Everyone is always talking about “how things used to be…” The days when people knew what service meant, whatsacrifice was about and the art and work of chasing adream. These days, it’s harder to find a business that hassurvived through the years and still maintains their roots(pun intended).

The Curtis Michaels Full Service Salon is perfectly at home in his-toric San Juan Capistrano. Making history themselves, the CurtisMichaels salon has four generations working there, three of whichare exclusively in San Juan Capistrano.

The salon officially opened on April 1st, 1994, by owners Curtis andChantele Gallegos. They met years before, when Curtis owned an-other salon where Chantele had a small boutique space with herown label: Chantele Designs. Chantele also worked as a skilled man-icurist and it wasn’t long before Curtis fell for her and asked for herhand in marriage.

The two decided to follow their dreams, so together they sold every-thing and moved into a small converted garage to open up CurtisMichaels Full Service Salon. Chantele worked tirelessly, juggling herfashion, manicure and future styling career by working during theday and attending school at night. The business quickly became ahuge success and the couple eventually found themselves as inven-tors. Introducing the revolutionary ‘Colorrod,’ they spent many

ments, there are a variety of potential ways tolower your tax profile.

With tax rates increasing, particularly on divi-dends, one of the big issues will be where tohold particular investments. Certain invest-ments should be made in a tax deferred accountlike an IRA, 401K or pension plan, while othersmake more sense to hold personally. Tax har-vesting, capital gains assessment and other is-sues are becoming even more imperative. Callmy offices to learn more.

Reduce Interest Rate RiskIn December of 1977, 30 year Treasury bondswere yielding about 8% (yahoo.com finance). ByDecember 1981, rates had risen to about 13.5%.During that period, bonds that were bought in1977 fell in price by almost 45%! This is a realworld example of the investment fact that bondprices go down as interest rates increase.

With today’s 30 year Treasuries yielding about2.7%, the impact of rising interest rates is muchgreater. For example, a 2% increase in yield to4.7% would force an investor to discount theirbonds by nearly 50%!!! Bond rates haven’t risensharply in nearly 30 years so many investors don’ttruly understand this relationship, the elevatedlevel of risk potential and the possibly significantimpact on prices. Close caution is in order.

I feel that it is essential to analyze your bondsand exposure to interest rate increases. Somethings that one might consider are taking amore global bond perspective, decreasing theaverage maturity of your bonds, or looking intobond alternative investments with less direct ex-posure to interest rates. We can help with this.

Position to Benefit from InflationBased largely on the printing of money and debtglobally, a significant inflationary period lookslikely. Bear in mind that higher inflation is al-most always accompanied by higher interestrates which was noted above.

Fortunately, there are many things that can bedone beyond merely buying gold. For example, there are other commodity related investmentswhich would rise commensurately with inflationlike oil related businesses. Another approachwould be investments whose income streamwith the potential to rise in step with inflation. The good news is that many inflation correlatedassets fell significantly in price over the past 5to 10 years, particularly after the financial crisis.Call us to discuss smart ways that inflation sen-sitive investments could be included into yourportfolio.

Irrespective of where one falls along the political spectrum, investment markets couldcare less about your politics. So, let’s do what politicians can’t by taking a bi-partisanview of what Republican, Democrat and Independent investors should consider at thistime. With all of the changes, and potential changes, it is likely a very important time to

review your investments.

Address the “New Rules” of Investing with Adaptive ManagementThere is a New Normal for investors. It is largely centered on global investing, complex in-struments, highly refined methodologies and rapid 24 hour trading driven by technology.Comparatively, the “old” normal approach is far less sophisticated and slow moving.

In general, the old normal was to buy, hold and “just hang on” in severe crashes because“we’ll catch up eventually.” The problem with this strategy can be it may not be suited forthe fast-moving, volatile realities of the New Normal. One need only look at the 2000-2010,“lost decade,” with little or no returns for many investors to see the potential issues.

Our clients prefer an Adaptive Portfolio Management approach. An adaptive portfolio blendsthe best of the old normal with the advanced tools of the New Normal. Recognizing thatmarkets, industries or country economies change, the goal is to shift assets in order toadapt to changes in the environment, whether that be an opportunistic posture or a moreneutral or defensive posture, if conditions warrant.

