Working towards Asia’s energy future – smart, green and consumer-friendly. The underlying theme of the conference was to assess the policy and future market direction of the electric utility industry in Asia and the impact on all players, including governments, utilities, the industry and consumers.

The conference kick-started with keynote welcome addresses by Thailand’s energy stakeholders – Pallapa Ruangrong, Commissioner at the Energy Regulatory Commission of Thailand and Chokchun Sukanthapruk, Deputy Governor (Planning and System Development) at the Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand – each addressing the 300-strong audience on Thailand’s plans and efforts towards the development of a smart grid, with the ultimate goal of providing the country’s energy consumers with more reliable, clean and ultimately cheaper electricity.

The following panel debate between six key representatives from the SE Asian utility community (ERC, MEA, PEA, TNB, MERALCO, NGCP and Standing Committee for Energy of the Senate of the Kingdom of Thailand), was chaired by Milo Sjardin of Bloomberg New Energy Finance and raised important questions over the roles and responsibilities of the key parties towards the development of smart grids:

• One of the biggest challenges in the region is the regulatory framework of pricing electricity. In order for a smart grid to be deployed it is imperative that the pricing structure is changed so that a smart grid can be paid for and be more effective.

• Communication with customers is essential. Customers need to be aware of the benefits of smart meters and how they can best be used. The end objective is more reliable, potentially lower cost electricity and customers need to be aware of this so that there is buy-in from their side.

• Technology is at the heart of the smart grid. Given the fast development of technology it is important that regulators and utilities deploy smart grid in a gradual and flexible manner.

During the next one and a half days, innovative policies, projects and investment plans were brought to the table as a testimony of Asia’s commitment towards a sustainable, efficient and ultimately customer friendly energy future. The conference agenda was arranged around three main themes: Metering & Consumer; Smart Grids, ICT & Data and Transmission & Distribution. Each theme had its own dedicated programme that ran concurrently with the others, providing attendees with over 50 individual talks and more than 20 hours of presentations.

Among the many quality case study presentations, a special mention goes to the non-Asian speakers who brought along some internationally acclaimed projects and offered their international perspective to the predominantly Asian mix.

Michael Pesin of Seattle City Light spoke about the city’s smart grid journey towards the development of future proof grids.

Page 14: SHOW REPORT - Asian Utility Week 27-28 June 2018, … · ideas with the industry’s leading innovators, ... P.S. If you wish to be ... (Telecommunication System) Tenaga Nasional

Ramy Soussou from the Energy Retailers Association of Australia brought to the table the smart meter roll out experience of the most competitive energy retail market worldwide.

Marcus Tyle of Australian distributor Energex presented on their pioneering meter data warehousing and analytics programme for the enhanced power monitoring and support of smart grid pilots.

Poul Berthelsen of Danish utility NRGi provided attendees with an overview of the company’s successful smart meter roll out and journey towards a smarter grid.

Overall, the conference provided an effective platform for the Asian utility community to meet, discuss challenges and compare actionable strategies towards the development of a true smart energy market to the benefit of both the utility as well as the customer.

“The event provided vast opportunities to learn and exchange knowledge and experience on smart metering/smart grid technologies and implementation from conference delegates, manufacturers and solution providers at a single venue. The round table sessions were especially beneficial as deep discussionson specific topics could be conducted.”

thank youDear Industry Colleagues,

We would like to thank all our sponsors and exhibitors for their enthusiasm and proactivity in making the co-located Metering, Billing/CRM Asia and Transmission & Distribution/Smart Grids Asia show a tremendous success.

Very special thanks go out to our Diamond Sponsor Enverv, Platinum Sponsor Holley and Gold Sponsor Mitsubishi Electric.

Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback from those who attended, we can proudly say that we have exceeded even our own expectations and have delivered our best show ever. Together with our Sponsors and Exhibitors we have yet again significantly grown the participant numbers.

It was also fantastic to see the great effort and flair our exhibitors applied to the new Exhibitor Excellence sessions; this experience elevated the look and feel of the event to a whole new level.

The 2014 event is already looking exceptionally promising with more than 50% of the exhibition floor space already sold. We are especially excited with the rebranding of the show to “Asian Utility Week”, allowing us the opportunity of opening up the event with the aim of creating the one stop shop for the region’s smart energy community.
