place where we can go as we are and not bequestioned.”

Before I go farther,

an activity!

• 1. What does Home mean to you?

• 2. What defines Home to you?

• 3. Where is Home?

• 4. How do you feel home has influenced your life?

Definition of Terms

• University student housing accommodation: a multi-

occupancy housing unit operated by a university.

• Built environment: the products and processes of

human creation (material and non-material)

(McClure & Bartuska, 2007).

• Life Design: practices, preferences, and

expectations which influence life experience

(Azevedo, 2008; Reilly, 2011).

Conceptualising University Student

Housing Accommodations (USHA)

• Physical Space(s) & Generative Place

• University Spaces: teaching and learning

• From revenue generator, to incubator of

relationships, to revenue generator again

Framing Student Experience

in USHAs

• Personal development: Environmental Psychological

(Gifford, 2008), Social Learning Theory (Vygotsky,1978), Cultural

•  Academic and Non-Academic Knowledge(s)

• Student Learning Outcomes & Global Citizenship:

Self in Sustainability of local, national, global

Drawing on USHAs as university homes,

a proposed study

• What am I proposing to study?

• Why is this important, past-present-future?

• How has it been approached before?

• What is the opportunity to expand upon knowledge?

Research Questions

• How do students spend their time in a university

student housing accommodation?

• What personal practices do students engage in a

university student housing accommodation?

• What impact does the physical design of a universityhousing accommodation have on students‟

experience?

Emerging Project Design

• Ethnography and Phenomenology

• Short answer survey, semi-structured interviews

• 3 different university settings from 3 different time

periods and 3 separate university typologies

Built Environment &

Life Design

Physical

Non-Physical

Life Design in a university setting:

Students‟ Experience

• Student Experience in a university

• Emergent, self-regulated learning

• Connecting formal and informal learning

opportunities, Life Design as a personal practice

which incorporates a variety of self-regulating,

reflective, and reflexive practices

Current Climate for Assessment

of Student Experience• Preference towards performance based evaluation

and assessment of student experience (Savin-

Baden, 2008)

• Relationships and Outcomes

• Students‟ experience measured by explicit, identifiable factor analysis (e.g. National Student

Satisfaction Survey)

8/11/2019 Zachery Spire, IOE PhD Summer Conference Presentation, 2014

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/zachery-spire-ioe-phd-summer-conference-presentation-2014 17/21

Why is this important?

• Home as an enduring part of human narratives,

personal development, „safe space‟ or „unsafe

space‟ (Reilly, 2011)

• University as a transitional period, identities in

exploratorium

• Life design:a way of contextualising being andbecoming (Barnett, 2011)…the decision to entangle

and de-tangle oneself from the web of knowledge

and assumptions about knowing

Considering the Future

• Impact of university housing on housing in England

broadly…how can we create and allocate space

successfully?

• University student housing accommodations and the

local, regional, national and international demand for

FE/HE/Lifelong Learning courses

• Designing residence models to be complementary to

the activities and principles of a university and the

Life Design principles of students in residences

Bringing it Home•  A great deal of interest and generalist research has been

offered on university student housing accommodations, but

I‟d like to contribute my part…personal stories

• Home is an important part of my life, and I believe, an

important part of the way we live, how we are able to think,

be…and become (Barnett, 2011).

•  Abundant opportunity to engage with students about theirexperience in student housing accommodations exists.

• Growing student participation, engaging with diversity in HE

and the “Place of space-place” in student Living-learning

― Rainer Maria Rilke

“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your

heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now

written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek

the answers, which cannot be given you

because you would not be able to live them. Andthe point is, to live everything. Live the questions

now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without

noticing it, live along some distant day into the

answer.”
