Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING ANIMALOVERSCAPITAL REGION – AnimaLovers would like to thank the many individuals and companies in the Capital Region and beyond that supported our efforts in 2014, and especially those who contributed to our annual Holiday Appeal. The Holiday Ap-peal had special meaning to our many “matchmakers”, the volunteers that worked tirelessly to find the perfect home for each and every one of our cats. In 2014, the group found forever homes for nearly 400 cats and kittens! And the funds raised by our Holiday Appeal will help the organization con-tinue our efforts into 2015. This all-volunteer organization goes above and beyond to care for, and to get to know their cats prior to adoptions. SOME SIDE EFFECTS OF OBESITY MAY SURPRISE YOU According to the Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention, nearly 40 percent of the United States popu-lation is now considered obese, while an additional 34 percent are considered overweight. In Canada, 25 percent of the population is classifi ed as obese and 41 percent are overweight. These fi gures illustrate a potentially grave future for Canadians and Americans alike, as the consequences of being overweight or obese include diabetes, heart dis-ease and even death.

Obesity can have a very real and lasting impact on indi-viduals and future genera-tions. Here are some health eff ects that can be the result of carrying around too much weight.

CANCERThe National Cancer Insti-tute says each year thou-sands of new cases of can-cer in men and women can be linked to obesity. Some researchers feel that excess fat cells increase hormonal activity, which can lead to tumor growth.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSUREOverweight or obese peo-ple have a greater chance of developing high blood pressure. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the ar-teries while the heart pumps blood. High blood pressure

can weaken the heart over time, causing it to work less effi ciently, and may lead to aneurysm, heart failure or stroke.

INFERTILITYAs with cancer, the potential correlation between obesity and infertility requires fur-ther study. But there is some evidence that points to obe-sity as a contributing factor to infertility. Overweight women tend to have a hard-er time getting pregnant, and some researchers feel that is because fatty tissue may cause hormonal chang-es that impact conception.

TYPE 2 DIABETESWhen a person has type 2 diabetes, his or her body cannot use insulin properly. Over time, the body can-not make enough insulin to regulate blood sugar level. About 80 to 90 percent of people who are obese also have type 2 diabetes, and it’s believed that being over-weight places extra stress on the body’s ability to main-tain proper glucose levels in the blood, creating a greater need for insulin. This can cre-ate a vicious cycle, as insulin use itself can lead to weight gain.

OSTEOARTHRITISOverweight individuals fre-quently develop pain in the joints of their knees, hips and lower backs. The con-dition occurs as tissue that

protects the joints wears away. Extra weight also can wreak havoc on the feet that are forced to bear those ex-tra pounds.

PREMATURE BIRTHA study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that overweight women are at a greater risk of having a preterm delivery. Too much fat can weaken uterine and cervical membranes.

TROUBLE SLEEPINGObese and overweight people can have problems sleeping, says the American Sleep Foundation. Obesity can be linked to sleep ap-nea, a condition in which a person gasps for air or mo-mentarily stops breathing while asleep. This condition can result in frequent inter-ruptions in sleep and an overall poor quality of sleep.

Obesity and overweight can contribute to many health problems, some of which may come as a surprise to men and women who are carrying extra weight.

Being overweight or obese can con-tribute to a host of potentially debili-tating ailments.

WINTER SUPERFOODS FOR OPTIMAL HEALTHIllnesses seem to peak dur-ing the winter months. A tapped-out immune system as well as dry, cold air may encourage the spread of common viruses and bacte-rial infections more easily. As a result, it’s important that men, women and children take every step possible to ward off sickness when the temperatures drop. Dietary changes can make a world of diff erence, and more and more people are including these proven superfoods in their winter diets.

• Avocado: Avocado has high levels of essential fatty acids and vitamin B6, which is important in the biosyn-thesis of important neu-rotransmitters. Foods high in B vitamins may be able to counteract some of the symptoms of winter-related depression.

• Pomegranate: This quirky fruit has vitamins C and K, fo-late and potassium and is a good source of fi ber. Pome-granate has anti-infl amma-tory properties, which can help in reducing joint pain and preventing strokes. Pomegranate may also help the body fi ght viruses.

• Cinnamon: Cinnamon has high levels of antioxidants, and some studies point to cinnamon as a natural antibacterial agent. Cinna-mon also can help regulate blood-glucose levels, which is benefi cial for those with diabetes.

• Prunes: Now widely re-ferred to as “dried plums,” prunes are an important source of boron, which could prevent osteoporosis. High in antioxidants, prunes help the body fi ght a variety

of illnesses.

• Cabbage: Cabbage may be a key element in the fi ght against cancer. Cabbage has phytochemicals that can protect the body against cancer-causing free radi-cals. It’s also a good source of dietary fi ber, which can stimulate a sluggish diges-tive system.

• Butternut squash: This food is packed with carot-enoids, which are stellar an-tioxidants. The starches in this squash also have been found to have anti-infl am-matory properties.

• Chestnuts: Chestnuts are worthy of inclusion in any-one’s diet. Unlike many nuts, chestnuts are relatively low in fat but have high lev-els of protein. They’re also packed with vitamin C and B vitamins.

Finally, the days are starting to get a bit longer in the morning and evening. A sure sign of spring is the arrival of this year’s seed and gardening catalogs in the mailbox. The time spent perusing the latest offerings and enjoying all the lovely photos of plants in all their fl owering glory makes a nice escape from the frozen world outside.

Another way that I shake off the midwinter blues is to spend some time in my south facing room enjoying whatever sunshine our short days can muster among the houseplants that spend the winter there.