Integrate Tax Efficiency with Investment GoalsTaxes are rising. The important question is: What can I do about it? When you understandthe law, the value of tax savings over time and how to interrelate these into your invest-

Traditional family doctor ideals and a modernapproach to health care

There was a time when it was common for a personto see one doctor over the course of their entirelife; when it was typical for a doctor to treat allmembers of the family, from grandpa to mom tojunior. He monitored their health, treated their mal-adies, stitched up their cuts, and helped them intheir crises. The doctor was called the family doc-tor, not just because he had a broad knowledge thatmade him capable of treating people of every age,but because, in a way, the doctor belonged to thefamily and the family belonged to the doctor.

A lot has changed. Today, for most of us it’s uncom-mon to see the same doctor twice in ten visits, much less for generations. And if we do have adedicated doctor, the likelihood of getting an ap-pointment with him or her when we’re in urgentneed is slim to nil.

That’s why Ross Medical Associates has stood outfor decades as an exception in south OrangeCounty. With deep roots in the history of the area,

Ross Medical is a group of doctors whose technology andbreadth of services continues to advance, while holding fast totraditional family practice ideals.

Dr. T.A. Ross was the first board certified family physician in theMission Viejo area and served as the first chief of staff for Mis-sion Hospital. Having grown up and gone to medical school inMinnesota, when Dr. Ross moved to Mission Viejo in 1969, hecame bearing the ideals and work ethic of a Midwest family doc-tor. He was simply committed to keeping families healthy, andhis bedside manner was so caring, he earned the nickname “Dr.Teddy Bear.” By the time he passed in 2008, Dr. Ross had longsince built one of the most well respected practices in OrangeCounty, where a group of associate doctors now carry onhis legacy.

Today, ten family doctors at Ross Medical Associates serve pa-tients in four locations: Flagship Oso Family Medical Group Mis-sion Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Ladera Ranch and SanJuan Capistrano. Their goal is for each patient to experiencecontinuity of care, which is the result of the true family doctorsetting. In order to do that, Ross Medical has uniquely combinedthe family practice atmosphere with urgent care capacities.

Ross Medical is able to provide extended services because theystay open 365 days a year; they are open late on weekdays; andtheir offices are equipped with electronic medical records anddiagnostic machines including digital x-rays and labs. Addition-ally, Ross Medical doctors make themselves available for same-day and walk-in appointments. They don’t want their patientsto be forced to go to the ER for anything short of a life-threat-ening emergency. As a Ross Medical patient, that means youcan keep your costs down and, ultimately, you have the oppor-tunity to stay in better health, because when you see your samedoctor consistently, you’re not slipping through the cracks.

The Ross Medical approach to pharmacy is innovative, too. Nothingis worse than standing around at a pharmacy at night, when you’refeeling horrible, waiting in line to submit a prescription, then wait-ing around while it gets filled. Ross Medical keeps commonly pre-scribed antibiotics and other prescriptions and OTC medicationson site in their offices for the convenience of those patients whoneed them. For everything else, they submit prescriptions electron-ically to off-site pharmacies to minimize errors, so when the patientshows up to get it, it’s ready and waiting for them.

Not many practices are providing this multifaceted approach, where the highly personalized care gets paired with highly acces-sible services. It’s a quality that makes Ross Medical stand out.

“We emphasize teamwork,” says Dr. Karl Gebhard, partner doctorat Ross Medical who has practiced at a large healthcare organi-zation and knows what it’s like to see patients get lost in the shuf-fle. “I encourage my patients to walk in to be seen if they needcare that day. My patients aren’t just a name and medical file ona computer screen.”

For Ross Medical doctors, ever-advancing technology is just an-other opportunity to provide traditional patient care at any loca-

With four offices, the doctors are able to provide continuity of care withelectronic medical records, which are accessible by all the doctors, whereverthey are – so any of Dr. Gebhard’s patients can walk into any Ross Medical officeand all of their records will be readily available to all associates caring for them.

