Eating Disorders

Association of South Australia

Hope Recovery

Support and Guidance

DGR Status

BackgroundEDASA was established in 2012 in recog-nition of the need for specialised advice, support and assistance for any person who is affected directly or indirectly by an eating disorder or body image issue. EDASA’s primary focus is on the prevention and early intervention of eating disorders through education and awareness activities. EDASA does not currently receive any government funding and relies entirely on donations and fund raising.

EDASA was established by Loraine House and Kate Parsons they have proven ability to connect with and understand the con-cerns of consumers and carers with eating disorders. Kate and Loraine deliver The Butterfly Foundation’s health promotion and early intervention education services throughout SA. Having worked in this field for several years, Loraine and Kate have established strong relationships with clinicians and professionals both in SA and nationwide. They have been involved with nationally based initiatives for eating disor-ders such as the National Eating Disorders Collaboration and have established links with members of other eating disorders associations interstate.

VisionTo reduce the incidence, severity and associated stigma of eating disorders in our community.

MissionEDASA is dedicated to educating the com-munity and providing a variety of resources for the prevention and early intervention of eating disorders.

EDASA is committed to providing a respect-ful, understanding and safe environment for those experiencing the effects of negative body image and eating disordered issues.

To work cooperatively with expert clinicians and specialists in eating disorders.

To inspire hope and recovery through a compassionate, empathic and holistic approach.

The Impacts of Eating DisordersEating disorders are unique among mental illnesses in that they are complex and distressing psychological disorders with profound physical consequences. Eating disorders are also highly individual with the development of the eating disorder being due to multiple factors. Eating disorders are categorised as; Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) and Binge Eating Disorder.

Eating disorders affect people of all ages, backgrounds, sexualities, men and women. You can’t tell if a person has an eating disor-der by just looking at them. It can often take months and even years for some people to seek help for their eating disorder and it is crucial that their first point of contact is pos-itive and non-judgmental. Early intervention is key as the longer eating disorders are left undiagnosed and untreated the more serious and harder to treat they become.

Some common misconceptions about eating disorders are that they are a lifestyle choice not an illness, that they are just a diet gone wrong, that families, particularly mothers, are to blame for eating disorders and that they are a cry for attention. In order to develop an understanding of eating dis-orders, extensive community education is required. This involves educating the public about eating disorders, the identifications of symptoms and supporting prevention and early help seeking.

Eating disorders are estimated to affect approximately 9% of the population and up to 20% of females may have undiagnosed eating disorders. Evidence shows that even though eating disorders can occur in people of all ages, adolescents and young people are increasingly at risk and eating disorders represent the third most common chronic illness among young females. The impact of an eating disorder is not only felt by the individual but often by the person’s entire family and support group who often feel stress, loss of income and a disruption to family relationships.

In 2012 The Butterfly Foundation launched Australia’s first socio-economic impact re-port on eating disorders - Paying the Price: the economic and social impact of eating disorders in Australia. The report found

that the total social and economic impact of the estimated 913,986 Australians who have a diagnosed eating disorder this year is $69.7 billion. This does not include many other associated costs and is a conservative estimate given the limited data currently available. The report also estimated that the mortality rates are almost twice as high for people with eating disorders than in the general population - 1,828 reported deaths from eating disorders in 2012 (515 males and 1,313 females).

Early intervention and prevention policies are critical to help reduce these figures. No single cause of eating disorders has been identified, however known risk factors include; genetic vulnerability, psycholog-ical factors and socio-cultural influences. It is possible to reduce some of these risk factors such as low self esteem, body dissatisfaction, an internalisation of the thin socio-cultural ideal and extreme weight loss behaviours by educating young people, parents and their communities.

FOUNDATION SHINE “SHINES’ FOR CARER SUPPORT Over several years, Carer Support has been collaborating with other agencies in order to provide support to a young teenager with a highly complex and traumatic family history.

A much older family relative is providing a home and significant support for this teenager.

As a result of this young person’s challenges in processing feelings related to trauma experienced, he struggles to sustain school participation.

His non-attendance has contributed to him becoming extremely isolated, rarely leaving the house.

He is very aware of the impact that his withdrawal and isolation from school and recreational activities has had and he has voiced concerns about not having any friends.

