Dear Neighbors,

Welcome to the first issue of Snapshot. This little gem will be a monthly publication. It will be jam packed with products and services that are provided by businesses in, or local to, Vancouver and will, I hope become an invaluable reference point for you.

We give our readers valuable savings. Read about local businesses, arts, cinema listings, sports, education, health care restaurant reviews, community news (where charities and nonprofit organizations can publicize local events for free) etc., Snapshot gives our readers a glimpse of what is going on and what our community has to offer.

When you contact one of the businesses that are advertising with us – please let them know you saw them in Snapshot. This is really im-portant. It will help ensure that they continue to bring you special offers or discounts.

Snapshot is completely independent – run by a resident for residents. It is truly local. The quality of our production and content will always be of highest standard.

Finally, if you own or work in a business of which Vancouver is part of your target market, then you should be advertising with us! Our rates are incredibly good and we

have some excellent packages for long term advertisers.

Give me a call and we can have a chat...

Best Wishes,

Shiela Strubel

YPLANNING A WEDDING

our first step in planning a shoestring wedding, is to figure out exactly what you want. Ask yourself these questions: Are you inviting many people? Are you a traditional sort of girl? Do you need or want lots of wedding presents?

Are you inviting many people? ... or is it just a small group of friends and family

Are you a traditional sort of girl?... or are you up for something different.

Do you need or want lots of wedding presents? This may sound spoiled, but if you and your partner are well set up, then do you really need a bunch of presents that you have no room for.

Start with your first answer.. if its just a small group, say 25 and under, then why not consider a small wedding chapel or city hall, and rent a room in a nice restaurant for your reception and skip the DJ’s, speeches and dancing. Book ahead of time, and pick something off of their menu... This alone will save a lot of money, and your guests will have enjoyed a nice meal with you. With the smaller numbers this can be nice and personal.

Second answer... if you are willing to part with tradition and start your own traditions, then start with the day... get married on a Friday night, or Saturday morning.

Purchase a nice gown, rather than a “bridal gown”, dress it up with a pretty headpiece or hat or veil... huge savings there. Having a reception on any other day from Saturday evening, will save you a lot.

Third answer... if you are pretty well set up, then why put the pressure on yourself for a big wedding and the expected gifts that you don’t have room for?

In this particular case, going bare foot on the beach of some exotic island for your wedding, might be your best choice! Your guests can be given a good package deal on a great holiday, see your wedding, and you tell them, that if they pay their way down there that is a great gift to you!. They wont’ need to spend hundreds on “bridesmaid dresses” or “wedding gifts” and you can wear that skimpy little dress and bare feet.. Think what you will save on shoes!

There is always a way around these expensive weddings. A lot of it is just simple emotional pressure brought on by the industry. There are many more great ideas out there, just do a bit of research, and learn from people who have managed a great wedding and memorable day on a shoestring budget... plan your shoestring wedding So go ahead and have that dream wedding!

PLANNING A WEDDING

6 PLEASE MENTION SNAPSHOT WHEN RESPONDING TO ADS

Hello, I am your Wedding Fairy Godmother. I worked as a wedding coordinator for years, before that I was in bridal fashion as a fashion designer.

Planning a wedding can be one of the biggest events and one of the most stressful in a person’s life. I am here to answer any questions you may have. Need an idea or want information, email all your wedding related questions to your Fairy Godmother at [email protected] by the 20th of each month and look for suggestions from Fairy Godmother in our next issue.

Having a wedding emergency ? No problem, mark your email “urgent” and I will get back to you shortly.

He asked... you said YES ! There were twinkles in your eyes - music playing in your head,

But just before you start rifling through Brides magazine, set a side some time with your fiancée and make plans not only for your wedding but also for your marriage.

What of your vision of your life together? What’s his? Do you need a prenuptial agreement?

It is no longer requested only by wealthy individuals, seeking to protect their estates or second marriages where parents are trying to protect their children’s inheritances. Today, many brides and grooms enter marriage with earned retirement benefits, 401K plans, IRAs, invested savings and property. Besides protecting your legal rights, prenuptial agreements are a good way to evaluate your financial situation before marriage and your belief about your future life together.

Wedding Advice and FAQ’s

When should a prenuptial agreement be drawn up?

Well in advance of the wedding, to allow time for careful consideration and for both of your lawyers to review the document. It should cover ownership of not only present property but future ownership and expected inheritances.

