“Saved by Grace, we are called to Celebrate, Serve and Make Disciples for Christ”
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good”
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good” should be the rallying cry in our daily lives. The Stewardship Campaign is focusing on these words for 2017 and we ask each member of St. Marks to prayerfully consider how you can respond.
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good” expresses our faith in God and need to express that faith.
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good” provides us the unique opportunity on Consecration Sunday, November 20, to show our thanks for the gifts God has given us.
You will soon be receiving a packet in the mail asking you to consider how you can share the gifts God bestowed upon you. We need volunteers – your time – your sweat equity in “Celebrating, Serving and Making Disciples for Christ”. We also ask you to consider your normal giving which is not to be confused with the sacrificial giving associated with the debt reduction campaign “Freedom to Grow”.
Bottom Line: Actively serving God is faith made manifest, and Time, our greatest gift, we ask you to return to Him who bestowed it to us.
Psalm 136:1

Gr ac e and Peac e fr om Past o r
Thank you to everyone who participated in our 65th Anniversary Celebration Sunday! We were blessed with beautiful autumn weather, wonderful worship and music, good food and fellowship, gracious words from Bishop Julian Gordy and a great video program. One of the lasting impressions of the day for your Pastor is our congregation’s enduring legacy of faith, ministry, and leadership. It is important for us to CELEBRATE our past, SERVE in the present, and MAKE DISCIPLES for a future filled with hope. Even at 65, we know there is much work to do that God desires and will inspire in us!
November 6th will be a very special day for our church family. It will be Youth Sunday, and our Youth will provide worship leadership at both services. Pastor David Hart will be visiting that morning and providing a Mission Moment regarding Lutheranch. It is also All Saints Sunday, and we will give thanks to God “for all the saints who from their labors rest,” including these men and women who were members and/or had their memorial service at St. Mark’s: Liz Archard, Ellen Barnett, Margaret Boldt, Gene Copeland, Tony DiCerbo, Dale Johnson, Peter Keurs, Pastor Vernon Luckey, Ed Martin, Ernest Meinecke, Anna Offik, Kevin Skrenes, Anne Trunk, and Alwynna Vinson.
During worship on November 13, there will be a special litany and prayers in honor of Veterans and those currently serving in the military. November 20 will be Christ the King Sunday – the final Sunday of the church year as well as Consecration Sunday for our annual stewardship appeal for the church’s life and ministry. If you are in town for Thanksgiving Day, please gather with your church family for worship from 10 – 11 a.m. The following Sunday, November 27 is the beginning of Advent, and we will use the “Sing to the Lord a New Song” liturgy that I composed and introduced to you last year.
These are busy and blessed days, and I’m grateful for your prayers, support, and partnership in ministry! In Christ’s love,
Pastor Gary

Coordinated by Mike Hamilton. (basement choir room).

Pastor Gary and Ted Mueller will be working together to refresh and renew our initial endeavor with the Shepherd Groups. As we see the potential for this ministry and understand the needs within St. Mark’s, the Shepherd Groups will focus upon:
COMMUNICATION: Group leaders contact members as needed regarding new activities to inform and encourage participation. CARE: Group leaders call members once a month to check in regarding their life. Personal needs, with permission, would be shared with Pastor.
CONNECTION: Each group gathers once a quarter for fellowship. The event would help connect members of all ages and nurture a sense of belonging.
CONVERSATION: During our Leadership Retreat in August, we agreed that one of the steps that will help St. Mark’s discern its MOONSHOT will be small group, “holy conversations.”
Please anticipate updates regarding this endeavor which we hope to launch in the New Year. Some changes will be made in the composition of the groups as well.
Southeastern Synod Disaster Ministry Mission Trip – November 14-18, 2016 Numerous natural disasters have affected communities within the four states of our Southeastern
Synod. A new opportunity for adults to provide help will soon happen in Hattiesburg, MS, where
families are recovering from destructive floods.
This mission trip, introduced at the recent Leadership Convocation, needs persons with a variety of
skills: cooks, handy persons, general clean-up, carpentry skills, generous hearts. Persons from across
our Synod will travel to Hattiesburg on Monday, November 14 and do work for three consecutive days
before returning to their homes on Friday, November 19. For additional information regarding lodging
and expenses, please give Pastor Gary a call. The Coordinator for this trip is Deacon Ellen Koester,
and you may contact her at [email protected]. Information forms are available in Communication
Central.
For those of you interested in helping after Hurricane Matthew, information will soon be available
with more opportunities to serve and help our neighbors.
FYI – Earlier this fall, our Church Council sent love gifts of $250 to both of the ELCA congregations
in Baton Rouge, LA, to aid in their own relief and recovery work.

