Dear Neighbors,

If you are new to Snapshot, welcome! This little gem is a monthly publication. It is jam packed with articles of interest and products and services that are provided by businesses in, or local to, Vancouver and will, I hope be-come an invaluable reference point for you.

Spring has sprung and April showers have brought May flowers. Spring is a season of new beginnings and fresh starts. It evokes thoughts of renewal and hope for a better future.

I don’t know what this past year has been like for you. Perhaps you feel like shriveled steel magnolia flowers - haunted by dreams and hopes that once bloomed bright with promise, only to wilt in regret and disappointment.

With all the economic downfalls, we forget what really matters to us most, our family, friends and community. I know it can be hard but we have to keep our chins up and be positive. Now is the time to choose what you really love... so think about it and put your plan into action... listen to your heart and do what is right for you!

If you had a difficult time this past year and got through it, please share how you have overcome your hardship and flourished.

Spring is a reminder of the gift of opportunity to begin life anew. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.

To new beginnings,

Shiela Strubel

Dream WeddingsBy Diane Palmer

Barefoot on the Beach... Shoestring BudgetShoestring weddings, can be fun and creative! Just remember that, when you are being pressured by sales people to have a traditional wedding with all the bells and whistles and the price tag. Don’t let your budget hinder your creativity.

PLANNING A WEDDING

Wedding album, videos and a care-fully preserved gown – your wedding mementoes are meant to be precious reminders of your special day. But you may find yourself cringing with shame when you look at your album years down the road if you choose trendy over traditional style for the look of your wedding.

It’s easy to tell the difference between a look that’s trendy and a more classic style. Think of the bell bottoms and love beads from the ‘70s and big hair and “Dynasty” style gowns of the ‘80s – looks that were “hot” at one time, but that years later elicit an eye-roll and a “what was I thinking” attitude from women who wore them.

Now consider the elegance, grace and demure femininity of icons like Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn. Their style was classic and timeless – and one that today’s smart bride mimics to ensure she’ll love the look of her wedding as much in 20 years as she does the day she walks down the aisle.

Today’s bride knows that choosing fabrics, silhouettes and accessories borrowed from the classic era – the 1940s through the 1960s – will give her wedding and gown timeless appeal. No dated looks from easy-to-identify fashion fads for her. The classic look also plays well with the growing trend to achieve less with more by accenting the basics with luxurious finishing touches.

Here’s how to achieve a classic look for your spring wedding.

The Dress Avoid large, modern swags of fabrics in favor of silhouettes that emphasize an hourglass figure. Nipped-in waists, or waistlines defined with belts and sashes, often in a color that slightly contrasts with the dress, create an elegant, eternal style. You can draw your classic style from the ‘40s, ‘50s and even ‘60s.

Designers offer charming gowns that evoke the look of 1950s prom dresses with fitted bodices and full skirts in tulle, lace and applique. For a 1960s look, a shorter, sophisticated frock with a gathered waist and narrow skirt will be reminiscent of the classic ‘60s cocktail dress.

The Accessories A veil is essential for classic bridal style, and birdcage veils with large netting that falls at cheekbone length epitomize the look. These simple veils frame the bride’s glowing face and highlight special jewelry. Lady-like wrist-length gloves are the perfect complement to vintage bridal looks.

The classic bridal look is a perfect match with a simple and elegant pair of pearl stud earrings and a lustrous 16-inch strand of cultured pearls around the bride’s neck. Pearls have long been associated with the essence of sophisticated womanhood in American pop cul-

ture. “Pearls are considered a symbol of purity, making them the perfect fit with a bride’s white dress.”

The Look Tie a classic dress and accessories together with a polished hairstyle such as a bun or chignon and keep makeup understated. Dark brown or black eyeliner extended slightly past the end of the eyelid, a touch of black mascara and a shade of red lipstick perfectly matched to the bride’s complexion are all that’s necessary to complete the perfect, classic Hollywood face.Courtesy of ARAcontent

Hello, I am your Wedding Fairy Godmother. I worked as a wedding coordinator for years, before that I was in bridal fashion as a fashion designer. If you have any wedding related questions please email Dear Fairy Godmother at [email protected]. Your answer will be in the next issue and we will email you within 72 hours.

