Saratoga Film ForumSARATOGA SPRINGS - To Live (Huozhe), Sun., Dec. 1, 7:30 p.m. Town and Gown Movie Night. Directed by Yimou Zhang • Screenplay by Wei Lu and Hua Yu, based on the novel by Hua Yu • 125 min. • China/Hong Kong • 1994 • Not Rated • In Mandarin with English subtitles. Curated/Presented by Skidmore Professor Mao Chen. As director David Lean introduced mil-lions of Americans to the saga of the Russian Revolution through the travails of a physician named Zhivago, so did director Zhang Yimou, in 1994, animate the epic drama of modern China through the personal odyssey of Fugui (Ge You), a rich, heedless gambler who loses his fam-ily’s ancestral home in a game of dice, and is deserted by his wife, Jiazhen (Gong Le). Scraping together a living as a peddler and a puppeteer, Fugui is arrested by the Nationalists, liberated by the Communists, and eventually reunited with his family. 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. saratogafilmforum.org. 518 584 3456. Tickets: $7/$5 members and students with ID.

Saratoga Small Business SaturdaySARATOGA SPRINGS - The Saturday after Thanksgiving is nationally known as “Small Business Saturday” and is a day designed to support and encourage commerce for small local businesses. Thurs., Dec. 12, 7:30 p.m.; Fri., Dec. 13, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 15, 3:00 p.m. Writ-ten and directed by Nicole Holofcener • 93 min. • USA • 2013 • Rated PG-13. Enough Said, written and directed by Nicole Holofcener (Please Give) is a sharp, insightful comedy that humorously explores the mess that often comes with getting involved again. Eva (Julia Louis Dreyfus) is a divorcée and single parent. She enjoys her work as a masseuse, but is dread-ing her daughter’s impending departure for college. She meets Albert (the late James Gandolfi ni in his last role), who is sweet and funny and also facing an empty nest, and their romance quickly blossoms. Meanwhile, Eva befriends her new massage client Marianne (Catherine Keener), a beautiful poet whom Eva fi nds “almost perfect” except for the way Marianne incessantly criticizes her ex-husband. It gets in her head, and as Eva learns the truth about Marianne’s ex, she fi nds herself suddenly doubt-ing her own relationship with Albert. 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. saratogafi lmforum.org. 518 584 3456. Saratoga Film ForumSARATOGA SPRINGS - Muscle Shoals, Fri,. Nov. 29, 7:30 p.m., Sun., Dec. 1, 3:00 p.m. Directed by Greg “Freddy” Cama-lier • 111 min. • USA • 2013 • Rated PG. Muscle Shoals Sound Studio is the focus of this new documentary. It started with Rick Hall, who overcame crushing poverty and staggering trag-edies to bring black and white musicians together in Alabama’s cauldron of racial hostility to create music for the generations. 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. saratogafilmforum.org. 518 584 3456. Saratoga Film ForumSARATOGA SPRINGS - WADJDA. Thurs., Dec. 5, 7:30 p.m.; Fri., Dec. 6, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m. Written and directed by Haifaa Al-Mansour • 98 min. • Saudi Arabia/Germany • 2012 • Rated PG • In Arabic with English subtitles. Wadjda is the first feature film to be shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, and is the first feature film made by a female Saudi filmmaker. Wadjda (Waad Mohammed) is an 11-year-old Saudi girl living in the capital city Riyadh. Every day on her way to school she passes a green bicycle in a store window—and is determined to one day own that bicycle so she can race against her friend Abdullah (Abdullrahman Algohani), a boy from the neighborhood. However, the idea of girls riding bikes is frowned upon, and Wadjda’s mother (Reem Abdullah) refuses to buy one for her. Will Wadjda ever own the bike? Will she win the race against Abdullah? The movie was five years in the making, largely due to the fact that Saudi Arabia has no film industry—or indeed any movie theaters. Complicating matters was the fact that, since she wasn’t allowed to publicly mix with the men in the crew, the director had to work from the back of a van communicating via walkie-talkie watching the actors on a monitor. 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. saratogafilmforum.org. 518 584 3456. Tickets: $7/$5 members and students with ID.

How To Go Green When Holiday Shopping The color green is synonymous with the holiday season. But as holiday revelers deck their halls with green this season, they also can go green when shopping for loved ones.

