1814 Execution of Soldier in Greenbush, NY Was WrongCAPITAL REGION – I came upon this local history story by chance. A soldier (un-named) was executed for desertion at Cantonment, Greenbush (now the grounds of Red Mill School) in 1814 during the War of 1812. I have a copy of an offi cer’s (also un-named) written witness account of the execution. It is very clear from this account the charge of desertion was wrong and, hence, the execution was wrong. I am now trying to locate records of this court martial and execution in an attempt to right this wrong and clear this man’s name of desertion. I am making progress in establishing some identities with the help of local historians. If anyone can help with information or suggestions, I would be most appreciative. Paddy’s Day Craft For Kids With overfl owing spirits, pub crawls and boisterous parades, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are largely geared toward adults. Although children may experience a little bit of the festivities, they may not be able to participate fully in all of the activities.
That is why parents, teachers and caregivers can develop child-friendly activities that will enable children to enjoy the festivities of the day but also to do so in a way that is safe and age-appropriate.
One of the easiest ways to engage children for the holiday is to enable them to create hand-made decorations and games that can be displayed. With a few simple supplies, children can create a variety of festive items to share their enthusiasm.
An idea to get them started is to construct a rainbow and pot of gold complete with lepre-chaun.
To do so gather the following supplies:
* poster board * clean, empty gallon milk container * crepe paper in rainbow colors and in black
* gold foil circles * construc-tion paper * glue * scissors * glitter, if desired
1. Draw and cut out a lepre-chaun using various shades of construction paper. Glue it to the posterboard.
2. Cut out half of the milk container to form a “pot.” Use glue to adhere black crepe pa-per to it. Attach to the poster-board.
3. Stick gold foil circles to form the “gold coins” that will be fi lling the pot of gold.
4. Cut out pieces of crepe pa-per from the rainbow colors and attach to the posterboard to form the rainbow. Let the pieces end right near the pot of gold.
5. Allow kids to embellish further with glitter and any other things they may have on hand.
Display the leprechaun with a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in a prime spot dur-ing your St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