Wedding Advice and FAQ’s

As you are pouring over magazines, books, browsing through the latest trends and colors, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and remember that little girl once you were, dressing up as a bride, wearing perhaps a white sheet as your train, gathered wild flowers that transformed into glorious bouquet in your imagination. Stay in touch with that little girl... Wedding day is about the only day you have carte blanche to be the fairy tail princess... even if your dress was not delivered by a couple of cartoon blue birds, you will look ethereal in it... and your knight will see you the first time, like never ever before...

Don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild... however, it is good to have a plan. So, start with a spiral book and start writing, clipping, gluing... Since we are now adults, one thing dims the light of our fairy tale sometimes... BUDGET. But have no fear... budget is our long term friend! It may feel at times, that it gets in our way, but trust on the long run... many seemingly happy planning has gone sour, as the unexpected bills started coming in, and the last thing you want is to start your new life in the red, because of the wedding expenses. Now on to the fun stuff! I would suggest first decide on your theme... no, I am not talking “pirate - wedding” or anything like that... theme can be as subtle as a pattern, repeated over and over ... or a symbol... this should reflect the both of you or some how symbolize your future life to-gether... are you two sports fans, hikers, gardeners or enjoy cooking together? Think of things that will describe you as a couple and you have a list of ideas for your theme...

Next step is seek out the people you trust and who are willing to help you. It is important that you delegate. Unless you can afford a wedding coordinator, but if you

are a do it yourself bride, you will need help. Only a few things can be done just before the wedding, and you don’t want to stress yourself out over trying to do it all.

Your list of things to be done should have a time line, start date, date to be completed and a check box for completed items. Then add about 50% more time to each chore and you will be right on time — trust me on this one. Have as much as possible done in advance! When you pick your color or theme, at the time of the set up, it may look as “too much” do not worry about that, by the time your guests are in the picture, the theme or colours will be much more subtle.

Here are a few ideas for decorating on a budget...If you need to hide something consider renting large plants or small decorative trees in pots from a local nursery. They are pleasant to look at and could cover up unsightly objects or imperfections... often nurseries are willing to deliver and pick up after the ceremony.

Curly willows makes a very dramatic addition to a few branches and flowers in table centerpieces for a few dollars you could buy a big bunch at craft warehouses such as Michael’s. If you decide to do this, make sure you have enough weight in the bottom of the center-pieces, to avoid them from tipping over.

If you have anybody with sewing skills in your family, you could purchase inexpensive fabric and just have a contrasting color runner or a large napkin size doyley in the center of each table.

PLANNING A WEDDING

Giving Your Wedding and Reception a “Designer – Look”

If your venue allows, not many things make as much impact as a few flickering candles. They are pure ro-mance! However, many places worry about fire hazard, in that case you could still use battery operated flame less candles.

If you have your heart set on fresh flowers, this time of year tulips and hydrangeas are fairly inexpensive and they make lovely arrangements. You save a few dollars if you gather nice branches of trees with leaves on or use inexpensive fillers such as baby breaths and just a few blooms in each center pieces.

Make sure that you and the bridal party’s bouquets and the centerpieces are in harmony.

If you are “naturalist” polished pebbles in glass dishes with a few floating candles and just a few flowers on each table would make an impact.

Don’t be afraid to let your imagination go wild... and don’t let anybody tell you what your wedding “should” or “should not” be like... it is the bride’s and groom’s day, let your personalities shine throughout the day!

Engaged couples long for a wedding day that will be unique and memorable, but in these tough economic times many are becoming more cautious about how they plan and spend their budget.

According to The Wedding Report, a research company that tracks wedding spending in the United States, the average cost of a wedding in 2008 was $21,814. That is a 24 percent decline over the 2007 average of $28,704. This decline doesn’t mean you can’t have exactly what you want on your big day to create your dream wedding.

“You can rent almost anything you need to make your wedding match your vision,” says Christine Wehrman, executive vice president and chief executive officer of the American Rental Association (ARA), the global trade association for the rental industry. “By renting items for your wedding, you have access to products that may have otherwise been too expensive in large quantities. You can get exactly what you want at a price that meets your budget.”

