If you were able to attend to the congrega-tional breakfast on Saturday, February 1 st,
then you got to hear the results of the Strategic Planning Sur-vey. You also got to hear many ideas and dreams shared byWoodmont members as to what the future has in store for our
church. Among them, there was a strong acknowledgementthat we need to enhance the front entrance, lobby, and recep-tion area of our preschool. We are moving forward withthat. Some money has already been raised through last yearsAuction and this years Auction is happening this Friday atthe home of John and Joan Rich. Woodmont Christian Pre-school has been an integral outreach of our church for manyyears and it has been a key entry point for many families incoming to Woodmont. I believe it will continue to be an en-try point in the years to come. We want to do everything wecan to sustain its strong reputation and that includes makingsure that the facilities are updated and not neglected. TheStrategic Planning survey also showed some other challengeson our property. The most notable is the ongoing crunch forspace at South Hall, which is the white house we own on thesouth end of the property. The Nashville Food Project whichis housed in South Hall has grown substantially in recentyears with both staff and volunteers, working to feed thehomeless and working poor of our community. The growthand impact of this ministry under Tallus leadership is truly agreat success story. Our AA meeting that is held each Tues-day and Thursday night is one of the largest and most widelyknown in town. Many nights, we are told there can be well
over 100 people at the AA gathering. Lives are saved, changed, and put back together. Room In the Inn continuesto be a vital outreach ministry housing the homeless duringthe cold winter months. South Hall is doing exactly what wewant it to do serving as a hub for mission and outreach inour community, but the space is tight. In many ways, this is anice problem to have, but a problem nonetheless. At thebreakfast, there were other thoughts and concerns raised per-taining to parking challenges, the need to strengthen existingprograms, learning lessons from past building campaigns andnot getting back into significant debt, looking into the possi-bility of before and after care for our preschool to serve work-ing parents, serving as a non-profit incubator (as we havedone for TNFP) and a host of other things. Whats exciting isthat there is a lot happening at Woodmont right now and a lotof energy behind all of our ministries. There are so manyideas and possibilities as we look to the future. We want tokeep this spirit alive and continue to live our mission state-ment: Growing disciples of Christ by Seeking, God, SharingLove, and Serving Others. Our youth wing renovation is
well underway and should be completed by the later part ofMarch. This will be a tremendous improvement and a spacethat our youth can enjoy and be very proud of. ThomSchuyler, our staff member liaison for mission and outreach, has been working with a committee to address some of theimmediate challenges that we face at South Hall. There are
multiple ideas and solutions being offered. As we continueour strategic planning process, I hope we will remember whythe church exists and what it is called to do. I hope we willwork hard to maintain all of our ministries that have a pro-found impact on the lives of so many people inside and out-side of our walls. I hope that we will give thanks to God thatours is a busy, active, and vibrant church in an age wheremany churches struggle and cannot claim that as thecase. Most importantly, I hope we will not stop looking tothe future, building on our rich history, and prayerfully dis-cerning what God is calling us to be and do next. Simplymaintaining the status quo is not enough. We must continueto challenge ourselves to think and pray about what God iscalling us to do on this corner. Thank you for your prayersand input into this important process. It will be exciting tosee what the future holds! Let us remember the powerful andchallenging words of Jesus: Go and make Disciples. LoveGod and love your neighbor as yourself. Just as you do forthe least of these, you do for me. Deny self and follow me.
Blessings,

