Dear Fitagians,

The agitation against OLS

continues to some extent,

but to a greater extent it has

reached to a compromised sta-

tus. Companies were given

time till 14th of January to give

their undertaking of control-

ling predatory prices, but none

of them have given in clear cut

writing about the same. They

all have given in writing

that they will take some or

the other corrective actions,

but none of these companies

whom we had approached on

the national level, have guts to

state that, they will enforce

control over OLS and regular-

ize prevailing predatory

prices promoted by OLS by

all means.

I am highly surprised with

the behavior of all these com-

panies, as on one hand they are

claiming to be trying their level

best to support the channel

community and on the other

hand they do not commit to

channel community that they

will stop predatory prices float-

ing. These are clear cut show

case of double standards ex-

pressing their cunning mental-

ity of taking advantage from

both communities by giving

them false commitments. The

fact is, they will never pressur-

ize OLS to control or eliminate

the predatory prices, instead

they will take advantage of the

situation by giving them spe-

cial models which can be sold

and found only on OLS. “Isko

IDC’s Top 10 technologypredictions for 2015

IDC’s Top 10 technologypredictions for 2015

As the year comes to a

close, it’s the season of

analyst firms looking ahead at

the year to come in technology.

Not to be confused with Gart-

ner’s Top 10 strategic technol-

ogy trends for 2015, market

intelligence firm IDC has re-

leased its own future forecast:

“IDC WORLDWIDE Predic-

tions 2015: Accelerating Inno-

vation on the 3rd Platform.”

The “3rd Platform” IDC is re-

ferring to, which it coined back

in 2007, is the concept of the

next generation of software

founded on cloud computing,

Big Data, mobile devices and

social media. (Gartner’s

“Nexus of Forces” is a similar

concept.) The growth of

the “3rd Platform” in

all phases of the in-

formation and com-

munications technology (ICT)

market is a major theme of the

forecast, but 10 of IDC’s pre-

dictions in particular stand out,

spanning growth in mobile,

cloud, Big Data, the Internet of

Things and more.

1. New technologywill take over themarket: According to

IDC’s predic-

t i o n s ,

WORLDWIDE

ICT spending will grow 3.8%

in 2015 to more than US$3.8

trillion. Nearly all of this

spending growth will be fo-

cused on 3rd P l a t f o r m

technologies, while 2nd Plat-

form technologies (PCs) will

continue to see declining

spending.

2. Wireless datagrowth: IDC projected that

wireless data will balloon to

13% of telecommunications

spending, accounting for $536

billion. The company predicted

this will lead carriers to develop

platform- and API-based

services to attract developers.

3. Phablets will rise, wearables will under-whelm: Mobile device and

app sales will reach $484 billion

in 2015, according to IDC,

accounting for 40% of IT

spending growth. This is a

slower, steadier rate of mobile

growth than in past years, and

IDC projected it will be driven

largely by phablets and enter-

prise mobile app development.

The firm added that wearables

will see an explosion in innova-

tion that will not translate to

market value quite yet. At the

same time, IDC believed

Chinese vendors (such as

Xiaomi and OnePlus) will

capture 15% or more of

WORLDWIDE market share.

4. Cloud services: IDC

predicted PaaS, SaaS and IaaS

services will remain a hotbed of

activity in 2015, with $118

billion in spending. IaaS

adoption is projected for the

highest growth (36%) as new

competitors take on AWS.

According to IDC senior vice

president and chief analyst

Frank Gens, IDC foresaw “new

partnerships forming among

‘strange bedfellows,’ such as

Facebook with Microsoft and/or

IBM or Amazon partnering with

HP, to expand market opportu-

nities.”

5. Big Data and ana-lytics: IDC predicted Big

Data spending will grow to

$125 billion in 2015, with

video, audio and image analyt-

ics taking on more importance.

The firm also projects that

Data-as-a-Service will drive the

forging of new Big Data supply

chains focused on commercial

and open data sets.

6. The Internet ofThings: The predictions

identified IoT as one of the most

important factors for growth of

the 3rd Platform in 2015. IDC

predicted the invention of more

intelligent and connected

“things,” with a third of IoT

spending focused on intelligent

embedded devices and predic-

tive maintenance emerging as

an important IoT category.