Choose linens that match your wedding colors, or go for classic white to offset the color of your centerpieces. Linens can be rented in a variety of colors and textiles, and add a touch of elegance to every space. Create drama without adding cost by creating a monochromatic design for your table.

Centerpieces can be elegant or casual, depending on your style. Mix tall and short clear vases to add depth to your table and save money on large floral arrangements. Or choose a variety of candleholders to create a vintage-inspired look and a romantic, low-light atmosphere.

Planning an outdoor wedding? Tents can transform any setting into striking surroundings for your big day. Large tents and elegant canopies come in a variety of

S t r e t c h Y o u r Wedding Budget by Renting

colors and styles. Many come with cathedral ceilings, windows or even clear tops– allowing guests to catch a glimpse of a dramatic sunset or a sparkling night sky.

You can rely on the expertise of your ARA member rental store professionals before you book your venue. They can help you assess the potential site for things like power accessibility, ground water issues or overhead power lines that may interfere with your vision of a tall tent, among other situations.

The wonderful experience and memories of your wedding day will be yours to own forever. And every-thing else? Well, that you can rent! To find your local ARA member rental store, visit www.RentalHQ.com, the world’s largest rental store locator. You can search by geographic location and by the specific type of equipment you are looking to rent. Courtesy of ARAcontent

ROSIE’S RAVES

mother’s are the very best Mother’s Day is the one day in the year that’s set aside to say “Thanks Mom for all you do.” Some of us have this holiday perfected – flowers every year or a box of chocolates, a card – and many celebrate by taking Mom out to dinner. Whatever we do, we want her to know how much we love her and we want her to feel special and appreciated – at least for one day out of the year!

more meaning... less costSometimes we want to give Mom something really special, something that says we gave it some thought, a gift that lasts and won’t be eaten and forgotten or wilted and thrown away. If money is no object, the sky’s the limit. I’m talking to those of you who have a limited budget but a burning desire to get that perfect gift for Mom.

How To Find a LawyerBy Scott E. Nielson, J.D.Attorney at Law

In last month’s column, we explored a few examples when you might need to call a lawyer. But this leads naturally to the next question: How do I find the right lawyer?

Ironically, we have more lawyers than ever before in history but most people don’t seem to know a lawyer. Where to begin? Some seemingly obvious places usually aren’t very helpful, with pages of Yellow Pages listings or a website search. These will give you long lists of lawyers, but how do you know which is right for you?

As with the medical profession, most lawyers specialize as they gain experience. The trick is to find the right lawyer with the right specialty and the right experience for you. Luckily, there are good ways to make the right match:

1. The Bar Association. Many people find the state or local bar associations helpful in finding lawyers experienced in the specialty they need. Search the website of your local county bar association or your state bar association. Most have referral services that will give you names of lawyers who can help you. Call several; a good lawyer will provide you with his or her background and experience so you can find someone appropriate for your situation.

2. Internet Referrals. There are several very good websites that can help you find the right lawyer. You can briefly describe your situation and your location and the websites will then refer you to lawyers’ profiles that describe their experience and specialties. With this method, you can research several lawyers to decide who can help you.

3. Business Associates and Friends. This time-honored method often can be your best effort. Chances are good that someone you know has already faced your situation or one similar to it. If you trust your busi-ness associate or friend, you can probably trust his or her recommen-dation - If he or she liked the job that lawyer did. On the other hand, if your friend didn’t like her lawyer, you might ask for the name of the “other” lawyer. A client once found me because I had once represented the opponent of her friend!

Don’t miss next month’s column. We’ll discuss how to interview your potential lawyer and which questions to ask.

Cutting costs, pinching pennies, shopping smarter -- more and more people are reacting to the current economic crisis by changing how and where they spend money. With more than 84 million people having broadband Internet access at home, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, a few mouse clicks can easily benefit your wallet.

Here are just a few ways that consumers can use the Internet to take some pressure off their pocketbooks.

Check online for coupons and promotional codes. In lieu of eating out frequently, many people are doing more grocery shopping and cooking at home. Many major grocery stores post coupons, offers and other promo-tions online that can easily lead to increased savings in a frac-tion of the time it takes to clip coupons in the traditional sense. Likewise, many online retailers circulate “promo codes” that can be redeemed at checkout for addi-tional savings. Before completing an online purchase checkout, do a quick Internet search. Visit sites like www.