Don’t involve family members, unless the agreement directly pertains to them.

Focus on big issues - such as inheritances and real estate - and don’t sweat the small stuff like the DVD collection.

Be positive ! Prenuptial agreements are not precursors to divorce, but for planning your financial future together.

However, if you decide not to have a prenup, still this would be a good time to discuss whether you’ll pool in-comes or keep them separate. Collect financial statements from credit cards, banks, pension plans and student loans. Subtract debts from assets to determine your net worth.

What other documents will you need to get married?

Marriage License. Don’t leave this to the last minute. The State of Washington requires a 3 day waiting period. You and your fiancée could obtain it at the County Courthouse, in Vancouver, 1300 Franklin Street, during business hours. The fee is $62, cash. Credit card or checks are not accepted. The fee is nonrefundable.

You will both have to be 18 years of age or older, and have a photo ID. Applicants who are 17 years of age must be accompanied by one parent or legal guardian who can provide consent. Your Marriage License is valid for 60 days.

I suggest, since both of you have to be present, mark this occasion by planning a romantic lunch date after or go for cocktails.

Sincerely,

When it comes to giving a great wedding or bridal shower gift, it pays to put all your eggs - or gifts - in one basket. Gift baskets are not only simple to brainstorm, they are easy to put together and transport. Plus, you can fill gift baskets with items you know the newlyweds will use and match it to their lifestyles.

Here are some gift-basket ideas you can purchase or cre-ate yourself to match the personalities of the recipients.

For the BathroomFind a semi-large basket which will hold a bottle of wine, soap, bottles of bath salts, bubble bath and lotion upright. You can wrap the bottles in a hand towel and matching wash cloth to keep the bottles from clanking. Also try to match the scents of the products, and top the gift basket off with a matching candle.

In the Laundry RoomPurchase a laundry basket with comfortable handles and fill it with laundry detergent, softener and a filled change container for anyone who has to use a Laundromat. If you have space leftover, add some wooden hangers, an iron or ironing board.

Spicing up the KitchenAmericans are cooking more and more in their own kitchens thanks to a troubled economy, and every working kitchen needs a good set of spices. American Spice has a starter spice kit already assembled, or you can create your own, matching the tastes of the bride and groom.

If your friends already have an established spice collec-tion, check out the jams, salad dressings or barbeque sets which come in many different sizes and flavors.

Versatile & Personal Gift Baskets are Perfect for Newlyweds

Tuck in a few drying towels, a chef’s apron or hat, cooking utensils and a recipe box and your cook is set to create some amazing treats and meals.

Setting up the GarageAnyone with a vehicle can use a garage-themed auto care kit. Instead of using a basket, try a crate or nice wooden box. Start with jumper cables, and include all the handy tools necessary to do minor maintenance jobs -- paper hand towels, extra bottles of window washing fluid, transmission fluid and oil. A small tool kit also would be handy, complete with a lightweight hammer, screw drivers and a pair of pliers.

Bedroom BasicsThis basket can go in many directions, depending on how the recipient is related to you. For basic ideas, try an aromatherapy candle, a good novel, a set of high thread-count cotton sheets complete with pillow covers and a reading light. Courtesy of ARAcontent

My dad is a “Dynamite Dad” because he spends a lot of time playing and taking me to do fun things. He colors with me in our playroom. He takes me to the book store and the park. My dad helps me ride my bike. We tackle each other and he throws me way high in the air!. He also picks me up special treats. My favorite thing about my dad is when he sets up movie night and we camp out in the family room. My dad is the very best!

My dad is a “Dynamite Dad” because he plays flying wings with me, throwing me high in the air. I like how he slides me on the floor with my socks on. My dad makes the best pancakes. He also surprises me with treats. I like it when we do group hugs, with daddy, mommy and sister. My daddy loves me so so so so much! It’s fun when we give high fives and skin. I love my daddy!

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Health TipMost of us look for that perfect “cure all” to feeling good, maintaining optimal health and becoming our ideal physical body type. Since committing to a consistent yoga practice, I have heard many people, including myself say, “It’s not that my body is perfect, it’s just the way I look at it now. I FEEL better.”

The bottom line is yoga creates consciousness. We become conscious when we exercise, when we eat and when we relate to others. We are able to make better choices for our health when we are more conscious.

