What is a smart phone?

• A smart phone is a device which has features of both a computer and a mobile device (cell phone).

• Unlike a normal mobile device a smartphone has a vast amount of both local storage and memory.

• Smartphones have operating units like computers.

• Smartphones act as mobile entertainment units where a user can: watch videos, listen to music, update blogs, as well as audio and video blogging.

• Different makes of smartphones include: I phone, Blackberry, HTC, Samsung etc

• .• Most importantly with a smartphone one can access web 2.0, exactly

like you the web you would use on the internet.

The Market for smartphones.

Smartphone sales• Smartphone sales are on a

steep increase• With over 55% of people

projected to own a smartphone by the end of 2011.

• According to recent research many businesses are now allowing smartphones for business purposes.

Advantages:• Application software is being created to use

smartphones for business related functions.• A lot of the work that would usually done with a

note book or desktop computer, can now be done from anywhere, which is extremely convenient.

• The user can be connected to a network, anywhere anytime, which enables the user to communicate with colleagues efficiently.

• More and more people are buying smartphones which enables a broader sphere of communication which ultimately enable people to interact with each other, share ideas, have online conferences/meetings etc. from anywhere at anytime.

• In terms of businesses, less expenses are incurred as the operating costs of the smartphones usually lies with the employee.

• The full potential of smartphones in terms of communication in the workplace is yet to be known, but the possibilities seem endless.

Affect on communication in the workplace:Some believe that smart phones may actually be beneficial for communication in the workplace as they connect businesses from various countries around the world.

The affect of smartphones on communication in the work place continued…

Disadvantages:

• Employees could use smartphones for other uses not relating to work for example: social networking, tweeting, to watch video entertainment, listen to music etc.

• The capability of smartphones to process the above applications, could distract employees and prevent them from doing their work and communicating with colleagues competently.

So…• If businesses create

regulations on the use of smartphones during business hours, and limit use to “work only”

• Then the full potential of smartphones in communication in and around the workplace could be reached.

• This would create an environment that is convenient to communicate with other work colleagues.

Advantages:• Smartphones allow users to instantly

access information, conduct research and communicate with others, increasing the speed of productivity.

• As the Smartphone is a mobile device, the user has access to an infinite amount of information 24 hours a day 7 days a week, no matter where they are. This makes access to information convenient, which will positively impact productivity.

• Applications can be installed onto the phone which enables users to manage their business hours efficiently, manage their work projects and email clients.

Disadvantages:• Users might use their smartphones

for personal use during working hours, decreasing productivity.

Affect of Smartphones on education:

Advantages:• Mobile learning devices enable learners and teachers to

interact with one another anywhere, anytime.• More learners are purchasing and using smartphones, thus

mobile learning becomes possible because many students own such devices

• Students have access to any kind of information, and research at any point

Disadvantages:• Smartphones could become a distraction in any learning

environment due their ability to become an entertainment unit and facilitate social networking.

Conclusion

• In terms of the previous slides Smartphones have enormous advantages and potential in communication and productivity in the workplace as well as in education.

• Smartphones also increase ones ability to communicate socially via Facebook, Twitter, blogs, email etc.

• The disadvantages of smartphones seem insignificant when comparing them to the advantages.