RetailMeNot.com or www.Coupon-Cabin.com to save.

Shop around for insurance quotes. Insurance, whether for your car, home, health or business is something most people cannot go without. However, many people never think to shop around for a better insurance quote because they see insurance as an expense that isn’t negotiable, or they think they’re stuck in their current policy until it runs out. This is simply not the case. People can switch at any point in their policy, without penalty, and can often find a better deal by shopping around. Better yet, people can use quote-shopping sites, such as www.NetQuote.com, and receive insurance quotes from multiple interested agents without the hassle of filling out multiple requests. It can be a simple way to greatly reduce the amount people pay for insurance. After all, if you have to pay for it anyway, you may as well get the best deal you can.

Save on gas by mapping out travel routes. Instead of taking the same route to work, friends’ houses or places of interest, consid-

er mapping out a more cost-effec-tive route by using online mapping services. The less time you spend driving from point A to point B, the less you’ll have to spend on gas. Web sites such as www.Mapquest.com or GoogleMaps can change the way you travel and how much it costs to get there. You might find a time-saving shortcut that you never knew existed.

Don’t waste money on the wrong products – read re-views first. Consider checking out www.Epinions.com or www.ConsumerSearch.com. If the buzz indicates that a particular product is not worth the money – or that a similar product does the same thing for less – reconsider the pur-chase and look into other options.

People can get very creative when it comes to shaving a few pennies off their expenses. Before resorting to dramatic, cumbersome methods of saving money, explore the options above and other innovative ways the Web can be a tool for reducing your financial burden. Courtesy of ARAcontent

My dad is a “Dynamite Dad” because he spends a lot of time playing and taking me to do fun things. He colors with me in our playroom. He takes me to the book store and the park. My dad helps me ride my bike. We tackle each other and he throws me way high in the air!. He also picks me up special treats. My favorite thing about my dad is when he sets up movie night and we camp out in the family room. My dad is the very best!

My dad is a “Dynamite Dad” because he plays flying wings with me, throwing me high in the air. I like how he slides me on the floor with my socks on. My dad makes the best pancakes. He also surprises me with treats. I like it when we do group hugs, with daddy, mommy and sister. My daddy loves me so, so, so, so much! It’s fun when we give high fives and skin. I love my daddy!

YOUR BUSINESS, YOUR PASSION

Are you wondering what you’re going to do to get more leads for your business? Were you one of the lucky ones able to rely solely on referrals and your centers of net-working to sustain before the economic crunch, but the phones aren’t ringing now? If you answered yes, you probably need to look at your marketing approach and consider bringing it back to basics.

As you know and are probably personally very aware, we are no longer in the ‘golden age’ of sales where you simply had to make a few calls and fill up the dinner calendar to sustain a viable revenue stream. Gone are the days of thinking customers will come flocking in for 15% off or for a free goodie, and treating a potential client like they are just the next one in line. It’s time to get back to basics. By this I mean; get back to the roots of sales and marketing, get back to building the relation-ship with the person. You’re going to find much more success and retain those valuable clients and customers if you remember to plant the seeds now, they will grow into a network that will pay off.

Definition: “Relationship marketing is a form of marketing… which emphasizes customer re-tention and satisfaction, rather than a dominant focus on ‘point of sale’ transactions.

Relationship marketing differs from other forms of marketing in that it recognizes the long term value to the firm of keeping customers, as opposed to direct or “Intrusion” marketing, which focuses upon acquisition of new clients by targeting majority demographics based upon prospective client lists.” - wikipedia.org

We are flooded, more now than ever, with advertisements, sales calls, direct mail, internet ads, viral campaigns, you name it, and your potential customer wants something

different, they want a relationship and someone they can trust. I’ve compiled a list of relationship marketing tips I recommend using to turn the potential customer into a paying customer.

Don’t focus on quantityhowever focus on quality.

I know you’ve heard this a thousand times, but it’s honestly true. For example, if you have a booth at a trade show, instead of working desperately hard to get as many leads as possible, instead I suggest you focus on talking to the person. Evaluate their potential as a good customer, and get to know them.

Listen.

