HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER
CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from fi rst through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofi t Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Jasper is a Boxer/Hound mix about 3 years old who weighs 40 pounds. He is a fun loving high energy dog! Jasper loves to run around and play with other dogs, go for car rides, and meet new people. Because of his
high energy it is best he is with older children. Jasper would do well with another dog and a fenced-in backyard. He would make a great addition to an active family. Jasper is neutered, up to date on his shots, and micro-
chipped. For more information, please contact us at 518-424-2878
Suzy is an 8-year old spayed female Poodle who is up to date on her shots and microchipped. She would do best in a calm, quiet home with no children. Suzy is housebroken and good with dogs. She is eligible for our Senior to

Marvin
Crowley is an absolutely gorgeous green eyed 1-year-old boy that was res-cued as a kitten from a woodpile and a life of fending for himself outdoors. Crowley is very affectionate and loves attention but has not been adopted
yet because he is a “scaredy-cat” ...waiting for a family patient enough to give him the time he needs to trust. He is great with his foster family and with many others that have taken the time to get to know him. Once
Crowley gets to know you he’s a really amazing guy that will be so grateful to have a forever home. Crowley is great with other cats and dogs. Are you willing to give this regal boy a chance? Crowley is neutered, up to date on
his shots and negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia.
Marvin is an extremely laid back and easy going 5-year-young gentleman. Marvin loves to be involved in everything going on in the house and will fol-low his foster dad around to keep an eye on things. Marvin can be a bit inde-pendent but does come seeking attention when he needs a little love. Marvin likes to sleep in his special spot at the foot of the bed each night - not on top of you but not too far away either. If you decide to adopt this awesome guy please remember he will need time to get used to his new surroundings. Marvin currently lives with other cats and dogs where he gets along just
fine but he’d probably do best with only a few other four-legged companions. Oh and did we mention how incredibly soft his fur is — kitty silk! Marvin is neutered, up to date on his shots and negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia.

While I was raking-up the leaves in my yard, I noticed some areas of the lawn that are a
bit thin. While it is too late to get grass seed to sprout, there’s a trick I’ll use to make sure
these patches come up thick and lush next spring. It’s called “dormant seeding”. What
I’ll do is wait until it’s cold enough so that there’s no possibility that grass seed can sprout
and then overseed my thin areas with grass seed. I know it sounds crazy but the idea is
that the grass seed will lay out there all winter and sprout with the first warm weather in
spring. You might think that all that freezing weather would ruin the grass seed. Look at it
this way: grass seed produced naturally (if you didn’t mow your lawn) would fall from the
mother grass plant at the end of the growing season and lie dormant on the soil until spring.
When temperatures are warm enough, the seeds sprout. Since we mow our lawns (hopefully)
long before they have a chance to produce seeds we’ll have to purchase grass seed to spread
on the thin lawn. Freezing won’t hurt grass seed. Over winter, rain and snow will press
the seed into firm contact with the soil and soak the seeds so they’re “primed and ready”
when warm spring days return. It’s a neat trick and can save you the time and hassle of
dragging hoses around in spring trying to keep grass seed damp. I know of some “old timers”
who religiously over-seed their lawns right before the snow flies. It’s a neat trick...try it.
Even as they say farewell to the waning season, real gardeners are working away on
projects to make next year’s growing season even better than the one just passing. There
are bulbs to plant, perennials to divide and shrubs that might need to be relocated. As the
season winds down, time can often be found to build new beds for planting next spring.
This is the time of year I like to look for bargains as the garden centers discount shrubs and
perennials to move them out before winter. Often the plants I get during these fall sales don’t
look like much with the leaves falling off as they go into dormancy but, as long as the roots
and stems are in good shape, I’m willing to take a chance. Sometimes the bargains are so
good that I buy plants that I have no plan for but the price is so good that I can’t pass them
up. These plants will often have to spend the winter in their pots while I come up with a
plan for them. I’m not afraid to winter-over perennials in pots or balled-in-burlap shrubs
or trees. It’s all a question of knowing how to bring them through the harsh winter ahead.
First, scout out a sheltered location. We know that our prevailing wind comes from
the west and north. The east facing wall of a garage, shed or even the house is a great
spot. The building will block the cold, dry air that can dehydrate our wintering plants.
I’ve got a 4’ high retaining wall on the west side of my vegetable garden that works well
for this purpose. Parallel to the wall, I’ll dig a trench deep enough to set my potted and
balled bargains into. If I happen to have a tree that is so tall that it sticks above the wall,
I’ll tip it on its side so the branches are below the top of the wall, protected from the wind.
Then, I’ll fill around the pots and balls with loose soil and tamp it in. Until winter sends
my treasures into complete dormancy, I’ll keep an eye out that they don’t dry out but, with
rain such a regular feature this time of year, that’s not of much concern. As early as I
can in spring, I’ll find places in my landscape for my fall bargains and plant them (adding
bone meal, of course). So now, even though I take advantage of the fall planting season
as much as I can, I know I can keep any leftovers safe through winter even if I run short of
time this fall. Thanks for the read and have a spooky but safe Halloween.

CALLING ALL MENTORS!CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c) 3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guid-ance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently look-ing for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Imme-diate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your commu-nity, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 x102, or email [email protected].

STARS FOR OUR TROOPSCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots orga-nization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American fl ag that has fl own over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fl y. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsFo-rOurTroops.org or contacting [email protected].
