While there he held positions of Facilities Supervisor, Director of Facilities & Communications and Vice Presi-dent of Technical Support. Prior Ballston Spa National Bank, Milanese was self-employed as a partner in Milanese & Sons General Contracting. First New York Federal Credit Union was founded in 1937 as Schenectady Teachers Federal Credit Union and now operates seven full service branches throughout the greater Capital Region. The credit union offers traditional financial products found at many financial insti-tutions including checking and savings accounts, share certificates and money market ac-counts, auto and personal loans, mortgages and home equity loans, and commercial deposit and loan accounts. SARATOGA SPRINGS CITY

CENTER WELCOMES SARATOGA SURRENDER SCULPTURE

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The City Center’s 30th Anniver-sary celebration continues as it welcomes the “Sara-toga Surrender Sculpture,” a bronze bas-relief, on loan from The Friends of Sara-toga Battlefi eld. This massive 4’ by 6’ bronze depicts the “turning point of America’s Revolutionary War,” when British General Burgoyne surrendered his sword to American General Gates. The event was a pivotal moment in America’s quest for inde-pendence. This impressive new work of art was created by Chas Fagan, a nationally known painter and sculptor. The subject is based on artist John Trumbull’s famous oil painting called “The Surren-der of John Burgoyne,” which is prominently housed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. The “Saratoga Surrender Sculp-ture” is now on display in the City Center’s main lobby for the public to appreciate Monday through Friday from the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through Monday, May 19, 2014. The City Center is located at 522 Broadway in Saratoga Springs, NY. After a tour of various venues in Saratoga County, the art-work will be permanently placed in a new memorial park called the Saratoga Sur-render Site, south of Schuy-lerville, NY. The City Center is pleased to have another oc-casion to welcome the com-munity through its doors and continue the eff ort of “Bringing People Together.”

BUICK - GMCCAR BATTERY CARE IN EXTREME WEATHER

Few things can be more frustrating than jumping into the driver’s seat on a frosty morning, turning the key in the ignition and failing to hear the engine roar to life. Frigid weather can cause trouble with a car’s battery. Some drivers do not understand why, but getting the facts can help people avoid having to deal with dead batteries on cold winter days.Cold temperatures wreak havoc on batteries because they slow the chemical reaction inside of the battery. Batteries work by combining lead plates with lead dioxide and sulfuric acid to create electrons. While batteries can function under myriad conditions, the cold weather tends to degrade high-quality batteries and may render subpar batteries useless. The cold weather can cause the fl uid in the battery to freeze and lose function. A battery that is frozen will not hold a charge, and, as a result, the car won’t start.* Assess the age of your battery. If your battery is old, now may be the time to replace it. Bat-teries diff er in how long they last, but many last anywhere from fi ve to 10 years. If your car is still running on its original battery and your card is several years old, it may be a good idea to get a new battery before the arrival of winter. Battery size will not necessarily provide better starting. It’s important to buy the correct battery for the make of your car, which can usually be found inside of the owner’s manual.* Verify that there is no corrosion. Corrosion can prevent a car from starting just as much as a worn-out battery. Corrosion is caused by a faulty connection that allows battery acid to es-cape and corrode surrounding areas. Regularly inspect the battery to keep abreast of issues that may cause corrosion. Carefully clean away any corrosive residue that has formed and make sure the battery is correctly seated.* Install a battery blanket. A battery blanket is used to wrap around the battery and fi t inside of the battery cover. A cord with a plug runs from the blanket to a wall outlet. The blanket can produce enough heat to keep the battery fl uid from freezing. A trickle charger can also be mounted on the battery. It will deliver enough power to the battery while the car is off to keep it from freezing. * Minimize the use of automotive accessories. Do not start the car with the heater and the radio on. They can use up the power coming from the car’s alternator and prevent the battery from charging. Do not leave the heat and the radio on while the car is idling. Otherwise the car will not be putting out enough power for the alternator to charge the battery and power the electrical systems.* Disconnect the battery. If your car will be stored in a garage for the winter, disconnect the battery. Certain devices, such as clocks and alarm systems, continue to drain battery power when the vehicle is off . If your car will not be driven enough to recharge the battery, keep it disconnected when the automobile is being stored.

As we wait for our world to thaw, I’d like to take some space to refl ect on a couple of people that made contributions to the world of agriculture. These two men developed insights into the world of plants and products that could be produced from plants that borders on mystical. One was born at the end of the Civil War and overcame great hardship to become a respected agricultural chemist. The other was relatively uneducated and yet managed to introduce over 800 new plant varieties during his lifetime; a feat that has yet to be outdone. The two men are George Washington Carver and Luther Burbank.

George Washington Carver was born of slave parents in 1864 or 1865 in Missouri on the Moses Carver plantation. Like most slave children of the time, he took the name of his parent’s owner. His father is believed to have been a slave at a neighboring farm although not much is known of him. Baby George and his mother were kidnapped by raiders from the south and although Moses Carver managed to locate baby George after the war was over (Moses Carver had to trade a racehorse to gain his release), his mother was never located and he never saw her again.