From the seventhgrade to twelfth growing up, myfavorite week of the summer was theweek at church camp or Conference. Andmy favorite part of church camp, at leastspiritually, was what we called "MorningWatch." I don't know if they still do it atBethany Hills or not, but we would get upand the first thing we did was to go outsomewhere on the Conference groundsand spend thirty minute alone with God.You might use the time reading Scripture,
praying, listening, or just watching natureand feeling part of God's world.Somehow it made you feel so peacefuland close to God and all's right with theworld.
Today such moments are called "ThinPlaces." In Celtic Spirituality they saythat heaven and earth are only three feetapart, but in the thin places that distanceis even smaller. A Thin Place is wherethe veil that separates heaven and earth islifted and one is able to receive a glimpseof the glory of God. As one person put it,"It's where I can touch the edge ofheaven."
"Thin places," the Celts call this spaceBoth seen and unseen,Where the door between this worldAnd the next is cracked open for a momentAnd the light is not all on the other side.God shaped space. Holy.
(Sharlande Sledge, "Thin Places")A Thin Place (or moment) is when
God breaks through our worldly living. A"holy worldliness" Dietrich Bonhoeffercalled it. It comes from developing aspiritual life which sees God in
everything and gives you a feeling of"oneness" with God and all creation. Some have called it "space for grace"meaning a daily discipline of quietness, meditation, prayer and solitude when youfeel God's presence (peace and joy) morethan ever.
"Thin Places" have traditionally beenidentified with sacred physical locationslike Jerusalem, Rome, or Mecca, oranywhere else our hearts are opened.Others find "thin places" through nature(mountain tops, beaches, wildernessareas), the arts (music, poetry, dance) orany other place or activity in which the
boundary between one's self and theworld momentarily disappear. I've oftenfelt such a "thin place" when I was skiingand standing all alone on a mountain
peak, looking out at the grandeur of God'screation. A way to find it regularly is tohave a daily "quiet time" with God.
Mother Teresa was once asked by areporter what she said to God when she
prayed. "Oh, I don't say anything," shereplied. "I just listen." "Ah," said thereporter, "and what does God say to youwhen you listen?" "Nothing," she said."He listens too." Thin Place.
John Killinger also writes recentlyabout evangelist Bill Graham and how hesays for years, when he was younger andwas traveling the world as a preacher, his
prayers were for his revival campaigns,
for the workers who prepared them, forthe people he believed needed to besaved, for himself and the singers andothers who were most responsible for thesuccess of his revivals. But when he
became old and infirm and no longer ableto go out on campaigns, and especially ashis wife was dying and he himself wasfeeling the debilitations of age, he spentmore time just being with God. He saidhe'd just sit on the front porch of hiscabin near Montreat, North Carolina, andexperience a completely different kind of
prayer - prayer in which he rested in Godand surrendered everything to God's will. There was no more anxiety to do well ormake a difference in the world. Now itwas time to turn everything over to Godto relax, to merely be there with God.(John Killinger, Outgrowing Church
p. 76-77)
How different our lives would be ifwe would learn to do this earlier in ourlives.

I love our Church! I
love Woodmont, and Ilove our denomination, the Christian Church (Disciples ofChrist). The approach to theology of theDisciples Church rings true in my heart.I love the Disciples emphasis onunderstanding that all people have agift of ministry to share. In doctrinallanguage, this is called the "priesthood ofall believers," meaning, of course, that weall are ministers in the world.
One of my favorite songs says it well:Some will be the teachers of life, some the
preachers of love, some the fathers, some
the mothers; Some will be the ones whowill care, some will listen and share, serving God as they serve each other.
Many gifts, One Spirit of Love.
This week, a dear friend of mine has beenin the hospital for heart surgery. Chrisand I were roommates in college, andlong standing band mates. Chris has
played guitar at The Bridge many times, and is a familiar face to Woodmont. Forme and Stephen, he is family, so this has
been a worrisome time. Chris stayedwith me and Stephen for several nights
before the surgery, and all of us have
been back and forth to the hospital andfelt the anxiety that can accompanymedical problems.
On the day of Chris' surgery, I spentthe day at the hospital. On hour six in thewaiting room, I was feeling antsy andfrustrated. I went for a walk in the hall, only to run into Ann Luther in her crisp, white lab coat. She was happy to see me;warm and welcoming, and wonderful tohelp me navigate the maze of thehospital. If you know Ann, you won't be

When I got home, there were a fewmessages on my phone from people Ihave the joy of worshiping and workingalongside at The Bridge each Sunday! I
had Facebook messages and notes of prayers, asking if things were going welland even an offer to meet a Woodmont
friend for dinner after a long day.For me, care like this is of the ways
we see the Priesthood of All Believersat work. Woodmont, your people haveministered to me! Sometimes churcheswrestle with the frustration of how therewill be 'ministry to the minister.' I cantell you first hand that ministry is alive
and joyous at Woodmont-- and it movesfreely between the congregation and theministerial staff. This week, and many
times since we have come to Woodmont, people in our congregation have given mecomfort. You have been the preachers oflove, the ones who care and share andserve God through both your actions andyour words. Thank you!

We give in response to Gods love. God first gave tous; love responds in return.
Giving is living, the angel said,Go feed the hungry sweet charitys bread.
And must I keep giving and giving againMy selfish and querulous answer ran?
Ah, no, said the angel, her eye pierced me through Just give til the Master stops giving to you.
