SUMMER SCHOOL IS COOL 4U Summer School is always a good opportunity for new learning, personal growth, and
continuing education! This summer Pastor Gary will be leading nine individual classes
during the Sundays in June and July. We will meet in fellowship hall from 9:50 – 10:35.
Dates and class summaries are listed below. There is something for everyone, and this
would be a great opportunity for:
Young adults home from college and young couples in the congregation.
Empty nest adults who would enjoy some class time with Pastor Gary.
Inviting friends and neighbors who may not have a current church home.

Huntsville Assistance Program
Open House
The Huntsville Assistance Program (HAP) will be holding an Open House to celebrate our 15th anniversary on Saturday, June 24. The open house will showcase our new facility, provide information on our array of services, and reward and encourage community support. The entire Huntsville community is encouraged to come by any time between 10AM and 4PM. Members of St. Mark’s are especially invited as we have been providing support to HAP for 14 of their 15 years.
Come by and see us, there will be live entertainment and food provided by local vendors. The new facility is at 1001 Monroe Street SW at the intersection of St. Clair Avenue, just west of the Public Library. Ample parking will be available in the First Baptist parking lot off St. Clair Avenue, with a shuttle bus provided.
We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Grace and Peace from Pastor Gary
June 4 – Pentecost: The Rest of the Story
June 11 – Making Disciples is Our Mission
June 18 – Start Spreading the News!
June 25 – Dead to Sin and Alive in Christ
Mary and I are truly thankful for the many cards and expressions of sympathy and
care we have received from our church family following my brother Fred’s passing on
the night of April 29. Looking back on the final week of his life, I recognize that Fred
had his “rally day” when the ventilator was removed; and he was able to communicate
that Tuesday with loved ones and express his deep feelings to those closest to him.
Much of Fred’s adult life had been devoted to music in many and various ways. He
loved to tell stories and make us laugh. Numerous health issues weakened him during
the past ten years, and it was clear to me that he would have been an “impatient
patient” had he survived. How thankful I am that I could anoint him and pray for him
in preparation for his final journey home! As for a memorial service, it may not occur
until the fall due to the travels of one son who works overseas for the State
Department.
We have had numerous inquiries regarding Mary’s health, and here are the details.
She has primary hyperparathyroidism which is causing hypercalcemia and a host of
symptoms which are compromising her quality of life. Tumors on the parathyroid
glands in her neck need to be removed, and the best place in the nation for this surgery
is the Norman Center within Tampa General Hospital. Steps are being taken for a
consultation soon with hopes for surgery sometime in June; added incentive for this
time frame is the family visits in Huntsville in July and August with our adult children
and their loved ones.
As each of us daily walks by faith and not by sight, may we always remember that the
steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end. They are new every
morning; great is your faithfulness. [Lamentations 3:22-23]
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Gary

Congratulations to our young adults who recently graduated from college: Claire Birkholz
[UAH], Michael Volz [Auburn], and Josh Yarbrough [Alabama].
We rejoice for these children who are received into our church family on the day of their
Baptism: Elliott Cameron Nafe, son of Joel & Savannah Nafe [Mother’s Day, May 14];
Luc Henri Provancha, son of Michael & Chrissie Provancha [Day of Pentecost, June 4];
and Kaiden Chadwick Bailey, son of Harley & Lauren Bailey [Father’s Day, June 18].
Our prayers for healing are lifted up for those who were recently hospitalized – Arlene
Deppensmith, Erica Lorine, and Ferdinand Murati – and those undergoing cancer
treatment – Derek Emmerson, Barb Kocher, and Christy Lunde.
Shepherd Group Care Callers, be sure to check in with people during the summer months
and plan a fun get together!

RETREAT – RETREAT – RETREAT!
What a treat it would be for St. Mark’s to
have a congregational retreat at Lutheranch
and stay in the brand-new retreat center!
The idea is to gather together as a church
family for fellowship and worship, learning
times and relaxation time. In my past experiences with congregational retreats, they become
special times for personal renewal and for building up the Body of Christ. With Lutheranch
less than three hours away from Huntsville, it makes a weekend retreat manageable and
possible for many people!
We have targeted the weekend of October 6-8 since it is the weekend when the fall breaks for
our local schools overlap. Travelers on Friday evening could car pool, ride on the church bus,
or go when it best suits their Friday night schedule. Activities would begin that night and
would conclude with Sunday worship and Sunday lunch.
Since Lutheranch is eager for congregations in our Synod to use this new retreat center, there
is an amazingly low introductory rate! The rooms have two queen sized beds with private
bathroom, and five meals will be served for us. The weekend rate will be:
$116 per adult 18 and older, $58 per youth 10-17 years old
$29 per child 4-9 years old and Free for children under 4
By the way, you can visit Lutheranch with the people of St. Mark’s
on Saturday, August 5 for the dedication of the retreat center.