Many shoppers are concerned by their carbon footprints. In an effort to embrace a more eco-friendly lifestyle, such shoppers may look for ways to continue their holiday traditions, but do so in a way that’s more considerate of the environment. Though the holiday season is often associated with excess, holiday shoppers can still fi nd eco-friendly ways to put smiles on their loved ones’ faces this year.

* Purchase energy effi cient products. The holiday season is a great time of year to fi nd deals on major appliances, which may be on sale to make room for next year’s models. When shopping for appli-ances this holiday season, shoppers should look for energy effi cient products that consume less energy without sacrifi cing performance. Since the institution of its ENERGY STAR(R) program in 1992, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has helped consumers invest in energy-effi cient products that helped reduce air pollution and energy consumption. The program has since expanded into Canada as well. When purchasing appliances this holiday season, shoppers should look for ENERGY STAR qualifi ed products, which can protect the environment and also save consumers money on utility bills.

* Plan shopping trips in advance. The holiday season can be hectic, and as a result many holiday shoppers fi nd themselves getting their holiday shopping done as time allows. But breaking up holiday shopping into several trips can increase fuel consumption and lead to more time spent in traffi c, where vehicle emissions can contribute to air pollution. Instead of getting your shopping done on several quick trips, plan a holiday shopping trip in advance, setting aside enough time to get as much shopping done as possible in a single trip. This can cut back on some of the stress of holiday shopping and benefi t the environment at the same time.

* Set up a holiday shopping carpool. Many people carpool to and from work, and such a system can be employed when holiday shopping as well. Plan a shopping trip to the mall with neighbors or friends to cut back on your fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Sedan or coupe owners may want to limit their carpools to two people so there’s enough room in the car for gifts on the way home, while minivan or SUV owners should still have ample room for multiple passengers and their presents. Remove unnecessary cargo from the trunk or other storage areas before beginning your trip.

* Create your own gifts. Worried about purchasing products with excessive packaging? Then try your hand at creating gifts in-stead of giving overpackaged store-bought items. Homemade gifts may be more well-received than another necktie or pair of slippers, and such gifts don’t have to be packaged at all.

* Buy local. When shopping for the holiday, look for locally-produced products, whether it’s arts and crafts produced at a nearby store or organic foods purchased from a local farmer’s market. Locally produced products don’t need to be shipped to make it onto the shelves at local stores, making such products far more eco-friendly than mass-produced products shipped from factories far away.

The holidays may not seem like an eco-friendly time of year, but shoppers can take steps to reduce their carbon footprints when shopping this holiday season.

Shoppers can coordinate their holiday shopping trips, carpooling to the mall in an effort to be more eco-friendly.

Did You Know? According to the American Bankers Association, many merchants view debit card purchases in the same light that they do purchases made with cash or personal checks. That’s an important distinction for holiday shoppers to consider before making purchases, as any items bought on their debit cards may only be worthy of store credit instead of a full refund should such items need to be returned. Shoppers buying gifts for friends and family members should understand that, even if they remember to include gift receipts when wrapping gifts, those items may only be eligible for store credit if purchased with a debit card. When buying items with credit cards, consumers can withhold payment if they are not satisfi ed with the product. No such option ex-ists when using debit cards. In addition to more restrictive return policies, shoppers who use debit cards may incur debit transaction fees, This means they are charged each time they use their debit cards, or such fees may be triggered when users use their card too often. Debit card users can check the agreement signed when they opened their accounts to determine if they will be subjected to debit transaction fees. Holidays shoppers whose purchases are subject to such fees may want to avoid using their debit cards during the holiday season.