7. Cloud services willbecome the newdata center: IDC said that

data centers are undergoing a

fundamental transformation in

the 3rd Platform era, with

compute and storage capacity

moving to cloud, mobile and

Big Data-optimized hyper-

scaled data centers operated by

cloud service providers. The

report forecasted that this shift

will spark a burst of “cloud-

first” hardware innovations that

consolidate server, storage,

software and networking, lead-

ing to two or three major merg-

ers or acquisitions.

8. The 3rd Platformwill become industry-specialized: IDC pre-

dicted that 3rd platform

technologies will specialize into

industry-specific enterprise

platforms, doubling their

number in 2015. The company

mentioned examples such as

alternative payment networks in

financial services; expansion of

IoT technologies into city

safety, public works and trans-

portation systems; and the

expansion of location-based

services in the retail industry.

9. Security and 3Dprinting: IDC sees “3rd

Platform-optimized” security

solutions for the cloud, mobile

and Big Data as a growth sector

to secure these technologies,

with mechanisms including

biometrics on mobile devices

and encryption in the cloud, as

well as threat intelligence

emerging as an essential Data-

as-a-Service category of enter-

prise-specific threat

information. IDC also projected

that 3D printing will gain

traction in conventional docu-

ment printing companies, which

will come to fruition market-

wise in 2016.

10. Massive growthin China: China will expe-

rience skyrocketing influence

on the global ICT market in

2015, according to IDC, with

spending accounting for 43% of

all industry growth, a third of all

smartphone purchases on the

worldwide smartphone market,

and about one third of all online

shoppers. IDC predicted

China’s cloud and e-commerce

leaders such as ALIBABA,

Tencent and Baidu will become

global market powers.

Microsoft started the

WorldWide Tele-

scope (WWT) project in

2007, and the company has

now announced that it is

open sourcing the project.

The WWT project started

as a collaborative institu-

tional programme to visu-

alise the universe, and let

even laymen and hobbyists

explore the ‘multi-spectral

imagery’ for free.

Now, after eight years,

the scope ot the wwt mis-

sion is to be further ex-

panded by making it open

source so that more ways

can be explored to use all

the information in educa-

tional projects worldwide.

The programme has been

described as a fabulous

one, since it offers tutorials

on various related topics. If

you just right-click on a

constellation, galaxy or a

planet, you can access its

entire database, which in-

cludes information from

sources ranging from

wikipedia to astronomy en

cyclopedia.

These discus-

sions are de-

scribed as

‘ G u i d e d

Tours’, The programme

also narrates information

on stellar formation, the

detection of planets, etc.

Microsoft has advanced

a lot in terms of ‘openness’

in the last two years and

now this push to open

source the WWT project

makes its position stronger

in the open source commu-

nity. Last year, Microsoft

open sourced. NET, and it

is also producing an office

suite for Android and iOS.

CEO Satya Nadella has re-

alised the importance of

promoting such products,

which makes sense for

both the company and

consumers.

IT is too early to pre-

dict the future of

the WWT proj-

ect but if

you’re inter-

ested in

Mars im-

ages, pho-

tos of other

planets and a

virtual 3D tour of

the entire solar sys-

tem, then this is an

excellent option.

The programme

can be viewed via

a standalone ap-

plication and

also through

a browser.

It’s not

c e r t a i n

w h e n

exactly

the open source version of

the programme will be re-

leased as the company is

still working on its code

and features.

I feel grave concerned about

the stand of FAIITA where in the

companies have been given

enough time and opportunities to

get out of the situation. All though

none of them have provided the

required undertaking in the de-

sired format, all of them have

been given a cakewalk stating that

they are trying!!! On the grounds

of FAIITA we have not tried to ap-

proach government at central level

for the concern, only few people

in south presented a memorandum

to Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman, com-

merce minister of India, at their

personal level, which was a sen-

timental statement of an indi-

vidual. It can never appeal

someone in terms of business

ideology. This gives me a feel-

ing that FAIITA is not fighting

for a common cause in favor of

channel community, on the con-

trary, it has been supporting the

OEMs and their major partners

to not to suffer more and a safe

passage may be created for

them, so a special product range

can be introduced for OLS as

well as predatory price issue is

automatically subdued and

withdrawn.

FAIITA is to be formalized

on 15th of February at Banga-

lore. State leaders from all India

are meeting with an intension of

forming this Federation of All

India IT Associations which is

suppose to govern and advice

all India IT fraternity on the future

of our industry. I request them to

answer few questions to their

soles before formalization of FAI-

ITA and occupying posts:

1. Did FAIITA played a fair role

in fight against OLS?