At present one of the few constants in his life is the ongoing meaningful contact with his Sammy D Foundation mentor.

Each week his mentor picks him up for roughly 1 - 1.5 hours at a time and engages him in various outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, bush walks etc.

Over time, his mentor has built excellent rapport with him, and the young person is very respectful and appreciative of the mentor relationship.

With the recent generous contribution of Foundation Shine and through Carer Supports coordination, this young person and his elderly carer can continue to benefit from the skills and commitment of the Sammy D mentor.

Foundation Shine has begun an active Facebook page thanks to Robyn's niece Tyler- May.  We hope to build it up with information regarding mental health, positive quotes and Foundation Shine News.  So if you are on Facebook we would love you to take a minute to become a friend and like our page.

ADELAIDE FESTIVAL CENTRE BANQUET ROOM

The beautiful and picturesque banks of the Torrens were the setting for the 2014 Annual Mother’s Day Event – and what a day it was.

The room just looked gorgeous with Robyn’s beautiful table centres including a $75 voucher from ZINK: The Element of Hair and was complimented by silk embroidered heart eye pads made by Barb Reuter, with a citron pendant designed and made by Maria Kenda AM Jewellery. Bec Minuzzo of Ribbon Whirls further spoilt all guests with individual gift boxes filled with treats.

Foundation Shine Inc. President, Robyn May delivered her speech of sincere thanks to all those who had made the day possible, but also explained the work of the organizations that received funding from proceeds for the day. They were Eating Disorders Assoc of S.A., Catherine House, Carer Support and Mental Illness Fellowship of S.A. Inc.

Foundation Shine’s effervescent compere Eve Goodings greeted the ladies with her usual wit we have all become so accustomed to and joined with special guest, well known Adelaide personality and Advertiser Columnist Ali Clarke in a frank, interesting and inspiring chat. Ali Clarke is the patron for Carer Support.

The Catherines, the resident Catherine House Choir sang from their hearts and were overwhelmingly received by all.

We were thrilled with the fashion parade of the gorgeous new season’s range from iconic fashion house Perri Cutten, with the models wearing designer hats created by Studio Hats and was finished off with designs from multi award winning couture designer Alexis George resulting in gasps from the audience in sheer adoration for the dreamy, fairytale designs.

The beautiful models were so generously supplied by RMT Model Management with Suzie and Jo from Zink – The Element of Hair also donating their time and energy to ensure

the models had amazing hair styles and Natasha finished it off with simply glamorous make up.

If all of that wasn’t enough, there was a lucky dip which kept Bobby and Margi flat out and Ku De Ta with their range of bags and jewellery satisfied the urge for retail therapy.

Maria Kenda AM, patron and sponsor displayed some of her magnificent jewellery designs, carefully selected from the range available at the Hilton in Victoria Square, Adelaide.

The Silent Auction created some competitive rivalry as each tried to outbid each other.

A lucky door prize, donated by Maria Kenda AM was received with much excitement so too the raffle winners !!

Shaz finished off the day with Foundation Shine’s adopted ‘anthem’ Que Sera Sera and brought to a close another very successful event.

The day promised to deliver happiness and I think there is no doubting we achieved that and more.

We raised $14,000 from the day, with Maria Kenda AM donating $4000.00 from the proceeds of sales. As a result the four organisations we set out to assist, each received $3500.00 to assist in their vital work in the community.

Sincere thanks to all who attended and donated goods and services to make the event such a success.

DONATION OF CLOTHING BY KOOKAI AUSTRALIA

We are extremely grateful to Natasha Osman who recommended Foundation Shine  to KOOKAI Australia as a worthy charity in which to donate cartons  filled with their  gorgeous garments.

We eagerly jumped at this very generous offer and were happily able to pass the clothing on to MIFSA and Catherine House.

MIFSA (Mental Illness Fellowship SA) are looking forward to placing them in their Sunflower Shops  which are run entirely by volunteers and where everything sold  goes towards raising valuable funds for MIFSA and mental health.

Locations for these Sunflower Shops are Goodwood, Christie Downs & Seacombe Gardens.

Catherine House who educate women out of homelessness also gladly received some of the garments to become part of their "working woman's wardrobe".

garments donated by Kookai.
