Hands down, without a doubt, one of the highlights of my workis leading Chapel at WoodmontChristian Preschool. Twice a week, right in the middle of the sanctuary,I get to sit down with young childrenand teach them about God. We sing.We laugh. We pray. We pass thepeace of Christ with high-fives andhugs. But most of all, we read storiesfrom the Bible.

A few weeks ago, I came to Chapel with a tall stack of books.Curious, the children and I looked at them together. Some wereheavy; others were light. Some had lots of pictures; others had lotsof words. Some were full of maps; others were full of music.

Then I pulled out one final book and said, Thisbook is unlikeany other. Its the most important book of all. Their interest waspiqued. This is the Bible. The Bible is a very special book thats allabout God and Gods love. Gods love for you. Gods love for me. Gods

love for the whole world! Their eyes got big. I hope that you read theBible at home, I continued. Maybe you can read it in the morning.Maybe you can read it at night. Maybe you can read it with your Momand Dad.

At this, a blond-headed girl raised her hand and waved it frantically. She was clearly upset. Mr. Justin, I dont have a Bible at home.

........My heart sank. Here was a precious child that, for all of herdolls and dresses and toys, had not one Bible at home. What atragedy! Its made all the worse by the fact that she isnt alone. Farfrom it. Today, it seems as likely for a young child to nothave a Bibleas it is to have a Bible.

........It was for this very reason that I secured a large supply ofchildrens Bibles for the church this past summer. Believe it or not,we had incredibly few age-appropriate Bibles before. Specifically,I purchased over one hundred copies of theJesus Storybook Bible.

.......TheJesus Storybook Bibleis by far the most popular childrensBible available. Written by an award-winning author of childrensbooks, Sally Lloyd-Jones, and illustrated by an award-winningillustrator, Jago, it can be found in churches and Christian homes

wherever the suns light shines. It is endorsed by pastors anchurches across denominations. It has charmed parents and childrefrom coast to coast. Its the only Bible that I deemed worthy to givto my precious niece. Its the Bible that I will one day read to myown children. Its the Bible that I currently read to yours.

.......What do I love most about it? Frankly, its hard to name aof the good things about it. Perhaps what I love most about it iits theological soundness. Make no mistake. Though perfectlappropriate for children, it actually contains some fairly sophisticatetheology. Clearly, beautifully, and delightfully, it shows that Christlife is foreshadowed all along the path to his birth. Indeed, everstory whispers his name. The Jesus Storybook Bibledescribes howGod moves heaven and earth to rescue his children from the dangethat threatens them. In its own words, it teaches children abouGods Never Stopping, Never Giving Up, Unbreaking, Always anForever Love........When that little blond-headed girl told me that she didnt hava Bible at home, my heart sank. But a short second later, it bounceback up. I knew exactly what to say. Well, then, Ill give you a Bible

You can have it! Keep it! Read it all you want! She smiled with relieWhenever she opens up her own copy of the Jesus Storybook Biblethese words from the Introduction will await:

The Bible isnt a book of rules or a book of heroes. TheBible is most of all a Story. Its an adventure story about ayoung Hero who comes from a far country to win back hislost treasure. Its a love story about a brave Prince who leaveshis palace, his throneeverythingto rescue the one heloves. Its like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has cometrue in real life! You see, the best thing about this Story isits true! There are lots of stories in the Bible, but all of the

stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how God loveshis children and comes to rescue them.

.......Doesnt that sound like good news? If youd like a copy of thJesus Storybook Biblefor your family, just do what that little blondheaded girl did: raise your hand and wave it frantically. Ill get onto you right away!

    Dear Woodmont,

This Summer I was jogging alongsidethe Snake River in Wyoming. I passed anaging cowboy, his worn boots proppedup on a split log, a smoking pipedangling from his chin, and a steamingcup of joe by his side. I thought I heard

him mumble something under hisbreath. But continued on my way.

Returning home, the octogenarian was in a hot and bothered rant.I stopped in my tracks. The curmudgeon stammered, Do you haveany idea what you just missed, not once, but twice?

    A bald eagle.

I looked up high into a trinity of Aspens and there she was, like asign from the heavens. This was no ordinary aviator. No offense to my starlings and bluejays. A bald eagle is in a league all of her own. She is our nationalbird for goodness sakes! Measuring three feet tall, a bald eagle is the

exact height of my three year old daughter. But most impressive isher wingspan of 7 feet. That is almost the length of my suburban! How did I miss it? Sadly, I wasnt looking for it. A tragic flaw!

How many times do we miss the miracle perched right there on thepath in front of us? These little ebenezers, divine signs, epiphanies, twinkling constellations in the night sky, some almost insignificant, and then others so gargantuan, leaving no doubt that the Spirit hasbroken through.

Are we so earthbound that we are blind to the mystery?

I believe God is still at work in the world. Actually, that God is work in each of our lives. Most of the time we are too stubborn see the signs.

    Paying attention is sacramental!

We get so caught up in our lives, running here and theaccomplishing, fretting, enduring, that we miss the eagle---

glimmer of beauty in the ugly, clarity in the chaos, a new path atdead end, a creative spark on an empty page, a flicker of light undthe dark shroud, and a voice of hope in the despairing wilderness

Never doubt the mysterious undercurrent humming, the luminothread weaving, the divine pulse beating beneath the surface of lifThe Spirit is at work. The hypothesis proven: We are part of a muclarger plan, of divine proportions. For the next three days, I ran the same route, determined to sthe eagle again. No luck.

Thats life. And yet, if we keep our eyes pealed, the definition faith, we are promised that God will show up in a trinity of Aspens

For those who are suffering in the trenches of Life, keep looking uThe eagle will make her way in your direction, that is the promise

    Live in Hope, Farrell

P.S. A big thank you to the spiritual cowboys in our lives who are nafraid to remind us to look up!