Here are some scientific facts about yoga. See if any of these pertain to you and how maybe adding a yoga prac-tice to your weekly regime may help you to find more balance, optimal health and vitality and inner peace.

A consistent yoga practice decreases blood pressure through better circulation and oxygenation of the body.

A slower pulse rate indicates that your heart is strong enough to pump more blood with fewer beats. Regularly practicing yoga provides a lower pulse rate.

Yoga improves blood circulation. By transporting nutri-ents and oxygen throughout your body, a consistent yoga practice provides healthier organs, skin, and brain.

Like the circulatory system, a lower respiratory rate indicates that the lungs are working more efficiently. Yoga decreases the respiratory rate through a combination of controlled breathing exercises and better fitness.

A combination of lower heart rate and improved oxygenation to the body (both benefits of yoga) results in higher cardiovascular endurance.

All this – in maybe three hours a week. Hmmmm…can you afford the time not to try yoga?

This is the time to make a positive change in YOUR LIFE! Forget about what other people are saying —YOU have a choice — it’s YOUR LIFE!

Getting In Touch With Your BodyMassage Profile: Lomi-LomiTranslated from the Hawaiian, lomi-lomi means “Mas-sage-Massage”. This style of massage is both vigorous and flowing, like ocean waves, and the focus is on connecting the whole body, rather than exclusively on massaging individual parts, although the therapist will certainly focus on whatever you need. Often lomi involves massage of two areas of the body simultaneously to support the goal of integration. Unlike traditional massage, where one area is undraped and massaged, then re-covered, in lomi, the room is kept very warm and the client’s body is minimally, yet modestly draped, as though the wearing a bikini, to allow the therapist to freely move about and massage the entire body, increasing your body’s neuromuscular communication from head to toe.

Lomi-lomi was traditionally practiced by the healers, or kahunas, in combination with herbal medicine, warmed stones, steams, and other modalities rather than in isolation as “just a massage”. Although rarely practiced today in “mainland” lomi, traditionally chanting and breath work have been a part of this style. Instead of feeling groggy after this massage, most recipients feel a delightful combination of relaxation and energy. As this massage uses more lubricant than traditional massage (coconut oil in most cases), it is advisable to wear clothes that don’t mind a little oil. Be prepared to enjoy!

We are fortunate to be able to offer you such advanced massages. Aarisa Smith, LMP is one of our newer staff members who specializes in the Lomi-Lomi, along with several other speciality massages. She is available Mon-day-Wednesday and Fridays from 2-9pm. Book your Lomi-Lomi Massage today!

FINANCES AND LEGAL

Do I Need A Lawyer?By Scott E. Nielson, J.D.Attorney at Law

Perhaps the most common question I get from people is “How do I find a good lawyer?” Although this is a good question (and will be the subject of next month’s column), there is a question that should be asked first. That question is: “Do I need a lawyer?”

You’ll find no shortage of Internet websites that advertise: “Avoid high legal fees and buy our forms!” In some simple situations, buying a simple form may work for you, if you are very familiar with the situation or transaction you face and you already know which form to buy. I think most of us would agree that those situations are not the norm in our lives.

So here are just a few of the most common situations where you might want a lawyer:

Real Estate. Very few realtors will recommend that you hire your own lawyer — after all, each realtor has lots of standard forms. These forms have been written by real estate lawyers, and in most cases will get the job done, if you are experienced in real estate and if there are no complications and if there are no unusual circumstances. That’s a lot of ifs!

Disputes. If you find yourself on the wrong side of a process server, you’ll definitely need a lawyer. The other side already has one! But a lawyer can also avoid a lawsuit during a brewing dispute. Settling disputes to both sides’ satisfaction is as much a lawyer’s profession as is courtroom work.

Contracts. When dealing in a high-cost situation, the other party often will present you with their “standard” contract. But the terms of any contract are open for negotiations. I remind my clients that, unless their name is “standard”, don't automatically sign such a contract. Modifying contracts usually is not for the lay person. That “standard contract” was written by a lawyer sometime in the past, so changing it usually is work for your lawyer.

These are just a few situations where you may want to consult a lawyer. You’ll be surprised at the relatively inexpensive peace of mind you’ll gain from even a short conversation about these — and other — issues. Your best guide is: “When in doubt, get a lawyer to erase the doubt.”