Ross Medical Associates caring approach has not only resulted in lasting pa-tient relationships that span generations, but Dr. Ross' practice has also in-spired young professionals like Samantha Jefferies to pursue career inhealthcare. After working her way through college as an administrative asso-ciate for Dr. Ross, she earned her graduate degree and now serves as CEO ofthe management and billing company for Ross Medical and other practices.

“I assess doctors by one simple and natural test,” she says. “I ask myself, ‘WouldI be willing to have that doctor treat my 12-year-old son?’ I am proud to say thatI am privileged to work with doctors at Ross Medical whom I would trust implicitlyto give the highest quality care to my son and every patient they see.”

Ross Medical Associates doctors treat every member of the family. If you’dlike to get to know Ross Medical, there is ample opportunity. Whether or notyou’re a current patient, they offer free sports physicals for children all year;and this holiday season if you bring a new toy (valued at $10 or more) forcharity into any of their Ross Medical locations, you will recieve up to $20off your visit. When you decide that the family office approach is right foryou and your family, Ross Medical accepts most insurance plans. Walk-inswelcome. Find out more by visiting www.rossmedical.net.

Bodywork Improves Quality of LifeAlmost 35 million Americans are age 65 or older, and about 2,000 more reach this age every day.As the U.S. demographic shifts to an older popu-lation, it's important to find ways of helping ourelders maintain their health and vitality. Massagefor seniors is gaining importance as an alterna-tive therapy to increase quality of life, and manymassage therapists are getting special training tobetter serve this growing population.

Seniors' Special Needs While similar in technique to other forms of mas-sage, geriatric massage considers the specialneeds of the elderly. The specialty trained prac-titioner knows about positioning for greatestcomfort and will often have the client rest in the same position for the entire massage.Mobility challenges may dictate the massage be done in a bed or wheelchair. The thera-pistmay also work both sides of the body at the same time to enhance body awareness,or only work hands and feet, if the client prefers. Sessions may be limited to 30 to 45 min-

The geriatric massage therapist is aware of healthissues associated with aging and how to safelywork with this type of client and with associatedphysicians. Consequently, the practitioner is ableto individualize the massage service based on the

client's health, mobility, and comfort level.

Benefits of Geriatric MassageA recent study conducted at the Weaver'sTale Retreat Center in Oregon looked at theeffects of massage for elderly clients. Theresults of the two-year study showed thatparticipants experienced a decrease inbreathing rate of 50 percent and an im-provement in range of motion, posture, body awareness, skin color, and muscletone. Furthermore, it is well documentedthat caring touch benefits emotional well-being in seniors -- a population at greaterrisk of suffering from depression.

Massage therapy can add to the quality of a se-nior's life, both physically and emotionally. Con-sider booking a session for someone you love, andmake a difference in their life.

It’s not like they need another shout-out with their HUGE following andthousands of devoted customers, but I have to give them credit where it’sdue! One of their most popular locations is in Laguna Niguel, owned byPhil and Gina Wendt. Inspired by the passionate quest for a healthy, alter-native beverage option, they followed in the footsteps of founders Steveand Alexis Schulze and opened their own franchise.

Famous for their 1,2,3, or 5 day bottled cleanses and fresh, pressed-on-the-spot juices or raw, unprocessed fruit smoothies, Nekter is the go-toplace to sip on something delicious that actually makes you look and feelhealthier. They even somehow manage to put green vegetables in theirmixes. “We guaranteeyou won’t taste thoseleafy greens, but you’llfeel the amazing ef-fects of them!” saysGina. And with every-one looking and feel-ing so good, mostpeople just can’t stopthe sip. “Once people experience the boost of health, they are back inevery day. Sometimes twice a day!” she adds.

If you’re new to juicing, they recommend starting with a Sublime, ToxinFlush or Popeye’s Acai Smoothie.

If you're in an MA-PD, you can either 1) submit a disenrollment request to yourMA-PD plan and then enroll in a Part D plan, or 2) enroll in a Part D plan first, which then automatically dis-enrolls you from your MA-PD.

You can only enroll into one Part D plan during your SEP, and your SEP is onlyavailable during the MADP, January 1 - February 14 disenrollment period. Yourenrollment into your new Part D plan is effective the first of the following month.

