What’s Happening at Holy Spirit?

Diocesan Simbang Gabi Kick off Bus leaving at 4:30 pm | Tuesday, December 11 | $20

We're chartering a bus for the Diocesan Simbang Gabi on Tuesday, December 11th. The bus will leave Holy Spirit at 4:30 pm sharp, and return from the Cathedral at 9:30 pm that evening. The Dioce-san Simbang Gabi Mass will be at 7 pm, It will be served by our Ac-olyte Bishop's team, and there is a reception following Mass. The cost for the bus is $20 per person. If you'd like a seat on the bus, you can pay for your seat at the next Filipino Society food sale on 12/02. Please contact Pat Saturnio, 510-468-7321 or Barney Chan, 510-371-9714 to make your payment and get a seat on the bus. The bus will sell out quickly so don't delay.

Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Mother Saturday, Dec. 8 | Holy Day of Obligation | Mass times below

Saturday, Dec 8 is a holy day of obligation. Mass for the Immacu-late Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be Friday (vigil) at 7:30 pm, and Saturday at 7:00 am, 8:15 am, and 11 am. Please note the Saturday 5 pm Mass is a Sunday Mass vigil and is not a Mass for the holy day of obligation.

Holy Spirit T-shirts will be on sale after Masses on December 9! Please note that the Saturday 5 pm Mass will not have T-shirts for sale, but they are always available to purchase in the office. This week, check out a talk from Scott Hahn called “How to Bring Fallen-Away Catholics Back to the Church.” What is evangelization all about? What role does the Church ex-pect ordinary Catholics to play in spreading the Catholic Faith? Dr. Scott Hahn, author and renowned theologian, challenges cradle Catholics to witness to the Faith through everyday life. He presents proven and effective ways to touch those who have fall-en away from the Church, even those with the most hardened of hearts.

Are we really anticipating the coming of the Son of Man? When was the last time anyone of us looked for signs in the sun, the moon and the stars? Maybe lately with the smoke from the fires up north turning the sun and the moon a very strange red. Let us face reality, we are all really busy with day to day stuff. In fact, if it was not for our holidays like Christmas (Jesus Birth), Easter (Conquered Death), some of us would probably have a hard time remembering those important events too. In the first Gospel of Ad-vent, we are challenged to think of the return of the Lord. Many of the early followers of Jesus believed that He would return soon after the resurrection. Did you ever wonder why the Gospels were written

decades after Jesus rose to Heaven? When the Savior did not return as expected, there was a realiza-tion that His teachings must be written down for future generations. It was then obvious that none of us know exactly when He will return. Advent reminds us to be prepared. We are grateful for this reminder both in the readings of this sea-son and the special masses leading up to Christmas. Yes, we are busy, but thankfully we are given this time to pause and consider how we are getting ready for the coming of the Lord. As we begin this new liturgical year, let us try not to get caught up in the anxieties of life. Let’s try and stay focused on being a true, loving follower of Christ. In doing this, when God does return, we can stand tall, look up at the clouds and say, “what took you so long?” God bless you all during this Advent season. Deacon Steve

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul at Holy Spirit serves the poor and needy in our parish. Through your generous donations, our ministry has been able to provide many basic needs for our neighbors who are less fortunate. But we cannot do this without the efforts of volunteers. We are looking for adult volunteers as well as Junior Vincentians who need to fulfill some vol-unteer hours.