“Having to use your savings to pay an unexpected tax bill can be upsetting, but it doesn’t need to spell financial disaster,” says Steve Krenzer from LowerMyBills.com. “Many Americans may find that with just a few simple steps they can start saving money and get their bank accounts back on the road to recovery.”

From brown-bagging your lunch to foregoing movie night, we have many opportunities to find savings. One good technique is to evaluate your recurring monthly expenses. By trimming these, you can set yourself up to enjoy recurring sav-ings over an extended period of time.

Here are three savings strategies that can help you recover from a tax bill:

Pare DownInsurance PremiumsAuto insurance is a necessary expense, but it can also be one of the easiest to trim. The average expenditure on auto insurance is roughly $817 per year, according to data from the National Association

of Insurance Commissioners. If you’re paying more than that, look for ways to cut the cost. Compari-son shopping online is one of the quickest, easiest ways to find a bet-ter deal on auto insurance.

Also, carrying a higher deduct-ible can help lower your premium, putting more money back into your savings account. Just be sure that you can cover that deductible if you have an accident.

Minimize Your MortgageFor most Americans, their mort-gage is their single biggest monthly expense. Refinancing your loan at a lower interest rate could dramatically reduce your monthly payments.

Be sure to do your homework and don’t sign any mortgage agreement until you are sure you understand all the terms and conditions. Remember, your home is not only your biggest expense, it’s probably also your biggest investment and you need to protect it.

Eliminate Cell Phone ExtrasCell phones are no longer a luxury.

Today they’re all but a necessity. Having a means of instant com-munication is viewed as a safety precaution and a vital tool for our modern business and social lives.

But do you really need to access the Internet, send text messages or play games on your cell phone? Simply cutting these extras and opting for a basic plan — where your phone functions as just a phone — could save you hundreds of dollars in a single year.

“The current economic climate can make depleting your savings — for any reason — a scary prospect, but remember that there are steps you can take to start rebuilding those funds,” Krenzer says.

You can compare rates for these and other monthly expenses at LowerMyBills.com.

Three Savings Strategies to Recover from a Tax Bill

As April 15 creeps closer and closer, many Americans may be facing the unpleasant reality that their paycheck withholdings weren’t enough to cover their taxes and they’ll need to dip into their savings to cover the bill.

Tommy O’s801 Washington St., Vancouver, WAt: (360) 694-5107

Tommy O’s Pacific Rim Bistro in downtown Vancouver is one of our favorites places to eat. The prices are reasonable, the Hawaiian cuisine is delicious, and the restaurant has a nice clean chic Hawaiian atmosphere.

We’ve seen many couples on dates, but it’s also a great place to meet up with friends and family. They have great service.

I like the restaurant atmosphere, it is casual chic Hawaiian, candlelit dinner, luau music on the background, tablecloth and flowers on the tables. Attire can be casual or dressy.

Tommy O’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also have a catering service and delivery.

My favorite dish is the aloha sampler appetizer. The sampler is a combination of teriyaki chicken (boneless/skinless breast marinated in our soy ginger teriyaki sauce and charbroiled), kal-bi ribs (a sweet, spicy Korean-style cross-cut rib) and coconut crunchy shrimp (hand-rolled in tem-pera, sweet coconut and panko bread crumbs). This way we can nibble on different flavors.

Tommy O’s Aloha Hour: It is from 4 to 6 pm daily. They have an assortment of wines and beer and special prices on appetizers. On Fridays and Saturdays they host live music from 6-9 pm.

You’re sure to find something to tempt your tastebuds.

Merlot is exciting, friendly smooth and like velvet. It’ s perfect for the month of April as a transitional wine, for when the air is still crisp, just before the warm up. Merlot tops America’s favorite red wine.

For our wine club this month we are pairing Merlot with:a variety of cheese, crackers, green olives and toasted ba-guettes topped with melted mozzarella and roasted dried tomatoes. Spaghetti and a hearty meatball, sided with stuffed ground turkey eggplant, salad and breadsticks. For dessert enjoy a rich chocolate dessert. Enjoy! Salut!

Merlot for the month of April

Most business owners do not understand the power of a Blog. In fact most do not even know what a Blog is. A Blog is an interactive website that is focused on one topic. It can be any topic but do not mix topics. The more focused your Blog is the more loyal your readers will be and the easier it will be to attract the readers that you want.

