SARATOGA FILM FORUMSARATOGA SPRINGS - LIFE FEELS GOOD (Chce sie zyc). Thurs., Apr. 3, 7:30 p.m.; Fri., Apr. 4, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., Apr. 6, 3:00 p.m. Written and directed by Maciej Pieprzyca • 107 min. • Poland • 2013 • Not Rated • In Polish with English subtitles. From Po-land comes a film that swept the Montréal Film Festival last year. Mateusz (Dawid Ogrodnik) was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child and throughout his life has tried to communi-cate to the outside world that he is an intelligent and sentient human being. Unfortunately, his attempts at communication are misread as hysteria and thus quashed, and he is treated like a mindless husk. Until Magda (Katarzyna Zawadzka), a beautiful new nurse, arrives and pays him some atten-tion—but her own neuroses have repercussions for Mateusz. Although incomprehensible to the characters in the film, Mateusz provides the audience with interior monologues that ironically counterpoint the his spastic sounds and move-ments. 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. saratogafilmforum.org. 518 584 3456. Tickets: $7/$5 members and students with ID.

LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC AT LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF
NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC offers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have gotten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned income falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depending on your filing status and number of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple filing jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefit. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and filing requirements must be met. You must file a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to file. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm.

CALLING ALL MENTORS!
CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encourage-ment, guidance and advo-cacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guid-ance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently look-ing for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Imme-diate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your commu-nity, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].

SARATOGA SPRINGS CITY CENTER WELCOMES SARATOGA
SURRENDER SCULPTURESARATOGA SPRINGS - The City Center’s 30th Anniversary celebration continues as it welcomes the “Saratoga Surren-der Sculpture,” a bronze bas-relief, on loan from The Friends of Saratoga Battlefield. This massive 4’ by 6’ bronze depicts the “turning point of America’s Revolutionary War,” when Brit-ish General Burgoyne surrendered his sword to American General Gates. The event was a pivotal moment in America’s quest for independence. This impressive new work of art was created by Chas Fagan, a nationally known painter and sculp-tor. The subject is based on artist John Trumbull’s famous oil painting called “The Surrender of John Burgoyne,” which is prominently housed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. The “Sarato-ga Surrender Sculpture” is now on display in the City Center’s main lobby for the public to appreciate Monday through Fri-day from the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through Monday, May 19, 2014. The City Center is located at 522 Broadway in Saratoga Springs, NY. After a tour of various venues in Sarato-ga County, the artwork will be permanently placed in a new memorial park called the Saratoga Surrender Site, south of Schuylerville, NY. The City Center is pleased to have another occasion to welcome the community through its doors and continue the effort of “Bringing People Together.”

After being cooped up for so many months, we’re all anxious to get outside and clean up our yards and get on with gardening projects. Even though it is still very cool, there’s a lot that can get planted right away. Fruit trees, rose bushes and even hardy fl ower bulbs like lilies can be planted now even though freezing temperatures and even another snowstorm (I know, I know) are still a possibility. These plants are hardy and are perfectly capable of en-during through the vagaries of early spring weather. In fact, it is actually better to get hardy plants in the ground as early as possible so they can take advantage of cool soil to grow a strong root system. Of course we’ll want to wait another month and a half before we start planting tender bulbs like dahlias and such. If you’re unsure about what you can plant right now, just drop by your local garden center and they’ll be happy to fi ll you in.
Planting seems simple enough but, through all my years of garden retailing, I’ve noticed that most plant deaths are not caused by bugs or lack of water but ignoring “proper planting depth”. Planting depth refers to how deeply the plant is set into the soil. Most folks do a great job preparing the soil using peat moss, bone meal, and other additives to insure survival and growth. The BIG MISTAKE PART 1 usually occurs at the fi nal stage of the planting process. If, for instance, you’re planting a tree, you’ll dig the hole only as deep as the ball or pot that contains the roots. At the bottom of the hole you’ll blend an equal amount of peat moss with the original soil. For an average sized tree or shrub, you’ll want to add about a cup or so of bone meal into this blend. The soil at the bottom of the hole should be very loose since you’ve been mixing it.
Next, (and this is where the BIG MISTAKE PART 1 occurs), you should place the tree into the hole and check for PROPER PLANTING DEPTH. The spot where the trunk of the tree meets the soil of its ball or pot should exactly match the level of the soil around your planting hole. In other words, the plant’s stem or trunk should NOT be sunk below the level of the surrounding area. The easiest way to check this is to lay a stick (the handle of your shovel is handy) across the planting hole and make sure that the top of the root ball is level with the ground. If the plant is too low, remove it from the hole and add soil to the bottom to raise it up until you get it at the proper level. This seems trivial but it can make all the differ-ence to the plants’ health and survival.
Once you’ve made sure that the crown of the plant (the dividing line on the plant be-tween what is above the ground and what is below) is at the proper level, fi ll in the rest of the planting hole. You can add more peat moss and bone meal around the sides of the root ball but make sure that the top 1/4 of the hole is fi lled in with just the original soil with no peat moss added. Peat moss improves the soil’s ability to retain moisture. When added to the surface, peat moss will dry out and, in a wick-like manner, draw moisture from below the plant, drying it out.
This is the point where inexperienced gardeners make the BIG MISTAKE PART 2. When you dig a hole then fi ll it with a large root ball, there’s going to be soil left over. What do we do with it? At this point many will opt to pile it up around the trunk or stem. I guess it looks cozy; like tucking the plant in or something. I really don’t know why it’s done. The point is: DON’T DO IT! It will have the same negative effect as planting too deeply. If the stem or trunk above ground is covered with soil, it hinders the plant’s ability to pass moisture and nutrients from the root system to the branches and leaves above. Use the extra soil to build a dish-shaped dike or berm out away from the stem of the plant. This will collect water and direct it down to the root system below. The importance of maintaining proper planting depth extends to 99% of planting situations. There are rare exceptions (like tomatoes) but it is a rule that is best obeyed. From maple trees to marigolds and even your houseplants. You should also take care when applying bark and other mulches not to pile them up against the stems and trunks of plants. I’m always (sadly) amazed when I see trees with bark mulch piled in a volcano shaped mound around the trunks of trees. Remember: roots is roots and stems is stems. Bury the roots but let the stems be free to breathe. Thanks for the read.