Put away your sales speech for a minute, and listen. This doesn’t mean you aren’t supposed to talk, however it does mean you’re supposed to ask questions and listen. Ask the person about their family, work, hobbies, etc. With this information, you’re likely to find a common interest which you will be able to speak intelligently on, therefore building the relationship is that much easier.

Step back and look in.

It’s so easy to get caught up in our little sales world and forget what it’s like to be the regular person looking in. Take a moment to see what it’s like from their point of view. Does it look good? Would you buy from you? Try to remember what it was like before you knew what you know, and remember all the questions you had at first. Remember we are all just people, not too complicated, and it’s way to easy to over complicate with a sales pitch.

Advertising is just part of the equation.

If you advertise in any form of media, whether it’s print, TV, radio, internet, remember, that’s only the first step. The next part is to make the personal contact. If you can not personally contact the person to whom you are advertising, unless you are Geico or Coca-Cola, most likely it will fall on deaf ears. Like I said before, and think about you as well, we are all overwhelmed with advertising. Now, if I see an ad on

a bus for a dentist, and then that dentist has a booth at the local kids fair and I meet him in person, that is a great way to build the relation-ship and the potential sale.

Relationship marketing is just a way to look at your efforts to attract and retain customers, and you will get what you are focusing on. If you focus on relationship and trust, you will get that kind of customer, and that is a recipe for a strong base of returning business that will not only love you, but also refer you to everyone they know.

If you’ve got a hobby, or even just a vision, it doesn’t take much to turn your dream into an online business that can provide extra income or even a backup plan in the event of a job loss.

When Kim Kardashian, one of the most stylish celebrities in Hollywood, started ShoeDazzle.com, she turned to LegalZoom.com to help her take her passion for fashion and turn it into a thriving online business. Some of the most im-portant steps to turning your own passion into starting your business include:

Find your passion first. Needless to say, passion is not the only thing you need to be successful in starting a business. You will also need lots of motivation and patience. But passion is essential as it will help you stay focused and keep moving without giving up easily.

Make sure there is a demand for the business. Do research to determine the de-

mand for products or services from comparable businesses. You will find it helpful to see how quickly related businesses have been able to grow.

Learn from others. Check with similar companies and speak to other professionals who have experience in the industry. Most entrepreneurs are open to sharing their experiences and advice with those who won’t directly compete with them. This is a crucial initial step in determining your own likelihood of success.

Lawns and gardens that are eye-catching have harmo-nious colorful plants in bloom and dramatic foliage varieties patterned in a way that appeals to the senses.

Unifying blooming and foliage plants in gardens has become a popular trend because it allows homeown-ers to think outside the box of traditional flower beds. From bold plant selection contrasts to color continuity, understanding bloom and foliage combinations will lead to an alluring escape in any backyard.

Ambiance MattersFoliage is all about leaf shape, vein coloration, outlines and textures. Some foliage selections are tall and dramatic others are soft, and petite. Arrangements often focus on creating a mood, drawing the eye outward or upward and creating dimension.

The blue-green leaves of Heucherella ‘Tapestry’ are ac-cented with deep-red veins which complement dark foliage plants such as the deep purple of Heuchera ‘Plum Royale.’ These two plants from Terra Nova Nurseries work well together to infuse drama and fullness to beds or containers.

Two other garden-worthy options from the growers of Garden Splendor varieties include Sedum ‘Angelina’ with evergreen needle-like, yellow foliage that makes a stun-ning ground cover or container plant and Sorbaria ‘Sem’ boasting a spectacular chartreuse leaf accented with softer bronze-red young tips that turn green in summer.

Color CongealsWhen planning the colors for a landscape, especially spring or summer gardens, it is wise to think in terms of diversity. When placed together, flowering blooms in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes creates a medley with enticing appearance. Echinacea ‘Pink Poodle’ and Echinacea ‘Mac ‘n’ Cheese’ will stop garden visitors in their tracks with a bold and beautiful surprise. The

names alone are enough to draw attention. The alternating-stripe blooms of Phlox ‘Peppermint Twist’ are a stunning choice for beds, borders and mass plantings. True to its name, pink and white blooms appear as if peppermint candy atop this compact grower. The Garden Splendor brand horticulturists say it is a mainstay of summer garden color.