Prevent Identity Theft During The HolidaysAs the holiday shopping season approaches, consumers are once again preparing to do a signifi -cant amount of their holiday shopping online, while many others will rely on debit and credit cards to make their in-store purchases. Though banks and online retailers have made holiday shopping easier in many ways, that convenience has also made shoppers more vulnerable to identity theft. The hectic nature of the holidays season can make it harder for holiday shoppers to recognize if their personal information has been compromised. As a result, many men and women do not re-alize that they have been victimized by identity thieves until after the season has come and gone. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, identity theft affects 10 million Americans each year, costing individuals and businesses $52 billion. But Americans aren’t the only ones at risk of identity theft, which can victimize holiday shoppers whether they’re shopping at the nearby mall or from the comforts of home. When shopping this holiday season, shoppers should consider the following safety measures to reduce their risk of identity theft.* Confi rm the legitimacy of online retailers. Many online scammers masquerade as legitimate businesses. Some may even steal logos or information from real businesses to make their scam appear more legitimate. When shopping online, stick to well-known retailers or verify with the Better Business Bureau or another watchdog organization that a Web site is operated by a reputable business.* Check for a secured browser. Reputable online retailers encrypt their customers’ personal information. Look for a “locked” icon on the browser before entering payment information, or check to see if the URL has an “https” prefi x, which means the site is secured.* Beware of credit card skimmers. Skimmers are devices that read the information on the mag-netic strip of a credit or debit card. Some are planted on ATM machines or self-service kiosks at stores. They can be hard to detect. Certain skimmers can even skim the information off a card while it is still in a wallet or purse. Some devices can block the capture of signals from the cards. But even consumers who have such devices should still check their bank and credit card state-ments to determine if their cards have been skimmed.* Promptly check credit and debit balances for accuracy. Routinely check purchases against the records of credit card companies and banks. Log into online accounts to verify any purchases and report any inaccuracies immediately. Recognizing fraudulent activity early on can help consumers recover their money quickly and prevent any further problems.* Opt for credit over debit. Credit cards come with zero liability policies, which means consum-ers will not be held responsible for fraudulent purchases. Debit cards do not always offer the same level of protection, and debit cards linked directly to a bank account could put consumers at greater risk.* Keep receipts. Being cautious with receipts doesn’t just facilitate potential returns. Receipts often include a lot of personal information, including the shopper’s name, signature and credit card number. These receipts could be the doorway to identity theft.* Password protect everything. A lost smartphone or tablet could provide a thief with a lot of personal information if it is not locked down with a password. Also, always use a secured wire-less signal when shopping online or accessing personal account information.* Don’t carry extraneous information in a wallet. A lost wallet is less problematic when it isn’t fi lled with scores of credit cards and a social security card. Consumers should limit the amount of personal information stored in their wallets.

If you step back and try to be objective, the practice of installing a tree inside our home at this time of year seems a bit bizarre. How did all this get started; and when?

The symbolism and use of trees as decorations at this time of year are far older than many of us suspect. It is known, for instance, that pre-Christian Romans displayed decorated evergreens (oak trees which are evergreen in that part of the world). They lit the tree with candles and often topped the tree with a sun symbol. The ancient Celts of the British Isles also ornamented oak trees with apples and candles to offer thanks to the sun during the sol-stice period.

Many of us can still remember when the Christmas tree wasn’t put up until Christmas Eve. This tradition likely had its roots (no pun intended, well...maybe) in the English tradi-tion of bringing home the Yule log on Christmas Eve. The Yule log was generally a large stump, often including the roots, and was decorated with mistletoe, holly and other greenery. The log was lighted with a bit of the previous year’s log (thus protecting the house from fi re for the upcoming year) and needed to be kept burning for at least twelve hours to insure continued good fortune.

With the advent of central heating, the appeal of the Yule log has been all but forgotten.

The evergreen tree as the tree of choice for solstice celebrating appears to have its origins in the Christianizing of the Germanic tribes of Eastern Europe. Some of the earliest accounts tell of St. Boniface dedicating the fi r tree to the Christ Child with the oath “You are the light of the world, a tree ever green” to counter the sacred oak of Odin in the eighth century.

Other accounts credit Martin Luther as the fi rst to bring home a cut evergreen tree and decorate it with candles that symbolize the stars in the sky over Bethlehem the night Christ was born.

Hundreds of years passed until the tradition of decorating evergreen trees at Christmas became common. It wasn’t until 1841 when King Albert displayed a decorated evergreen tree in his palace that the tradition took hold in English speaking countries.

Like the American people, American Holiday celebrations have become a melting pot of customs and traditions brought to our shores from the older cultures of our forefathers. The evergreen, ancient symbol of life ever lasting is still included as the bright focal point of a celebration of rebirth, light and life.