Regular readers have heard before about my collection of miniature geraniums. Rest assured, they’re all doing well and are responding to the slightly longer days with a burst of new growth and several are so happy with their situation that they’ve popped out a few buds. In a couple of weeks I’ll be enjoying a preview of summer when these little beauties burst into fl ower.

Besides my collection of miniature geraniums, there are other fl owering plants that have managed to fi nd their way into my indoor garden.

The African Violet is, without question, the most popular of all fl owering houseplants. Their prolifi c fl owering and soft, fuzzy leaves have delighted indoor gardeners for years. We’ve all heard stories about great-grandma’s prized violet whose descendents are still grown and loved by current family members.

The fi rst requirement to consider for African Violets is light. Violets need very strong but indirect sunlight. Many folks fi nd that a bright north-facing window is an ideal spot to grow African Violets. They’ll also thrive under fl uorescent lights.

The second requirement you’ll need to pay attention to to grow African Violets is tem-perature. They’ll require a daytime temperature of at least 70 degrees and should remain above 64 degrees at night.

Most folks don’t have too much trouble meeting the light and temperature needs of Af-rican Violets. The trickiest part of African Violet care is watering. Violets need to be kept lightly moist constantly and will not appreciate drying out completely. Realizing this, most folks over-compensate by keeping their Violets soggy wet (by leaving standing water in their saucers) which is even worse that letting them dry out. A nice, evenly moist soil is what we’re shooting for here. African Violets will also want to be watered with tepid or room temperature water. Very cold water from the tap will shock them. When watering your African Violets, try not to get water on the leaves as this will result in an unsightly spotting. Some folks avoid this problem by pouring the water into a saucer placed under the pot. This is a fi ne method but make sure to drain off and water that isn’t soaked-up after a few minutes to avid death from drowning.

I like to feed my African violets Peter’s Brand African Violet Food (no, no relation) at one-quarter strength every time I water to keep them healthy and fl owering. Wait until your violets are potbound before repotting. They will fl ower more if they feel a bit confi ned. Al-ways put African Violets into shallow plastic or ceramic pots. Clay or terra cotta pots dry too quickly to be benefi cial to African Violets.

If you keep your house cooler than 64 degrees at night, you may have trouble keeping African Violets. A better choice for the cooler home would be a cousin of the African Violet, the Cape Primrose or Streptocarpus. Streptocarpus has the same indirect light requirement as African Violets but can tolerate temperatures as low as 50 degrees at night without ill effects. Like African Violets, Streptocarpus like to be kept evenly moist but is much more forgiving of accidental dryness. With moderate care a Streptocarpus will thrive and fl ower for years. Unlike African Violets, Streptocarpus can get quite large if it is transplanted into larger size pots.

If you really like to save money by keeping you thermostat turned down, there’s still a fl owering plant option for your home….the Cyclamen. These tuberous plants thrive when nighttime temperatures drop below 60 degrees and prefer that daytime temperatures stay be-low 65 degrees. Keep you Cyclamen barely moist (never soggy). During the fl owering period, feed with a ¼ strength solution of Miracle-Gro. If you can manage not to over-water your Cyclamen, it should be able to maintain a set of its unique inverted fl owers for over three months!

If your house is very dry and you want to provide a little extra humidity, place the plants in a gravel-fi lled tray and add water to the top of the gravel. Place your plants on the gravel so the evaporating moisture passes over the leaves. Be sure the pots are not actually sitting in the water. Remember, nothing kills a plant quicker than drowning. Thanks for the read.

GOOD MOVES FOR BAD WEATHER DRIVING

(NAPS)—You can keep your vehicle on the road to safety even on rough roads and in cold, wet weather if you heed a few hints:

First, Prevent Problems• To help you see your way

clear to safer driving, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ (FCA) Mopar brand offers a heated windshield washer solvent kit that helps eliminate visual distractions such as ice, snow and frost. It activates shortly

after vehicle start-up and in-cludes all applicable wiring and equipment.

• Always enjoy a warm and warmed-up car. A fully inte-grated, OEM-tested Remote Start system from Mopar will start your car from as far away as 300 feet with just the push of a button.

• All-Weather Slush Mats feature molded, deep ribs to protect your car’s carpet and

keep it clean, safe and dry by trapping and holding water, snow and mud.

• Don’t let your skis and snowboards fall. Rack them securely on the Mopar Ski and Snowboard Rack. It even has an oversized push button for easy opening with your gloves on.

• Be sure your tires are in good shape and right for the roads you travel on. Fortu-

nately, you can fi nd hundreds of tires at competitive prices at FCA dealerships.Next, Protect Your Finances

If Problems Do OccurMaking that easier are Mopar Vehicle Protection (MVP) Road Hazard Tire & Wheel Plans, which offer extra cov-erage in the event of pothole,

curb and other road hazard damage.Available exclusively through FCA dealerships, you can cover tires and wheels for as many as seven years. You get full repair or replacement costs, including the cost of mounting, balancing and stems—up to $1,500 a year for all four tires and wheels, even aftermarket wheels. The plan even provides $100 “Sign-And-Go” towing and roadside assistance, all with a $0 deductible per repair visit.A Customer Convenience Package provides additional coverage, including:• $35 First Day Rental (or taxi reimbursement)• $35 a Day Car Rent-al Allowance (or taxi reimbursement)• $1,000 Trip Interruption Coverage. Mopar is a simple contrac-tion of the words “motor” and “parts,” and is the source for genuine parts and accessories for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles brands. Mopar parts are engi-neered by the same teams that create factory-authorized ve-hicle specifi cations for FCA vehicles.