Following the home-gardener trend of developing a collection or menagerie of color in the landscape, the Terra Nova Nurseries team introduced Echinacea ‘Tomato Soup,’ a coneflower with tomato-red blooms that can grow up to 3 feet tall. It follows Echinacea ‘Tiki Torch,’ now well known for its broad florets and burnished-copper seed cones. When creating beds, borders, containers, and other gardens, blooming color and attractive foliage will unify the areas by their sheer visual appeal. Learn more about these plants and gardening tips at www.terranovanurseries.com and www.gardensplendor.com.

Dreaming of traveling to your favorite tropical destina-tion? Are you, like many, skipping your vacation due to the current economic recession? Don’t worry. Creative homeowners are bringing the idea of travel into their home by incorporating exotic décor that provides the feeling of a travel retreat.

Tips for achieving today’s most popular decor trend:

Incorporate Exotic Color Schemes - Many tropical destinations decorate with blues because it represents the ocean, tans to represent the sandy beaches, and shades of pink and green to represent the vivid plant life. Add splashes of these colors to your room and you’ll find it transformed almost instantly.

Take a Scent Getaway - Febreze’s new Destinations Collection (www.febreze.com) allows homeowners to

give their house the essence of a tropical vacation through three great scents: Hawaiian Aloha, Brazilian Carnival and Moroccan Bazaar. Create your own temporary getaway at home with an authentic scent experience.

Accessorize For an Authentic Feel - Pull out that blanket you bought in Mexico or the vase you purchased on your last cruise. Then go shopping at your favorite home décor store and match items around a common theme. Adding a throw and a new pillow is a simple way to transform your couch or chair. Paintings of the beach or a beautiful sunset also add to the feeling of the tropics.

“It is with deep sadness that I tell you that on Friday, April 17th, Satsang Yoga closed its doors. This facility has become a special place to many and it saddens me that this is its fate after all the commitment, dedication, hard work and effort put forth by everyone who birthed this studio. This place was definitely a labor of love. It was my vision to see Satsang Yoga change our community and even though it was short lived, I am pleased with the change it did make. There are a few yogic principles that I am affirming through this process that has helped me understand and surrender to what is. One is that nothing is permanent. We all know that life changes and flows like a river. We can’t control it and if we think we can, we are mistaken. Two is, in this process we have all learned something and grown somewhere. Many of you were new to yoga when you arrived at our wonderful oasis. Now look at you! Three is, in every circumstance in life there is a gift. We may not see it when it is happening but with time, healing and clarity the gift shines brightly in the end. I look back on all those Weekly Oms I wrote from my heart and they are lifelong lessons we can all learn something from.

Please know that I worked very hard to keep the studio open – most of you already know that. Extenuating circumstances, including the extended economic decline of our nation, have contributed to the abrupt ending of our wonderful Satsang Yoga. I will begin working out of the Vancouver Yoga Center at the beginning of May. I will be teaching classes Tues-day and Thursday mornings at 9:30 am and Monday evenings at 7:15 pm. We will begin prenatal yoga classes again but the days and times are undetermined yet. At this time, these will be the only classes available to previous Satsang members. I cannot guarantee that I will be able to offer more classes but that is my hope. Let me know if you are interested in other times and days by emailing [email protected].

Thank you for all the support, wisdom, love, insight and guidance you all have given me over the three years of being here. This journey has been a shared journey of growth, transformation and friendship on so many levels. To the new people who just joined our studio, please accept my personal apologies and I hope to see you at the Vancouver Yoga Center.” With Sincere Love and Gratitude,Dana Layon

Weekly OmI love this quote… “And the time came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom” – Anais Nin.

It means so much and can be translated in many dif-ferent ways. How many of you feel “tight in a bud”? Maybe you’re just waiting for the economy to turn around and THEN you can make a difference.

Or you’re waiting until your partner finishes their degree/career climb and THEN you can go for what you love and are passionate about. Maybe you should wait until your kids go off to college, THEN can have your turn. Or maybe you’re waiting to retire – after all that time working you will DEFINITELY do what you love because THEN it will be you’re time...

Guess what? NOW is your time to blossom. Life is circumstance. We are our life. There’s no “waiting in line” to get where we want to go. The time is NOW! Every life experience that we are having we are meant to have so we can ask the questions: How can I serve, how can I grow, what can I celebrate?

