Chairman’s MessageJames K. Densmore, 2010 Chamber ChairmanParkland International Realty
I know all of you know the expression, “It’s not what you know, it’s whom you know.” It is an expression most of us can relate to on any given day. There are examples of it everyday in your personal or business life. When your child needs a job, they ask you because they know you know people who can help them. When you need a business referral, you call the Chamber to get one for the service or product you are seeking because we know businesses. When you need to learn the latest and greatest on ways to improve your business, you look to your Chamber to also help you. The reasons for that are twofold; 1) because we know who you need to know and 2) our strength in numbers (our membership size) gives us the influence to organize events to meet your business needs. The perfect example of our influence is the most impressive line up that the Small Business Development Committee has assembled for “Navigate Your Way to Success.” This dynamic workshop with experts in their fields of networking, marketing and sales on September 30th will showcase the talents of Lee Cockerell, Mary Tomlinson and Dawn and Joe Pici. Lee has worked around the world for Hilton Hotels Corporation, Marriott Hotels and The Walt Disney World Company. Mary also hails from Disney and now uses her expertise to get businesses on purpose and on track. Dawn and Joe are the co-authors of “Sell Naked on the Phone” & “Sell Naked in Person.” Those book titles alone should make you want to hear what they have to say. Thanks to our sponsors, Strombeck Consulting, Bright House Network Business Solution and Best Cleaners; the four hour workshop is free to Chamber members. Visit our Web site for more details. Another note of thanks is also in order. The Nominating Committee headed up by our Chairman-elect, Michael Waldrop recently met to discuss open seats for the 2011 Board of Directors. They presented their recommendation to the Chamber board this month and those results will be released in October. I want to thank Michael, Diane Trees, David Sylvester, Lynette Reynolds, Bob Hennen and Michael LaPorte for taking the time to work on this very important committee for our Chamber.
MEMBER TO MEMBER TESTIMONIAL
Aggressive Appliances did a great job on repairing my oven. After an unpleasant experience with another company, they stepped in quickly and kept me informed every step of the way during the process. They even found parts to an oven that was discontinued. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a pro to do the work.

Amendment 4 would bring ballots from hell by Matt ReedSource: Florida Today - August 22, 2010
Voters will decide in November whether all changes to comprehensive growth plans for cities and counties should be put to a public vote. Amendment 4 would give everyday people vast new power over developers and property owners.
But how would you vote -- or would you bother? -- if your ballot included an item like this:
“An ordinance of the city of West Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida, adopting comprehensive plan amendment No. 2007-1; Amendment the future land-use map of the comprehensive plan of the city to provide for low density residential, single-family dwellings use for a certain parcel of land newly annexed into the city and lying to the southwest 1/4 of section 13, township 28 south, range 36 east, Brevard County, Florida, being a part of “Addition No. 3 to June Park” according to the plat thereof, as recorded in plat book 4, page 74, of the public records of Brevard County, Florida; located on the west side of Minton Road approximately 3,900 feet from the Minton road right of way, south interstate 95, and north of Hield Road.”
“Yes/no”That mind-numbing paragraph is real text from an ordinance for a real proposed change to one Space Coast city’s comprehensive growth plan. Now, multiply that item by 30 if you live in unincorporated Brevard County or 40 if you live in a city. That’s the number of growth-plan amendments you would be asked to decide at your polling place or on your absentee ballot every other year, even during recessions. “Our ballots would be pages and pages,” Supervisor of Elections Lori Scott told me Friday. You up for that? Too much democracy?
Supporters of Amendment 4, also known as Hometown Democracy, say the measure will tame future sprawl and break Florida’s cycle of boom and bust. The Yes On 4 website refers to Florida as the “Ponzi State.”
Opponents -- including nearly every business, city hall and Chamber of Commerce -- say it will stymie Florida’s recovery and economic growth. Nearly every development faces some sort of neighborhood political opposition. Regardless of your take, we face a lot of voting and slow, expensive elections if Amendment 4 passes. City councils on the Space Coast averaged fewer changes. For example, Melbourne and Titusville averaged seven comp-plan amendments a year. Rockledge averaged three annually.
Still, that’s enough to make your ballot read like a mortgage-closing packet.
Multiply costsNo one wants another bubble. But let’s be clear about what we’re getting into as voters with Amendment 4. Costs would vary with the number of amendments. But Scott said multiplying the number of pages of Brevard’s optical-scan ballots also means multiplying:
• Printing and postage costs • Time for counting ballots • Ballot-security gear, including special ballot bags • Auditing and canvassing work. The alternative? Trust your elected officials to do the research and make hard decisions, then vote them out if they steer your city or county in the wrong direction.
