Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Rev. Jill Sander-Chali

We started a new sermon series on Sunday, September 29, called “Sacred Worth.” During this series, we are re-affirming our identity as a reconciling congregation that is committed to being in ministry with persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities. This series affirms that all are made in the image of God. The first Sunday, (Pride Sunday) we looked at the so-called "clobber" passages often used against inclusion of LGBTQ persons in church ministry. We unpacked the context and provided responses that help you turn the sword of scripture into a plough through prayerful and Spirit-filled interpretation. On Sunday, Oct. 6, we'll highlight the progress of LGBTQ+ rights around the world and share stories of LGBTQ+ persons from across the globe. We'll also celebrate world communion Sunday and the way that this ritual binds all Christians together, no matter where we are from. The final Sunday, October 13, we welcome guest preacher Rev. Elizabeth Evans who will bring us a message about our sacred worth in connection with National Coming Out Day celebrated on October 11. In addition, that afternoon at 4:00 pm, we are hosting a worship gathering in collaboration with several Wichita area churches focused around National Coming Out Day, acknowledging coming out as both a space of celebration and a space of lament. Rev. Elizabeth Evans will again be our guest preacher. We’ll follow that with a party in the fellowship hall…cupcakes, tie-dye t-shirts, rock painting, GLSEN, and Camp Sunflower!

CHUM Member

We wish to welcome Kolton Landreth to our CHUM Family. He joined the church

during the 10:15 Worship Service on Sunday, September 29. Kolton is 22 years old and spends his time working, studying, working more and enjoying time with his family and friends. He has been doing theater and singing since he was 14 years old. He owns his own business, Haus of Lane. It is a graphic design business for any apparel or merchandise you might wish to have for a special event or just for yourself. He is a Portuguese Education major at Oregon State University. Kolton has a dog named Louie who is his kiddo! His favorite Bible verse is Psalm 118:24, which is “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” His favorite word from the Bible is “Selah (say-la),” which means absolutely anything you want it to mean. Kolton says, “No one knows exactly what it means, I think that’s why I like it so much!” Be sure to welcome Kolton to our CHUM family when next you see him!

Meditation with Beth On Sunday, October 13, at 9:30am there will be a short meditation session in the Ward Chapel prior to the 10:15 Worship service. The leader will be Beth Ann Larson. Hope to see you there to relax prior to worship! Serve on a Church Committee Do you know someone with gifts for leadership in the church? We’re currently seeking applicants and nominations to serve on our various leadership teams next year. We are looking for leaders who take their commitment seriously to show up and be part of the work and leaders who can serve CHUM with joy. After you express your interest or share with us the name of someone who you think would do a great job, the Committee on Nominations and Lay Leadership (Nominations Team) prayerfully considers the needs of each team, their role in the church, and who might be the best fit for this year. The Nominations Team then personally invites individuals to accept an invitation to serve. Following their acceptance of the nomination, that slate is voted upon for election at our annual Church Conference meeting in November. Terms may be for 1-3 years and begin January 1, 2020. Email Pastor Jill if you are interested in serving or if you would like to nominate someone else to serve at: [email protected].

AGAPE, Rm. 201 - Hawley's will be hosting a potluck birthday celebration 10/19. See you in class Sunday!

BUILDERS, Rm. 305 - We are serving treats in th Parlor Sunday for Meet and Greet. Keep in your prayers: Charlie M., Nori, Mark McKee, and Bob & Mary Schmidt.

CHILDREN, Children’s Center - This past Sunday the kids started a new section on the Ten Commandments. Sunday, October 6, is Bible Presentation Sunday. Bibles will be handed out in both services and a lunch for recipients and their families will be at 11:30am in the Children’s Center

COMMON THREADS, Bride’s Room B14 @ 10:15 - Our topic for discussion was the Amazon Fires. We had a heartfelt conversation about the scope of the fires and the causes, as well as the short term and long term consequences. A special Thank You to Arlen Roberson for adding a lot of information and research and educating us all!

COMMUNICATORS, Rm. 301 - Much class discussion/concern regarding the newly approved decision to no longer hold weddings at CHUM. Mark your calendar: Monday, October 14 - pumpkin carving in our classroom at 5:00pm, and star gazing on October 22 or 24 - depending on the weather. Prayers: Trudy’s friend, Leslie Plunk; Caywood’s granddaughter, Tara; and Linda White.

CONTEMPORARY STUDIES, Rm. B5/7 - Last Sunday in September brought together eighteen, including Carole Shepherd's daughter, Shauna. Happy Birthday this week to Vicki Hitchcock and Carl Martin. Connie Morris helped Carl deliver flowers from his garden to share with the class. Keith Williamson was welcomed back to class. He and Vicki reviewed highlights of their trip with Communicators to Paris and London. Keith continued “Coming Off the Rails in Europe”...and with current events in United Methodist Church. Sunday, we will continue with Church Trials: Forced Departure.

DOUBLE CIRCLE, Rm. B4 - Don called the class of 11 together in Candy’s absence. Candy’s cousin passed away and our sympathy goes out to her and the family. The lesson by Dr. Brake was on Hebrews. To affirm that Jesus is God’s ultimate messenger to us. In those final days, He spoke to us through his son. God made his son the heir of everything and created the world through him (Hebrews 1:2). Hebrews acknowledged that God spoke to the people through a variety of messengers. He then proclaimed that Jesus is “so much greater than the other messengers.” (Hebrews 1:4) Jesus is in fact God’s ultimate messenger.

TRAVELING COMPANIONS, Bride’s Room B14 @ 11:15 am - Join us for discussion on spiritual development and personal growth.

VICEROY, Rm. B3 - We had a busy Sunday with lots going on. We began the book We Fed an Island by Jose Andres. We are listening to his telling of the story. We begin with the part of the Lord's Prayer, "Give us this day our daily bread." Welcome back to all those that were traveling.