Although not technically a slave, George remained at the Carver plantation as a boy. He was sick upon his return and was kept from hard labor. Instead, he cooked, sewed and tended the plantation’s gardens (which he loved best of all). It is said that he also wandered the woods “talking to the fl ow-ers” and collecting them. He even earned a reputation at this young age as a “plant doctor” often consulting with neighbors about plant problems they were having. During this time he also managed to teach himself to read and developed a strong desire to get an education; not the easiest thing for a black child in those days. At the tender age of 10, George left the Carver plantation to make his way in the world on his own. While he was earning his high school diploma, he supported himself by working as a farmhand, cook and in a laundry. He applied to Highland University but was refused admission when it was learned he was black. Finally, he was admitted to Simpson College in 1890. By this time Carver was about 30 years old. There were no science courses at Simpson so he studied piano and painting. An instructor there recognized Carver’s horticultural talent and encouraged him to pursue that rather than the arts. He took her advice to heart and was admitted in 1891 to the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now known as Iowa State University). Here, George Washington Carver blossomed into a true renaissance man. He was a leader in the YMCA. He was captain of the debate club and the campus military regiment. The school newspaper published his poetry and he even had two of his paintings exhibited at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. In spite of his excellence in the arts, Carver’s horticultural prowess allowed him to remain at the college as a graduate student. His insights and innovations with plant breeding led to his appointment to the faculty; another fi rst at Iowa State College. In 1896, George Washington Carver, after publishing several papers on his work, completed his master’s degree.

It was at this point that Booker T. Washington invited Carver to join the faculty of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. It was here that all his training and intuition would revolutionize and revitalize agriculture in the south. For many generations farmers in the south had grown cotton. The soil was depleted and cotton was no longer a viable crop. Carver devised a method of crop rotation where a legume crop (such as peanuts) would be planted every other year to replenish nitrogen and minerals in the soil. This method was quite successful but soon there was a surplus of peanuts. Undaunted, Carver the chemist went to work to see what products could be developed from peanuts to make them a more valuable commodity. I guess you could say he succeeded. He managed to develop 325 prod-ucts from peanuts and their shells. Products that range from nitroglycerine to hand lotion to animal feed to linoleum. So successful was he that soon farmers in the south were making more money on peanuts than on “king cotton”. While his remarkable development of peanut products is what Carver is best known for, it is just the tip of the iceberg. He introduced over 100 products from sweet pota-toes and many hundreds of products from many other plants and even products derived from clay.

While all these accomplishments are astounding to the point of being almost unbelievable, it is the philosophy of this great scholar that is the most endearing. Fame and wealth were of no importance to him at all. “God did not charge me or you for making peanuts. Why should I profi t from their products?” He stated. His goal was to use his knowledge for the betterment of all and he encour-aged his students to adopt the same attitude. He strove to make benefi cial products from the common things that could be found near at hand. He advanced chemistry and agricultural as none before had. Although he was born out of slavery he was, in great part, responsible for the resurrection of southern agriculture.

To be sure, Carver’s intellect and education enabled him to successfully develop the various prod-ucts from the plants he found around the south. But, there’s more to it than pure science. His ability to understand the potential of a plant was uncanny and puzzled scientists. Carver contended that God and the plants themselves communicated with him. He was known to arise before dawn and wander the woods about Tuskegee just as he had the woods of Missouri in his childhood. It was during these pre-dawn treks that he gained inspiration. “Nature is the greatest teacher and I learn from her best when the others are asleep. In the still hours before sunrise God tells me of the plans I am to fulfi ll.” was his honest explanation. Considering his genius and the results of his labor, it’s hard to dispute his beliefs as unbelievable as they sound. He was an American genius and overcame hardship and prejudice to fulfi ll what he considered his sacred mission on behalf of humanity. We owe him much. Next week: the amazing Luther Burbank. Thanks for the read.

SELF-DRIVING CARS COULD BE THE FUTURE OF

TRAVEL The electronics and com-puter-driven features of modern automobiles con-tinue to evolve at a rapid pace. Until now, however, most of these features have been manually employed. But the self-driving car, once a concept reserved only for science fi ction, may make driving even more passive in the near future, with some slated to hit showrooms as early as 2017.

Google, as a pioneer of some of the more ad-vanced self-driving auto-mobile technologies, says that computer-navigated cars are safer than manu-ally operated automobiles. But will the public embrace such vehicles? Autonomous cars are already being oper-ated in California, Nevada, Florida and certain areas within the United Kingdom. At the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Toyota and Audi unveiled their prototypes to sell to regular car buyers, while Ford and Mercedes-Benz are working on their own self-driving technology.

Legislation within the United States has already paved the way for autonomous cars to be tested on private roads. Once these cars are made available to the public, legislators will begin the task of revising driving laws and may need to reconsider how drivers earn their licenses.

Although the technology diff ers depending on the manufacturer, in the Google autonomous vehicle, a number of compo-nents are working in concert to enable the vehicle to move safely. At the heart of the system is a laser range fi nder mounted on the roof of the car. This laser generates a detailed 3D map of the environment. The car then combines these laser measure-

ments with established high-resolution maps of the world. The vehicle also employs other sensors in its technology. Radars mounted on the front and rear bumpers enable the car to detect its surroundings. Cameras detect traffi c lights, while GPS and inertial measurement units will help to keep track of the vehicle’s location and various movements. Data is also pro-grammed into the car so it can diff erentiate stationary objects like poles and mailboxes from factors in the environment, such as pedestrians or construction. The Google vehicles also are programmed to follow road rules and make assessments of changing situations, such as ad-vancing at a four-way-stop if other drivers have not yet moved into the intersection.

The goal of self-driving car manufacturers is to reduce congestion and accidents and keep traffi c fl owing more smoothly. Automakers will continue to conduct research to see how well self-driving cars and the people inside them work together.
