What's Happening at Woodmont? by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

As we move into the New Year, there is a lot going on. Hereare some things worth noting…

THREE FOCUS AREAS for 2014 –  1) SMALL GROUPS – We continue to believe in the

importance of small groups as a means of education, spiritual growth, fellowship, connection, mission, and accountability. We are in the process of formingnew small groups, recruiting new leaders, and tryingto get our new members plugged in. Contact one ofthe ministers if you want to be in a small group or ifyou would like to start one.

2) STEWARDSHIP  involves time, talent, andtreasure. Financial support of the church is essential

but it also goes far beyond that. We are focusing onstewardship this year and encouraging all Woodmontmembers to identify and use their spiritual gifts forministry.

3)  STRATEGIC PLANNING – We are continuing toask the question, "What is God calling our church todo next?" A committee, chaired by Cyril Stewart, has been meeting for five months now focusing onthis question and has been actively seeking inputfrom the congregation. We continue to have spacechallenges, particularly at South Hall, with all theoutreach ministries taking place. There will be acongregational breakfast on Saturday, February 1st inDrowota Hall to share the survey results from the fall

and to give updates on the process.

"BACK TO THE BASICS" SERMON SERIES  –  continues on Sunday mornings through the month ofJanuary. We are looking at core beliefs, the church, discipleship, temptation, meaning, purpose, and other topicsand are using the Gospel of Matthew as our guide. DuringFebruary, we will be focusing on the Sermon on the Mountfound in Matthew 5-7.

DISCIPLESHIP CLASSES  – are being offered onWednesday nights beginning January 15th. These classesare based on the Woodmont mission statement: "Growing

Disciples of Christ by Seeking God, Sharing Love, andServing Others." The SEEKING CLASS will be onJanuary 15th, the SHARING CLASS on January 22nd , andthe SERVING CLASS on January 29th. These classes are agreat way to grow in your faith and spiritual life. Theseclasses are being held in the boardroom.

INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE  – is also beingoffered on Wednesday nights beginning January 15th  at

6:30 in Room #105 with Roy Stauffer. Come and get anoverview of the Bible and find out how to read and study it.

DIVORCE CARE  –  A new Divorce Care series will beginon January 15th  following the 5-Star Dinner in the BayRoom. Contact Anne Stauffer for more info.

THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE  – is currentlyaccepting nominations for church leadership. This year, wewill nominate one Chair Elect (Cyril Stewart will becomeChair), three at-large Board Members, Five Elders, andTwenty-five Deacons. Marcus Crider is chairing thiscommittee. Contact info for committee members is in The

Spire  on page 8. Please get your nominations in by theend of January, and keep this committee in your thoughtsand prayers in the weeks ahead. This group has a veryimportant job each year.

at 9:00 a.m. in Drowota Hall. Comehear the results of the strategic planning survey from thefall and get updates as to what is next. Please RSVP tothe church office. Elders, Deacons, Board Members, andCREW leaders are strongly encouraged to attend.

YOUTH WING RENOVATION IS UNDERWAY! Weare remodeling our youth wing to update and better utilizethe space. This should take about two months to completeand will be exciting when it is finished. Walk down andcheck out the progress. There will be an unveiling once thework is complete.

THE BRIDGE HAS A NEW TIME  – The Bridge hasnow moved to 5:15 on Sunday nights.

I hope your new year is off to a great start. As you can sethere are many opportunities for spiritual growth and to g

Upon the threshold of the year we stand,Holding Thy hand;

The year holds mysteries andvague surprise

To meet our eyes; What will its passing moments bring,

To weep, or sing?~Homera homer-Dixon

The poet expresses the way I feel at the beginning of every New Year. What liesahead? We have no way of knowing. But wedo know whatever lies ahead, we will do just fine and live life to the fullest if 1) wehave genuine faith in God, and 2) we knowhow to love one another.