Faith and Discovery: In Search of Paul , by
John Dominic Crossan & Jonathan Reed . Crossan, the eminent historical Jesus scholar, and Reed, an expert in biblical archaeology, reveal through archaeology and textual scholarship that Paul, like Jesus, focused on championing the Kingdom of God––a realm of justice and equality––against the worldly powers of Rome. The authors show Paul was a fallible, but dedicated successor to Jesus. During the first class, texts will be handed out and we’ll discuss the authors. Coordinated by Mike Hamilton. (Basement Choir Room)
Lectionary Bible Study: What is a
lectionary? A lectionary is a list of scripture readings assigned to be read on a particular day. This class will study and discuss the week’s readings used in Sunday worship. Led by Tom Duncan. (old narthex area)
Mid-week
Monday: Bible Study
A study on the Acts of the Apostles. 11 AM in the fellowship hall. Led by Pastor Gary.
Wednesday: 6:06 AM Devotions, Prayer & Fellowship, in the chapel
Wednesday: Agape From 6-7:30 pm, Luther & the Reformation (led by Tom Duncan - SS Room #8) will continue through the summer.
Thursday: Coffee, Tea & Thee:
Please join this welcoming group as they study the story of God through different DVD series. Led by Didi Kearney at 1 PM, in SS Room # 8.
A new Sunday School class for the summer begins on June 4…
Summer Sunday School with Pastor Gary SUMMER SCHOOL IS COOL 4U! Summer School is always a good opportunity for new learning, personal growth, and continuing education! This summer Pastor Gary will be leading nine individual classes during the Sundays in June and July. We will meet in fellowship hall from 9:50 – 10:35. Dates and class summaries for the first five classes are listed below. There is something for everyone, and this would be a great opportunity for:
Young adults home from college and young couples in the congregation. Empty nest adults who would enjoy some class time with Pastor Gary. Inviting friends and neighbors who may not have a current church home.
June 4: Spirit-Led Living. God has given the Holy Spirit to empower our lives as God’s children. We will discuss specific ways our lives can best be led by the Spirit. June 11: Courageous Faith in a Culture of Fear. We are surrounded by menacing messages that can make us fearful and faint-hearted. Learn how your faith in the Lord becomes a strong source of courage that overcomes fear. June 18: Text Messages from the Bible. Text messages among friends communicate much in a few words. Discover some powerful and amazing messages in the scriptures that could change your life. June 25: Constantly Connected. With Smartphones and Chromebooks we are constantly connected with family and friends, work and the world. Imagine if your life were equally connected through the gift of prayer. July 2: Speaking the Truth in Love. It’s true – the world judges, and sometimes we do, too. Through the words of Jesus and the teachings of Paul regarding life in Christ, we will explore “the more excellent way” of communicating with people.

News from the Church Council President…
Appreciation – I take this opportunity to express my gratitude and deep appreciation to this year’s Executive Committee, church staff, Committee chairpersons, committee members, and all other volunteers. Many positive programs and initiatives were accomplished this year due to the dedication and exceptional ‘can do’ attitude of everyone. I especially recognize Pastor Gary’s tremendous contributions to the Council and to the church. Without question, his inspirational leadership instilled confidence for the Council throughout the year. Thank you Pastor Gary. Thank you all.
New Church Council – Congratulations to the all the members of our new Church Council. They are:
President – Jim Birkholz Vice President – Derek Spadaro Secretary – Terry Ganoe Treasurer – Robert Kearney Chairperson, Board of Learning – Tom Duncan Chairperson, Board of Witness and Outreach – Steve Williams Chairperson, Board of Worship – Karen Syzmczyk
The following members are also to be congratulated: Columbarium Committee – Dick Johnson and Jed Deason Audit Committee – Diana Rhodes Endowment Committee – Karen Petersen
Nominating Committee – I extend my appreciation to the Nominating Committee. Members include: Karen Cunningham, Robert Burkhardt, Betty Hampton, Rob Caple, Lynn Redington, and Brianna Sieja. They worked seamlessly, under the pressure of time, in completing this vitally important task for St. Mark’s. As Chairperson, Karen Cunningham deserves special recognition. She demonstrated exceptional initiative, outstanding leadership and organization skills, and tremendous resilience in ensuring the nominees were identified and their individual acceptance confirmed before the May Congregational Meeting.
Congregational Meeting – Our Congregational Meeting was held on May 7, 2017. Several key focus areas are worthy of mention. Among them was the election of the new Church Council (noted above). In addition, there was a lively and candid discussion about the proposed changes to the Constitution and Bylaw. Ultimately, all recommended changes were approved. However, it was apparent to me that a few of the Constitution changes should be re-assessed for their applicability/impact to St. Mark’s. Therefore, it is suggested that the new Council consider establishing a committee to review the imposed Constitution and Bylaw changes and provide feedback to the Synod, as deemed appropriate.
Another topic of importance, and one of pride, was confirmation that there absolutely will be a Pastor Vernon Luckey room at Lutheranch. Thank you to everyone who provided prayers and made contributions for this most worthy distinction for Pastor Luckey.