At this point you can add a Medicare Supplemental plan (sometimes referred toas a Medi-gap plan). These plans fill in the “gaps” of original Medicare. To geton one of these plans there is very lenient underwriting. Private insurance com-panies ask very few health questions, and if you don’t have End Stage Renal dis-ease, haven’t been in the hospital in the last 90 days as an in-patient, and haven’tbeen told by your doctor that you need major surgery performed in the next 2years (such as heart & circulatory, cancer, organ or jointreplacement) and it has yet to be done, then you’relooking good for being accepted.

For most people, fear of the unknown is what stops them from chasing their dreams, especially when it comes to owning a business. You could have the strongest entre-preneurial spirit but not know where to start. That’s where Beth Freemen with PerfectMatch Franchise Services can help.

If you’re thinking dating website- you’re wrong, but she does help you find the 'one' (busi-ness- that is)! “The comment I hear most from people is, ‘I have never met someone who doeswhat you do.” My clients and I take the time to discuss their financial, personal and businessgoals, and I take that information into account as I research franchise options that will be agood fit for those goals,” says Beth. “Part of my job as an advisor is to remind my clients thatwhile we are preparing to meet the requirements of the franchisor, that they are also askingthe right questions to ensure the franchise is the right for them,” she adds.

But why hire a consultant to help you find the right business for you? Beth knows the insiderpros and cons that accompany the different franchises. “While many companies will rushyou through the franchise selection process, I make sure my clients take the time to do theirdue diligence. This is a life changing decision- it should be as informed and calculated aspossible,” Beth comments.

Letting someone help you find the right business isn’t just convenient- it’s smart. Beth startsthe process off by offering you a complimentary phone consultation, a business presenta-tion, and ultimately a coordination service with potential franchisors that have made yourlist. Because she is so devoted to serving her clients, Beth’s clients remark that without herservices, they wouldn’t have the ability to make such an informed decision. Beth is also ableto help current business owners franchise their companies, or assist with the buying andselling of companies.

But what inspired her to create Perfect Match Franchise Services? “Becoming business own-ers has always been part of our plan. My husband and I have been researching franchiseopportunities for many years, and we attended a couple of Discovery Days presented bythose companies that interested us. However, the consistent moves required of a MarineCorps family never allowed us to move forward. Now that we have landed in Southern Cal-ifornia and are towards the end of a military career, I chose to once again look into our busi-ness options. When my research turned up this wonderful opportunity, I left my career tofollow my dreams of being a business owner and to open Perfect Match Franchise Services. It is a great fit for my experience and skills, and I know I would have used the services of anadvisor all those years ago during my initial research. I am an advocate of small businessand what it brings to our community and economy. I am very involved and active in the com-munity and I couldn’t be happier with helping people find the perfect fit for them.”

When you meet Beth in person, you’ll feel confident and in capable hands right away. Hermix of approachable but direct demeanor lets you know she isn’t afraid to go out of her wayand get the results you need. Because she is always current or ahead of the market trends,Beth learns of opportunities to share with her clients that are new to the market and havegreat growth potential. Since she considers your time invaluable, shehas a remarkable reputation for taking the time needed to fully un-derstand what sort of business is right for you.

If owning a franchise, creating one or even preparing for future own-ership is of interest to you, call Beth right away. She is excited to helpfind the perfect match for you!

It’s inevitable that ultimately most, if not all of us will need somekind of home-care as we get older. Some of us have alreadyhad the unfortunate task ofdealing with this issue in re-gards to a loved one, and

some are still searching for theright company while time isquickly running out.

The problem with choosing thebest home care for you or yourloved one is that you want some-one who will be like a family mem-ber - someone you can really becomfortable with - but at a costyou can afford. Many high-pricedhome care companies sound like agreat option, but at the end of the day they are unaffordable.

Started 13 years ago by Li Cutler, a registered nurse with a deeppassion for helping others in their time of need,PrimeCare QualityHome Care was created specifically to fill this niche in the homecare industry. Throughout the years, they have helped many fami-lies through the stressful and overwhelming process that is homecare. PrimeCare is currently owned and operated by Li’s son AlexTsai, a solider who returned home from his first tour of duty in Iraqto discover that his mother had been diagnosed with metastaticgastric adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer. Alex was ableto see her through her initial surgery before he was then deployedto Kosovo. After his mother passed away, Alex was discharged fromthe military and returned home to run the family business. Hewanted to continue to grow his mother’s legacy with the intentionof providing low-cost care with top-quality, family-oriented service.