Whatever the origins of the practice, I love the smell of a fresh Balsam Fir when I bring it inside. The trick is to keep the tree hydrated so the needles stay on and the tree stay fresh and fragrant. The fi rst step is to get a fresh tree. When you’re out in the tree lot picking out your tree, bent the little branch tips to make sure they are supple, not brittle. With Thanksgiv-ing as late as it is this year, all the fi rs should be in fi ne shape. Beware of spruce trees which are notorious for falling apart quickly once they’re cut and brought inside.

Next, make sure to make a fresh cut on the base of the tree right before you bring it in-side. The reason this is so important is because the tree has sucked air into the bottom-most cells of the trunk. Even if the tree is placed in water, it can’t absorb it because the fi rst cells at the base are clogged with air. A fresh cut exposes fresh cells that can absorb water and sent it along to the cells above right out to the branches and needles. Most tree lots will offer to make this fresh cut for you. This is fi ne if you’re going to rush home and get the tree into water within and hour. If it will be longer than that, you might as well wait and make your own fresh cut on the tree at home.

Make sure that your tree stand is clean before you put your tree into it. If your tree stand is like mine, it spends most of its time in the shed gathering dust. If you don’t clean this dust out, it will mix with the water the tree is absorbing and clog up those all important cells that you just exposed at the base of the truck when you made your fresh cut. When you place the tree into the stand, fi ll the stand up with very hot water. Hot water is absorbed more quickly than cold water so the tree will re-hydrate as quickly as possible. You don’t need to use hot water every time you add water to the stand; just the fi rst time. Make sure that the tree stand always has water in it. If you let it run dry, the tree will suck air into the bottom cells again and it won’t be able to absorb water until another fresh cut is made. This isn’t likely to hap-pen once the tree is decorated. Remember: Fresh Tree, Fresh Cut and Fresh Water. Thanks for the read.

Saratoga Film ForumSARATOGA SPRINGS - The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari. Sun., Dec. 15, 7:30 p.m. Town and Gown Movie Night. Directed by Robert Wiene • Story by Carl Mayer and Hans Janowitz • 67 min. • Germany • 1912 • Silent. Curated/Presented by Skidmore Professor Mary-Elizabeth O’Brien. This 52-minute screening leaves ample time for a conversation with Skidmore College German Professor Mary-Elizabeth O’Brien, who has taught and written about German Expressionist and silent cine-ma. A carnival comes to a tiny German town, with some creepy featured attractions. Have the brilliant hypnotist, Dr. Caligari, and the sinister somnambulist under his control, something to do with the serial murders in the village? Will the hero, Fran-cis, solve the mystery before the killer strikes again? Writers Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer considered film a new artistic medium that demanded collaboration between writers, paint-ers, cameramen, actors, directors. Hence the famously distorted sets, the actors’ weird choreography, the long painted shadows. The film has influenced musicians, too, from the Goth group Bauhaus to Pere Ubu, Coldplay, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. saratogafilmforum.org. 518 584 3456. Longest Roads In

North America Road trips are popular all year long, and driving the same roads during various seasons can yield entirely different views along the way. Many scenic highways can take travelers across the country, and for those driv-ers interested in traveling the longest roads in North Amer-ica, there are two options at the ready.

At 4,990 miles (8,030 kilo-meters), the Trans-Canada Highway is the longest road-way in North America. It is a federal-provincial highway system that travels through all 10 provinces of Canada between the Atlantic and Pacifi c Oceans. A person can travel all the way from Newfoundland to British Co-lumbia on the highway. The system was approved in 1949 and the highway offi cially opened in 1962. Drivers on the highway will easily recognize the green-and-white maple leaf route markers.

Drivers south of the Canadian border can travel along U.S. Route 20. Spanning 3,365 miles (5,415 kilometers), Route 20 is an east-west highway and the longest road in the United States. In the east, Route 20 terminates in Boston, Mass. In the west, it ends at Newport, Ore. The “0” in the route’s number indicates it is a coast-to-coast route. Route 20 travels through Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts.

Although the length of U.S. Route 6 was shortened when California renumbered its highways in 1964 and a portion of the route was transferred to another highway, the road is the longest continuous roadway in the United States. It is not considered a major transcontinental route because Route 6 was gradually put together from other routes over time. But it still can get drivers from Massachusetts to California.