Dear Friends in Christ, Thanks to you, St. Mark's will be "Free to Grow" in our discipleship, outreach and faith. Our final commit-ment total for our 3-year Freedom to Grow capital campaign is $723,115.32. We are so pleased and blessed that your sacrificial commitments will allow us to eliminate our debt within three years.
Each and every one of your commitments is critical to the success our capital campaign. We encourage you to keep your commitment between you and God, so that he may allow us to continue to do great things within our church and community.
Even though we have provided our commitments, our capital campaign is far from over. We encourage open discussions among the congregation and sharing of our dreams about what St. Mark's can do in our ministries as our debt is eliminated. We can then move into the future with "perfect vision" of how the seeds we plant today will flourish in the future.
In Christ's Love,
Pastor Gary Jim Tevepaugh and the Freedom to Grow Campaign Team

Can you believe it!?! It’s time to decorate for Advent! We will meet at the church on Saturday morning and aim for being done by noon. Plenty of time to get home to watch the Iron Bowl. The more people who show up ……. The less work for each person! We ESPECIALLY ask some of our younger men to show up with their backs (and arms!) to lessen the risk of injury on our older men who have been doing this work for many years. Pizza lunch provided for those who wish to stay and fellowship!

Just like our homes, our church needs loving care. The spring and fall are good times to ready our home, and God’s home, for the coming sea-son. There will be jobs/tasks for all ages and skill levels. Some things to do will be cleaning windows, pressure washing sidewalks, trimming some trees and cleaning the grease trap in the kitchen. A pizza lunch will be provided.

Your Church Council Update…
Congregational Meeting — A congregational Meeting will be held December 4, 2016. The primary
purpose is to review and approve the 2017 budget. The agenda will also include other matters of
congregational interest, such as the status of on-going programs and the Freedom to Grow campaign.
If a member desires to present a topic to the congregation, please let me or any council member know
by the first Sunday in November (11-6-16). Depending on the topic, need for a decision and sense
of urgency, it may be more appropriate to refer the matter to a board or committee prior to introduc-
ing it to the congregation. Regardless, the council and I will work with you to ensure any matter is
handled both appropriately and efficiently.
Board of Property Management — This most important board is chaired by Jim French with the able
and dedicated assistance of just a few members who have interest and, in some cases, expertise in
some of the church maintenance issues. Collectively, they respond to emergencies, routine mainte-
nance, and repairs. Determining the best approach, whether to repair or buy, is a constant challenge.
For instance, the recent roof problem required the board to weigh the repair against the cost of re-
placement . With replacement, a warranty would mostly avoid any other repairs for several years.
However, it was not cost effective when other alternatives and applicable warranties were considered.
Because unplanned maintenance has become more frequent and expensive, the council will recom-
mend an increase in the Board of Property Management’s budget for 2017. Given past problems, the
age of some of our HVAC equipment, and the likelihood of additional major maintenance issues in
the future, we felt it necessary and appropriate to do so.
Stewardship — The 3.9% surplus projected for the end of the year was reduced to 1.3% based the
giving for September. While slightly disappointing, we recognize that historically, giving in Septem-
ber is not as great as in some other months. Regardless, we still have a positive outlook to meet our
budget by the end of the year. It’s been said before, but I wish to again thank those who have (or go-
ing to) commit to a thirteenth month of giving this year. This increased giving has made a noticeable
and positive difference.
President, Church Council
Now that my chemo and radiation are finished, I wanted to take time to thank everyone that has helped us get through the sometime difficult times. The cards, meals and most of all the prayers, have kept us going. Our church family has been so supportive, and we thank God that we are part of such a caring and giving church. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

BLESSING OF THE PETS
THANK YOU ONE AND ALL
On August 21, 2016 we had a memorial service for my mother, Anne Trunk. We want to thank everyone that attended the service, sent a card, or gave us food. The prayers for her and our family have been most appreciated. We will miss her, but we all have fond memories of fun and laughs that we can share. She had a wonderful sense of humor.
Once again, our church family gave us reason to rejoice, we belong to a very caring and loving family. Thank you for all the support we have been shown and may we soon return to being able to “pay it forward”.
Sincerely,
Barbara and Dennis Kocher, and all the family of Anne Trunk
