Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Thomas the Apostle, Thank you to our Christmas Mar-ket volunteers for putting on another wonderful community event for the parish that supports the building fund. I’m g r a t e f u l

for the many who sold raffle tickets as well as those who do-nated items to the event. I am particularly grateful to the orga-nizing committee for putting together a wonderful event. I hope you’re able to purchase some items from the Market this weekend. As we continue our journey through the month of No-vember where we commemorate all the faithful departed, the book of names of the dead is still up in the Church

where you can write the names of your loved ones who have passed away. Through the work of parishioner Dr. Jim Rydel, St. Thomas is hosting a blood drive on December 19 in the parish hall. Please feel free to sign up on the sheet located on the table in the back of the church to give the gift of

life. Thank you to Dr. Rydel for spearheading this good work. Also, a friendly reminder that our parish and school offices will be closed Wednesday, November 24

through Friday, November 26 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Trail

From the Pastor’s Desk

Our son started at STA midway through his 4th grade year. We decided to move him to STA because we were impressed with the school’s commitment to providing an in person option for students in 2020. The teachers, administrators and staff all worked together to make sure that our son had a smooth transition to his new school. My husband and I were immediately impressed with the teachers’ dedication to their students and the consistent approach to foundational skill building in reading, writing, math, science and social studies. We received clear and frequent communication from his teachers and had a clear sense of what was happening in the classroom every day. Moreover, STA emphasized character education and supported the development of the whole child with virtues of the month, social and emotional learning, after school activities and regular physical education. The curriculum was rigorous and we were amazed at how much work our child got done during his time at STA. We saw our son dive into numerous novels, write weekly essays, learn US geography and become proficient with long division and fractions. As parents, we have seen our son grow academically due to STA’s structured and nurturing environment. When you support STA, you are supporting an important part of the Hyde Park neighborhood – one that has been educating all of God’s children in extraordinary variety since 1886. Indeed, our family is proud to be a part of this incredible community.

Next week we celebrate the conclusion of our liturgi-cal Year, with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, and begin our new liturgical year the following week with the first Sunday of Advent. This

month, in faith formation, we are learning about the liturgical year and its various seasons, colors, feasts and celebrations. Our Liturgical Year forms the basic rhythm of our life of prayer. Over the next three weeks, we will explore the three “cycles” of our liturgical year – the Temporal Cycle, the Sanctoral Cycle and the Lectionary Cycle. The Temporal Cycle of our church year unfolds for us the entire mystery of Christ. This cycle is centered around the two great feasts of Christ’s life – his Incarnation and his Passion, Death and Resurrection. We prepare for each feast and then celebrate it both on the actual solemnity and for a season afterwards. This is the rhythm of our year. Advent prepares us for Christ’s Incarnation and the Christmas Sea-son helps us to reflect on the mystery of the Incarnation. Lent prepares us for Christ’s Passion, Death and Resurrec-tion and the Easter Season continues the celebration for 50 days. The remainder of our year is Ordinary Time, which is still extraordinary as it helps us to reflect on the entirety of Christ’s life and the example he sets forth for us. Ordinary Time receives its name from the Latin word “ordinal”, since we are counting the weeks.

Questions of the Week

Adults: What would you be doing differently in your life if you truly believed you would meet Christ soon?

Children: What would you do for others today if you thought you would not have another chance to do it?

Eucharist Home Visits

If you or a loved one are ill and unable to attend Mass, there are Ministers of Care available to bring Holy Commun-

ion to the home. The Ministers of Care will be fully vac-cinated and will wear a mask and practice other safety measures. We would appreciate members of the house-hold wearing masks as well. Please call Lisa at 773-324-2626 and she will make the arrangements.

St. Thomas the Apos-tle faith community has long been called “God’s people in extraordinary variety.” We are a won-derful parish where some of our members have worshiped for dec-ades, while others are short-term visitors who

may only stay with us for a few months or years while they study or work in Chicago’s historic Hyde Park. Many ar-chitecture buffs have toured STA church which is named in the National Register of Historic Buildings. Since 1886, this very special parish has also been blessed to have a fan-tastic parish school, educating God’s children in extraordi-nary variety both in academics and in faith formation. It is truly an honor to be a part of this special parish, and you can leave a permanent marker of your time here by pur-chasing a commemorative brick for one of our two brick walkways. Your engraved brick can commemorate a special event, honor a loved one, or celebrate a wedding, baptism, anniversary, graduation or other family milestone. The brick can be engraved with your name or that of someone you wish to honor, such as a special teacher, professor, or classmate. All net proceeds benefit the STA School Endowment Fund. A standard 4x8 inch brick for $200 may have 3 lines with up to 13 characters (including spaces) per line. Your purchase of a commemorative brick will help STA school to continue its tradition of excellence. For more informa-tion, please get an application from Lisa Couch at the par-ish office (773-324-2626) or from Commemorative Brick committee chair, Mary Kaess (773-924-6097) or [email protected].

Bulletin Holiday Deadlines Due to our printer’s holiday schedule, we ask that all bul-letin submissions through the January 2 bulletin be sub-mitted on the following schedule:

Tuesday 11/16 for 11/28/21bulletin Tuesday 12/7 for 12/19/21 bulletin Monday 12/13 for 12/26/21 bulletin Monday 12/20 for 1/2/22 bulletin

Because of COVID, we are adopt-ing a different model for the “Christmas Stars” project for this year. We ask that parishioners pur-

chase $25 gift cards from name brand retailers (VISA, Jewel-Osco, Trader Joe’s, Target, Walmart) and donate them to StVdP. The gift cards will give the heads of households the flexibility to use them where their greatest family need is. Our StVdP group will match up the col-lected gift cards with individuals/families in the parish community and STA school families in need within our community. We hope to also be able to include families

from our sister parish — Visitation parish — as well as an Englewood shelter for women and children. We will be collecting the gift cards after Masses on December 5th. Look for us at the parking lot of the Church after these Mass celebrations. We hope that our STA community will rally to generously help our neighbors by being part of the StVdP Christmas Gift Card Program! We thank all parishioners who have continued to donate to the poor boxes in church—you sustain us. If you are looking for an organization that does grass roots work helping others, come and talk to us when we are collecting the gift cards—we ARE always looking for new members!