Recently, Clay asked the staff to thinkabout several questions, the first of whichwas: "One thing I learned in 2013?" I didn'thave to think very long or hard about thatone. Having had heart surgery in 2013,and evidently coming closer to deaththan I realized, I learned (once again) how

precious life is and how there's no guaranteeabout tomorrow. So the wise person will"number his/her days to gain a heart ofwisdom." (Psalm 90:12)  And that wisdomteaches us to value whatever time we havein this world, whether a little or a lot.

One of the best suggestions as to how to better use our time is "Carpe Diem," whichmeans "seize the day." It means to live inthe present, each day at a time, and not getstuck in the past or caught up in the future.

"Look not mournfully into the past;It comes not back again.

Wisely improve the present. It is thine."

~Longfellow

As somebody once put it in terms themodern money-conscious world might best

understand: "Yesterday is a cancelled check.Tomorrow is a promissory note. Only todayis cash in hand." So we need to live fully inthe present, and live each day to the fullest, and just to figure out what that means is agreat challenge for us all.

"Forenoon and afternoon and night –And day is gone, -

So short a span of time there is"Twixt dawn and evensong.

Youth, - Middle life, - Old age, -And life is past –

So live each day that God shall say,"Well done" at last.

~Edward Rowland Sill

President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in oof his famous fireside chats, once sai"Never before have we had so little time do so much." Do we not feel that same wtoday? There is never enough time to do that we want to do. Therefore, we need learn how to use our time wisely, and spenit in the very best way.

"Dost thou love life?Then do not squander time;

For that's the stuff Life is made of."~Ben Franklin, "Poor Richard's Almanac

May you make the most of your life in2014!

~Roy

Carpe Diem by Dr. C. Roy Stauffer, Minister of Church Life

This week, I had the great

pleasure of leading musicand teaching writing at agathering at one of my

favorite retreat centers: Pilgrim Center onGreen Lake outside Madison, Wisconsin.

For the past fifteen years, during the secondweek of January, I have slung my guitarover my shoulder and headed to PilgrimCenter with a group of adults and teensfor a weekend away to sing, pray, write and be still. At dinner one night, it occurredto me that the first time I led this WinterGathering, these high school sophomoreswere rosy-cheeked little newborns!

Oh, how we grow!

As children, growth just happens-- and ithappens fast! Blink, and your babblingtoddler is reading chapter books. Next thingyou know, she's taking the SATs, and then, off into the wide world of being an adult.

As adults, though, we have to be moreintentional about continuing our growth process. Children's parents feed them

healthy food, read them books, and take

them to museums, piano lessons and soccer

practice. All of these choices encouragegrowth.

What do we do, though, as adults, toencourage our continued growth? Some ofus stagnate, without realizing it. We takethe "grown up" title too seriously, maybe. The words "grown up" themselves indicatea finality: Grown: Growth Cycle Complete.

Grown? Groan.

Will healthy food, reading, visitingmuseums, taking music lessons and playingsports help us to grow as adults, just like itdid when we were children? I'd say yes!

What else helps us grow? Developing our physical, emotional, social and spiritualskills is a healthy and ongoing process, ourwhole lives long. The choices we make inthe ways we interact with others deeplyinfluence the ways we grow.

I'm so thankful to serve a church filledwith people that actively pursue theirown continuing growth! There are many

opportunities that offer a chance to jump-

start your growing process: Wednesd

night and Sunday morning classes, BridCreative Teams, Restore classes, ChoiEnsembles and Handbells, Nashville FoProject, Room in the Inn and HabitTrekkers, Q Groups, and so much more!

Fill in the blank: What are you doing rig

now in your life that is helping you grow?Physical ___________________________Emotional _________________________Spiritual ___________________________Social ____________________________

If you're interested in growing yospiritual and emotional life through and creativity, or deepening relationshipI hope you'll drop me a note [email protected]. We can connand talk about opportunities for you The Bridge through Creative Teams andGroups.

I am hopeful that this year, all of us Woodmont will grow in our understandiof who we are, and that we'll grow closerGod and one another.
