support and the beautiful eulogy. We are very fortunate to be a part of such a loving church.
Sincerely Yours,
Jean James

No More Clustered Sound-Cables on the Altar!
Some of you know, and some of you may have heard about the big summer project of
sound-cable- box re-location, which took place these past two months.
From the beginning there was the God’s hand, leading to the right direction the path of
the ideas about this project!
It all started just as a simple idea of a music ministry summer project to re-organize the
sound-cables around the Lectern, so that the cables would look better as they were.
But as soon as John Mahony came to lead the Audio/Visual Ministry, he came to the help
with a very ambitious idea of storing the cables, which would forever solve the dilemma
of cluster of cables on the floor around the Lectern.
From the start of the project, the initial idea snowballed so fast from John to Lynn Red-
ington and Norm Skrenes, and later, with Lynn’s, Tom White’s, Glenn Carter’s and Mark
McCain’s engineering brainstorming, it turned into a much more sophisticated audio-
project.
At the end, the result was spectacular, as you may have seen!
We give thanks to the Board of Worship for approving the idea presented by John
Mahony.
Also we give many thanks to John Mahony, Daryl Palm, Lynn Redington, Tom White,
Glenn Carter, Norm Skrenes, Dick Johnson, to the team of specialized technicians Mark
McCain, Robert Fleagle and Bruce Brodie, and to Emily Hallo, for the many things they
helped with, through over the period of 6 weeks, which this project took to be completed.
The result of this project will help very much with the work of all the praise team musi-
cians, of the Pastor and lay assistants, and of that of the Altar Guild members, who will
no longer have to walk over cables.
This entire experience turned to be such a wonderful time of social relations among
friends working together, and of spiritual growth among them, too.
In Christ,
Ferdinand Murati

We welcome Terry Szymczyk as the new Food Pantry Coordinator and Becky Hamilton as the new scheduler. We appreciate the roles that these two have taken over to promote a vital ministry of our church. Each month, we will focus on a specific item and ask that the congregation consider donating this item to the panty. Perhaps your music group or circle would think about taking on this challenge? This month, we ask that you bring Peanut Butter. There are donation bins in Communication Central to collect your donations. The church office is open daily to accept your donations as well. Remember, the smaller jars work better than a large quart container. The office will keep track of how many peanut butters are donated, and we will see if can “beat” that number next month with a different item!
