Tenaga Nasional Bhd, MARIM Risk Manager of the Year 2010 Award

I t was a great honour for Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) to be awarded the MARIM Risk Manager of the Year 2010 Award in Genting Highlands on 18 October 2011. Tn. Hj. Anuar Abd. Shukur, General Manager of the Enterprise Wide Risk Management Department, accepted the award on behalf of TNB’s Chief Risk Officer, En. Mohamed Rafique Merican, Chief Financial Officer / Vice President ( G r o u p F i n a n c e ) , T N B .

The theme of the 2010 Award was “Risk Management: How effective are you?” The evaluation criteria covered areas such as the establishment of a functional risk management framework and strategies, training and communication as well as effective techniques in the practice of risk management in daily operations.

Enterprise Wide Risk Management (EWRM) in TNB kicked-off in 2003 with the formation of a dedicated EWRM Department to establish a risk management framework and to embed the risk management culture in TNB Group. As a public-listed company, TNB is subject to the Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance requirements with regards to risk management and internal controls. Since then, the EWRM framework in TNB was consistently implemented across TNB Group to provide a well-structured systematic process to assess business risks and lessen their impact on business objectives. The EWRM approach is executed by establishing an appropriate EWRM structure to support the delivery of risk management objectives. This structure is an enhancement of TNB’s existing organisational structure to embed and align risk management within existing strategies and operational activities. One of the most important elements of the risk management structure is the clear definition and communication of roles, responsibilities and accountabilities for managing risk within the organisation.

The establishment and implementation of any risk management framework requires a robust support system, which includes an effective system of periodic risk reporting and monitoring. TNB business operating divisions and subsidiaries prepares and submits bi-annual risk assessment reports that are deliberated in the risk management committees as well as at the Board Audit Committee. The reports are generated from the TNB Risk Information System (TRIS), which is an online real-time system developed in-house by the ICT Division in cooperation with the EWRM Department. TRIS has been in effect since 2006 and has been periodically enhanced to meet the needs of the users.

The successful implementation of enterprise risk management in any organisation would be hampered without an effective risk communication and training plan. In TNB, an internally developed risk management training module is an ongoing training module conducted in TNB’s training centre and is also one of the management modules in the training programme for new executives. In addition, one of the roles of the appointed risk managers and coordinators in each operating division and subsidiary is to conduct regular risk awareness sessions for its staff as an effort to continuously embed the risk management culture in TNB. Moreover, two risk management forums are organised annually where various risk management and operational topics are presented and discussed with the risk managers and coordinators across TNB Group. In conclusion, the effective implementation of enterprise risk management in TNB is credited to each and every TNB personnel from the executive directors to the non-executive staff that had taken the initiative to manage risks at his/her area of responsibility, keeping in view TNB’s vision to be among the leading corporations in energy and related businesses globally.

Putting Theory Into Practice To Managing Risk Seminar organized by Financial and Banking Society (FABS) collaboration with MARIM Student Chapter (MSC) and College of Business (COB) at the DKG 5/1. This event was started at 2pm and all participants began to take the seat that was provided by the organised committees. The guests of honor enter the hall, which was attended by the advisory of Financial and Banking (FABS) En.Karul and also special guest Prof. Dato’ Dr. Zainul Baharin Bin Datuk Hj Mohd Zain, Program Coordinator for Risk Management and Insurance, Dr.Norlida Bt Abdul Manab and lecturers Risk Management and Insurance Dr.Lim Chee Chee, Mrs Rodziah bt Ahmad, Madam Tan Sek Choo and Ms Habibah Tolos.

The seminar was packed with relevant and thought-provoking topics on human resource management on the risk management, issues risk, assessment & risk control, types of roles in risk management, Human Research Management schools of thought and the potential risks to Human Resource Management and many others. The various inputs have been obtained by participants especially to students of the Risk Management and Insurance.

The seminar was continued with the second session with Encik Fa’eek, Risk Management Consultant of the Crisis & Risk Management in Malaysia (CRIM) was shared with us his topic entitled “Practical Application of ERM for Universities in Malaysia”. Many topics were discussed at this knowledge-sharing about Enterprise Risk Management, the national integrity plan, cooperate governance, Enterprise risk management implementation and also highlight about the awareness and education will go a long way in changing the public’s perception about risk management and insurance because are still many people who does not understand the scope of risk management itself. Therefore, the existence of such as seminars is to help communities and students in the field of risk management, especially in their real world.

Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA) is the 8th polytechnic in Malaysia which began its operation in Januari 1997 with its first intake of students in July 1997. It has six academic departments namely, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Commerce and Aircraft Maintenance, General Studies and Mathematics, Science & Computing

Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA) which was formerly known as Politeknik Shah Alam was renamed after the late Sultan of Selangor, DYMM Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah on 8 March 2002. With its strategic location Selangor Darul Ehsan together with its committed, dedicated and professional staff, PSA has evolved into a dynamic polytechnic inline with its academic success dan infrastructure development.

PSA synonymous with its title as "Politeknik Super Active" among other polytechnics created history by becoming the first polytechnic to be awarded the MS ISO 9002:1994 certification from SIRIM in September 1999. On 4th March 2010, Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Shah was upgraded to be one of the three premier polytechnics in Malaysia.

Its success continued with PSA together with Politeknik Ungku Omar being rated as a Tier 5 polytechnic by the Minister of Higher Education in October 2010.

Commerce Department

The Commerce Department is one of the academic department in PSA. It is currently helmed by Puan Rubiah Ismail, the Head of Department and assisted by 57 academic staff with a student enrolment of 1142. The department offers the following diploma programs:-

Diploma in Business Studies

Diploma in Insurance

Diploma in International Trade

Diploma in Marketing

Diploma in Insurance Program

The Diploma in Insurance program was incepted in July 1997. The program offers courses in insurance, risk management, takaful, financialplanning and management. As at 1st March 2012, 750 students have graduated from the program. Majority of the students are today gainfully employed in the insurance and its related industries.

Graduates of the program have a high employability rate among the polytechnic graduates. Its linkage with the universities and professional bodies like MII, FPAM, PIAM and MARIM has enabled it to obtain support and professional advice on achieving a high standard for the program.

With the collaboration with MARIM and the setting up of the MARIM Student Chapter in Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, it has great confidence it will further enhance the quality of the program and produce graduates with great calibre to need the industry needs.