The power of a Blog is in its ability to attract and interact with potential clients and current customers. Blogging software today is very easy to use and many interactive components can be easily added. Interactive components are things that draw your readers to either respond or contribute in some way, or allows you to directly interact with them. Here are some examples:

Commenting• Creating Polls• Widgets that interact with Social Sites• Online Community Building• Forums• Videos• Podcasting• Testimonial Sharing•

Most people that read a Blog are looking for information. It is your job as the business owner to be able to provide the information they seek. By making your Blog easy to use, easy to find things on, and easy to interact with, you are building trust with that potential new customer. If they actually find the information they are seeking then when it comes time to make a purchase of product or services they will come back to you.

Yah – That’s a great theory. Does it actually work?

In my personal experience, yes it does. I am a service provider and I do provide a great deal of free informa-tion on my Blog. I find that my target audience (small business owners) either do not have the technical skills to create their online marketing strategy themselves, or they do not have the time. Because I have provided working solutions on my website / Blog they have confidence that I can provide them an online strategy that will work for them, or they hire me to just do it.

Web DesignPremium Websites builds better websites for small businesses. We specialize in informa-tional websites, blogs, photo galleries, and small ecommerce sites. We can help get video, audio, and other technology onto your website. For a portfolio of past web designs visit our website at www.PremiumWebsites.net

Having a website is the first step – not the end. Getting that website to perform and using it as a tool for your business is the next step. Premium Websites is here to get you on the right track with your website.

Blogging for Business:Does It Really Work?By Dotty ScottPremium Websites

Either way I have made my fee – and the free content was why they initially called. When they typed in their search query my Blog had the content they were looking for (and it came up high in the search results), they liked what they read, and often call or email through the site.

Attaching a Blog to your company website has another great benefit – Search Engine Results! The nature of blogging is dynamic and changing. Articles are being posted periodically and every article has a new batch of keyword phrases. Since articles are not removed (they are archived) then the key words keep build-ing over time. The more keywords that are relevant to your business you have on your site the more chances you have to get your site ranked high organically in the search engines. Websites by nature do not change very often. Without adding a Blog your keywords are finite – they are whatever you have in your content. Also when a site does not change search engines check it less frequently and this also affects your search engine rankings. Adding a Blog keeps your site fresh and adding to it keeps building your “long tail” keyword phrases which keeps your site high in the rankings – and brings you more customers / clients / readers.

A Harvest of SavingsThe economy is tanking, grocery bills are climbing and food safety scares are on the rise. For the 43 million Americans planning a vegetable garden this spring, growing your own is a matter of dollars and sense.

Food gardening will jump 19 percent this year over last year, according to a new survey by the National Gardening Association (NGA). Homeowners with shrinking household budgets are looking for help in their own backyards. Can planting a veggie patch really save you money? Government agencies and gardening organizations say yes.

Every $100 spent on vegetable gardening yields $1,000 to $1,700 worth of produce, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates. That’s a serious hedge against skyrocketing food prices, expected to jump another 5 percent this year.

You’ll get a half-pound of edibles from every square foot of ground devoted to backyard crops, NGA experts say. Even a modest garden (15 by 15 feet) can produce more than 100 pounds of garden-fresh tomatoes, salad

greens, vegetables and herbs. Better flavor and bragging rights come with the harvest.

Planting a vegetable plot and keeping it productive isn’t that hard if you start small, keep the basics in mind and plant reliable varieties. Take it step by step:

Lead with Location — A sunny, well-drained spot close to a water spigot is ideal. Leafy greens tolerate some shade, but other crops want eight hours of sun daily.

Suitable Soil — Adding organic material is the key to an easy-care garden. It loosens stiff soil, helps retain moisture and nourishes important soil organisms. Good “ingredients” include manure, humus and chopped-up leaves. Spread a 4-inch layer of amend-ments on your plot and till into the top 9 to 12 inches.

Fertilize Faithfully — All edible plants remove some nutrients from the soil, and can quickly exhaust the soil without the help of a fertilizer. Always follow the rates given on the label when deciding how much to use.

Water Wisely — One inch of water weekly is adequate for most vegetables. Soaker hoses or drip systems deliver water efficiently and keep foliage dry, fending off leaf diseases.