Our experiences may not always be gift wrapped and then handed to us on a silver platter. In fact, most of the time, our most challenging and difficult experiences offer us the highest growth, most abundance and the most pristine beauty. They usually offer us a chance to see ourselves as we truly are. Most often they offer us the opportunity to notice those angels around us that

have been here all along, just waiting on the sidelines to make their appearance.Difficult and challenging times are not meant for us to sit around and wallow in our “victim mentality”. No one is ever a victim – we are just offered opportunities to choose to remain tight in a bud or blossom into what we are meant to be.

Ask yourself, what is happening in your life that could be misconstrued as challenging? Then ask yourself, did I ask for this situation or circumstance? Most likely you did… I know that’s hard to hear but it’s true! Then ask yourself, in this situation how can I serve, how can I grow and what can I celebrate?

Always, without a doubt, you will find something that urges you to blossom. Why stay tightly wound when you can bloom so beautifully? When you see springtime in all it’s glory – imagine those gorgeous flowers as part of you… because they are.

Mint Tea2014 Main Street, Vancouver, WAwww.MintTeaImports.com • (360) 699-4991

Mint Tea is located in a beautiful old craftsman home. It has a wonderful wrap-around covered patio with seating, over looking their organic garden and main street. They filled their two beds last year from community donations and they look forward to a second year of using fresh herbs in their bistro straight from the garden. If you have herb or tomato starts you would like to donate, they will gladly plant them.

From the moment you open the unique handled front door you enter a mystical sojourn, with sounds of Middle Eastern music, scents and vibrant color. Moroccan and Mediter-ranean decor and whimsical pieces are throughout this quaint bistro.

As you pass through the bistro and head to the counter to order from their flavorful menu or purchase items, you pass by colorful table clothed tables decorated with Capiz Shell Tea Light candle holders and cushions for seating. An array of imported in-cense, soaps, tapestries and baskets, decorative art, drums and instruments, Henna body art kits, glass art jewelry and candles and reusable shopping bags will catch your eye.

Now that you have made it to the counter you can order from the ever changing menu. Most of the food is Moroccan and French vegetarian and/or vegan cuisine, but there

are meat dishes on the menu each day as well. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and on Sunday’s a brunch from 10am- 3pm. On the menu you will find baked goods, warm cereal, Noah’s bagel, Nancy’s honey yogurt with organic granola and fresh fruit, mint tea plate, baked egg dish, soup, salad, pasta daily specials and a couple items for the kids (pb&j and grilled cheese). Choose from organic teas, french press and drip coffee, healthy bottled beverages, micro-brew beer and local wine. They are committed to using local, sustaina-ble, organic ingredients and that commitment rewards you with decedent tastes.

I was in for lunch with a friend and ordered their Mint Tea Plate ($6.50) – Hummas (which was a nicely spiced garbanzo-based dip), rustic feta, olives, zaatar (a mixture of herbs and spices), pita quarters and the whim of the day was a light potato salad. I was pleasantly surprised at all the flavor... delish! And I have to tell you I ordered their mint hot tea and it was the best I had... a strong mint with a hint of sweetness. My friend had the pleasure of ordering one of their sandwiches with a side salad ($6.50), it looked pretty tasty. She companied her lunch with a bottled pear juice.

The owners, Abdul and Jenna were very nice and great to talk with. My visit was very refreshing and I actually plan to return with my daughter and friends shortly. If you’re in the neighborhood or want a change in atmosphere and flavor you’ll be delighted to try Mint Tea.

Exotic and Aromatic. Pronounced Viognier (vee-on-yay). It’s become popular in the last couple of years. After a winter of red wines, jump-start your spring with a bottle or two of Viognier. It’s the perfect way to get your palate ready for those lighter spring and summer foods.

For our wine club this month we are pairing Viognier with: a Brie-Style cheese, rice crackers, and red pepper humus. Salt and Pepper Shrimp with Mango and Sweet Chile Dipping Sauces, Seared Scallops on a bed of spring mixed lettuce and jalapeño bread. End with a Toasty Coconut Crème Brulée or a scoop of mango sorbet on pound cake with a sprinkle of coconut on top. Enjoy! Salut!