2. Were safe passage created for

OEMs to protect interest of a

small bunch of people?

3. Did the agitation was called

off abruptly?

4. Would it have made a larger

impact to OEMs and would

have forced them to take a de-

cision in the favour of chan-

nel, if agitation would have

continued till month end?

5. Do you agree that communi-

cations with OEMs were

made public very late when

they could not influence the

final outcomes?

Kindly look within your

soles, are we politicians? Or we

are true and honest leaders fight-

ing for their communities sur-

vival? Let FAIITA be formed

with a mature call of surving the

community and not falling prey

to these MNCs who would al-

ways think for themselves only.

Wishing you a very happy

and prosperous 2015!

Google Drive now supports

the ODF file format

Google has surprised open

source enthusiasts with a

gift.The company has

finally announced its

support for the ODF for-

mat in its Drive suite of

application services.

This is great news for

open source enthusiasts

who had trouble sharing

ODF format files with their friends using the Mi-

crosoft Office suite.

Earlier, open source users had to export the docu-

ment in.doc or. docx to share the files with other

users. With ODF file support, Google is tapping the

category of users who might have been contemplat-

ing abandoning Google Drive services due to inter-

operability issues.

when the British government made ODF the de-

fault file format for government-related work,

Google service users had to ditch it and get an ODF-

supported office suite. Other European countries are

also adopting open source pretty rapidly. With such

a situation, Google ahd to start offering support for

the ODF file format with Google Drive. In short, it

was the UK government that created the demand for

ODF support.

A Linux-based gadget that charges

phones wirelessly up to 4.57 metres

Wattup is a Linux-based

device made by Ener-

gous, and it can charge mo-

bile devices wirelessly up to

4.57- metres (15-feet) by

using Wi-Fi beam-forming

technology. Launched at

CES 2015 in Las Vegas,

WattUp acts more like a Wi-

Fi router and uses the 5.7-

5.8GHz frequency bands,

just like Wi-Fi. It also uses

the 2.4 GHz Bluetooth Low

Energy (BLE) communica-

tion channel and can charge

more than one device simul-

taneously, even when the de-

vices are being used. During

peak hours, the device gives

more priority to handsets

than to TV remotes and cam-

eras. The accompanying

apps can be accessed from

remote locations too, and

they can be used to tweak

the priorities. The receiver

chips in WattUp convert the

radio waves into DC power

and if there is no authorised

device within the range, the

transmitter in the device

saves power. Compatible de-

vices include smartphones,

tablets, e-readers, smart-

watches, fitness trackers, re-

motes, home automation

sensors, lights and battery-

powered toys. Energous was

also a part of the 2015 CES

innovation Awards Honoree

list in categories like Smart

Home, Portable Power and

Embedded Technologies.

The devices will support

‘closed network’ environ-

ments as well as open net-

works.

E-Governance has

played a key role in

embarking the journey

to achieve the goal of

‘Minimum Government,

Maximum Governance’.

It has helped the Gov-

ernment to enhance the

coverage, increase

transparency, improve

response to citizens and

lower costs; on the other

hand has facilitated citi-

zens to have better ac-

cess, equity & social

empowerment.

With the advance-

ment of technology, e-

Governance has also

expanded its horizons in

the form of m-Gover-

nance which is fast be-

coming the preferred

mode of availing serv-

ices by the citizens. The

mobile technology has

provided a robust plat-

form for sustainable de-

velopment and inclusive

growth of the society as

a whole and proven to

be an effective media for

more connected society.

In contemporary times,

Social Media is being in-

creasingly used as a

medium to engage the

citizens with Govern-

ment in democratic

process, social reforms

and FINANCIAL inclu-

sion.

Thus, ICT is going to

be the propellant of the

growth engine which

has the potential to

transform India into a

knowledge–led econ-

omy and society espe-

cially when we are fast

adopting new para-

digms such as Internet

of Things, Smart Cities

etc. Today, India has

emerged as a Global IT

knowledge resource

empowering the whole

world. Spreading digital

literacy to rural citizens

across the country and

generating employment

opportunities in all ICT-

enabled industries will

be the next major leap

to transform young

India into a Digitally Em-

powered Society and a

knowledge economy.