“The design you did for us has turned out to be a marvel. It’s nothing short of breath taking! Suffice it to say you put everything we wanted, plus your own creative ideas, into a beautiful, relaxing yard.

“Landscapers that have seen it praise it as original, creative and absolute in the selection of plants for the coastal weather. You have considered every little detail of our needs, including my horseshoe pit, and packaged it into what will ultimately be an incredibly beautiful yard!”

“With each season we take pleasure in the beauty of all the plants. It’s a unique masterpiece. The waterfall is just fantastic! We have the most beau-tiful yard in the neighborhood.”

Patrol for Pests — Monitor insect damage but try to keep your crops pesticide-free. Hand-pick pests or dislodge them with a jet of water, then let natural predators do the rest. If you must spray, do it late in the day when beneficial insects are less active.

Pick the Right Plants — Flower gardeners gravitate to the newest, showiest varieties, but smart food gardeners appreciate the tried-and-true. Bonnie Plants, avail-able coast to coast, are time-tested varieties selected to suit regional conditions. For best results you’ll need to choose veggie and herb varieties suitable to your geographical location. Because Bonnie’s varieties are dis-tributed regionally, you will automatically have suitable varieties available to you at retail locations in your area.

Look for Bonnie Plants in eco-friendly biodegradable pots that not only keep tons of plastic pots from ending up in landfills, but also reduce transplant shock. Just tear off the bottom, set the pot in the ground and water.

You found your dream deal on a foreclosed home, but will that great price tag come with a different kind of higher cost? Buying a repossessed property, short sale or a home offered at a bargain price — because of its condition — can mean you’re assuming much higher risks.

Repossessed and short sale homes are often abandoned and neglected, leaving them with much more potential for unforeseen structural defects, plumbing, electrical, heating systems, environmental issues and many other problems. Fixing these woes can cost far more than the financial savings from a distressed property purchase. There also may be unknown defects, such as mold or radon, that could affect your family’s health and safety.

Still, it is possible to get a dream deal on a distressed home. Before you sign on the dotted line, be sure to have the house thoroughly inspected by a professional, so you can reduce these potential risks as well as financial costs. A home inspector can help you identify

potential problems in the home you’re considering buying, so you know in advance what you’re getting into — and what you should walk away from.

There are many ways to find a home inspector, includ-ing consulting family, friends, your attorney, real estate professional or mortgage professional. You can also find information on inspectors across the country on www.ashi.org, the Web site of The American Society of Home Inspectors, the organization that sets the standards of practice for the inspection industry.

Homebuyers aren’t the only ones who can benefit from a home inspection. If you’re selling your home, having it inspected before you list it may help sell your home in less time and for more money. Moreover, homeowners can benefit from maintenance inspections, such as an energy inspection, which can help reduce monthly energy costs, and a home safety inspection that can help seniors stay in their homes longer. Home Inspector Evaluation TipsIf you’re thinking of hiring a home inspector, ASHI offers a few tips on how to evaluate candidates:

q Visit the “Find a Home Inspector” section of ASHI’s Web site to find a qualified ASHI inspector in your area. Many inspectors also list their specialties and other background information, such as their experience, on this site.

q Ask the inspector how he operates. What format will the report be in? Ask for sample reports.

q Talk with each candidate to see who is the best fit for your needs and comfort, as well as for the property being inspected.

q Check all references. Don’t automatically go with the lowest price. Remember, the old ad-age is often true — you get what you pay for.

q Attend the inspection to ensure you get the best value and most information for your investment.

A home inspector can be your best ally in ensuring your dream deal doesn’t turn into a nightmare.

Vancouver, once the largest western outpost of the Brit-

ish Hudson’s Bay Company, where supplies and food were bartered in the 1800s, it was closed in 1860 as Ameri-cans took over commerce. The outpost was later recre-ated as the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. The oldest operating airfield in the West is the Pearson Air Field, vintage aircrafts are displayed at the Pearson Air Museum. Looking for adven-ture? Vancouver is perfect for day trips to the Columbia River Gorge, the breathtak-ingly beautiful 70-mile river stretch that cuts through the Cascade Mountains, or Mount St. Helens, the site of the famous volcano, both of which offer a slew of outdoor activities. For calmer pas-times, cruise the picturesque river in the Columbia Gorge riverboat, or visit Beacon Rock, the world’s second largest monolith, where a walking trail leads to spec-tacular panoramic views.