From Tragedy to Triumph:PrimeCare Quality Home Care

Since its inception, PrimeCare has grown entirely on word-of-mouth referrals - something virtually unheard of intoday’s challenging economic climate. Client after client hasremarked that PrimeCare is unlike any other home carebusiness, and that they step up to the plate in every way.

Since Alex has taken over the helm, the business is moresuccessful than ever. Rooted in the traditional, personal-

ized realm of what the true meaning of home care is and mixed withnew, modern updates has continued to make,PrimeCare the onlychoice for your needs.

“What really sets us apart from the other companies is we don’t justsend someone over to care for you or your loved one,” says Alex.“We try our best to match our clients with our caregivers, so every-one feels comfortable and secure. You should feel like a friend ishelping you, not a stranger. We also put our potential staff througha tough interview process to ensure we are hiring only the best. Mymother instilled these qualities in the business and I believe that iswhy we have had so much success.

When choosing a home-care provider, care and compassion shouldbe at the top of the list. When Alex’s mother created PrimeCare, she

opened with the intention that theorganization would be on-call 24/7,no matter what. That’s why Prime-Care is so amazing, they under-stand that emergencies canhappen in the middle of the nightand without warning. Their all-ac-cess number can be reached anytime, and their services are alwaysavailable to you. PrimeCare cur-rently services Orange County, LosAngeles County, Riverside Countyand the Inland Empire.

PrimeCare’s past clients, like DougShilling of Shilling Construction, speak to the success of the com-pany to date.

“The final few months of our mother’s life was made much morepleasant by your company’s presence,” he says. “We would have hada much more difficult time in dealing with the constant care neededhad your services not been available. It was wonderful to know thatwe did not have to worry about her care, knowing that we could com-pletely trust that she was well cared for. We recommend your Prime-Care without reservation to anyone needing care for a loved one.”

1. How did you perfect the lasertreatment for fungal nails?Ivar Roth, DPM: After performing thou-sands of laser fungal toenail treatments, Ideveloped and refined a proprietary proto-col coupled with the newest second gen-eration FDA approved laser. The new laserwith its digital readouts allows me to tellprecisely how much energy is required tokill the fungus. With this information, I cal-culate a specific customized laser treatment tailored to each patient. This patient specifictreatment means that no two patients are given the same laser treatment. In addition, I in-vented a new way to get rid of the fungal infection in the toenails. Before your lasertreatment, I will perform Maximum Nail Reduction (MNR) which removes at least 80% f your fungus in a single office visit. This exclusive protocol is so effective that I appliedfor a patent and it is currently only available at my office. The initial treatment fee includes asecond treatment session in order to ensure your success.

2) What is the cost for laser toenailtreatment?IR: The treatments are broken downinto two easy to understand compo-nents. The first is the examinationand nail treatment which may be cov-ered by insurance. The second part isthe actual laser treatment which isnot covered. A one-time examinationfee of $500 is charged during the first

session which covers both the fee for the initial examination as well as the follow-up officevisit. There is a separate laser fee of $70 for each toe which is also paid upfront and coverstwo laser treatments. For example, treating one toe would be $570; however if all ten toe-nails are treated, the charge would be $1200. For severe infections, a third laser treatmentmay be necessary. Exclusive anti-fungal products are sold separately. You are not forced totreat all your nails as may be mandatory at other offices.

3) Are there any other problemsassociated with fungal toenailinfections?IR: Dry, scaly skin, cracked heelsor thick calluses are commonproblems directly associated withinfected toe nails. Dr. Roth has de-veloped a unique bedtime skintreatment regimen to eliminate

any fungus on your skin while you comfortably sleep. Simply apply Dr. Roth's specially for-mulated "Bedtime Skin Rejuvenation" gel and foot wrap before you climb into bed. Resultswill knock your socks off!