That seems like an easier yes/no decision.

JOIN. MEET. GROW.
The Chamber Team is keeping an eye out on local issues so that we may keep you informed on issues of local and regional importance. Here is what we kept an eye on in August:
Pine Hills Business Redevelopment Task Force Update by Susan Fortini
• Real Estate Research Consultants, (Tom Kohler, Principal) has been hired to develop the strategic plan and conduct market analysis of Pine Hills.
• The strategic planning is well underway and will include a vision, objectives, strategies and an action plan (short, mid and long term) to revitalize key commercial areas in Pine Hills.
• The Task Force is now meeting bi-weekly at the Hiawassee Library.
• A series of Neighborhood meetings have been held to solicit input from residents and business owners.
• Surveys have also been distributed to residents and businesses. The research will focus on three key commercial corridors; West Colonial between Pine Hills and Hiawassee Roads, Pine Hills Road between Silver Star and W. Colonial and Silver Star Road, between Pine Hills and Hiawassee.
• A new logo and tagline have been developed "Pine Hills on the Rise."
• The task force is focused on effective neighborhood connections within the Pine Hills community, particularly examining connections between Barnett Park and the businesses at Silver Star and Pine Hills.
• A Task Force update was presented to the Orange County Commissioners on Aug. 31, 2010.
Community Leaders Open Forum with Senator Bill Nelson at city of Winter Garden City Hall – Stina D’Uva, Krista Carter, Chairman Jim Densmore and other board members attended a forum hosted by US Senator Bill Nelson. He spoke to a group of invited community leaders on plans for the space coast, oil drilling ban off the coast of Florida and the 1099 requirement currently in the healthcare reform bill. He has drafted an amendment that would reduce the burden to businesses currently imposed in the language of the recently adopted legislation. This amendment will be discussed by the US Senate when it convenes in September.
Highway 50 Stakeholders Meeting – Stina D’Uva, Krista Carter, Chairman Jim Densmore, and Board members Commissioner Scott Boyd, and Rob Frank attended this meeting, State Representative Steve Precourt with the assistance of the Chamber convened representatives from FDOT, MetroPlan Orlando and Oakland, Ocoee, Winter Garden officials and business leaders to discuss the timing of construction of all sections of Highway 50 in West Orange. The goal was to confirm the schedule of all sections and get reassurance that sections would no longer be delayed. The section from 429 to Avalon Road is scheduled to be completed by mid 2011. The section from West Oaks Mall to
the 429 has the longest completion date which is 2015, as well as the section from Avalon Road to Oakland. For complete information and updates, please visit cflroads.com.
Northwest Regional Board of Advisors – Stina D’Uva is a member and facilitator of this board. The West Orange and South Lake Chambers are working in partnership with myregion.org to assist in developing strategies on regional issues. The board is made up of municipal and business leaders from Oakland, Ocoee, Winter Garden, Apopka, Tavares, Howie-in-the-Hills, Minneola, Mt. Dora, Sumterville, Clermont and Leesburg. The second meeting of the group was devoted to an examination of input on the Best Practice Recommendations from the Water Resources Strategy Workshop conducted by myregion.org and the Urban Land Institute. The group will convene once again in December
with the other five regional boards to discuss another regional topic, “Connecting for Global Competitiveness.”
Florida Association of Chamber Professional’s (FACP) Regional Meeting – Stina D’Uva, a board member of FACP attend this regional meeting. The main topic of discussion was on the expanding role of Florida as an “exporting” state. The group heard from Manuel Mencia, Senior Vice President of International Trade & Business Development for Enterprise Florida on this growing segment of our economy. Here are just a few facts from his presentation:
• More than 48,000 Florida companies export, accounting for 18% of all US exporters.
• The number of Florida exporters has grown by 53% since 2003, rising from 31, 400 to more than 48,000 in 2007.
• More than 95% of Florida exporters are small and medium-sized businesses.
For more information, visit www.eflorida.com. Learn how you may be able to expand your business to the international sector.
If you are already exporting, get your company listed in the first of its kind, an online directory brought to you by Enterprise Florida and The Export Yellow Pages. Is Social Media a FAD?– NO, it is a fundamental shift in how we communicate!
Did you know in the United States alone there are 250 million active Facebook users with the fastest growing segment being woman between 55 and 65 years old? Half of Facebook users will spend 55 minutes a day online. 80% of corporations use Linkedin for recruiting new talent. If Facebook were a country it would be the 4th largest in the world. U-Tube is the 2nd largest website in the world behind Google. Many universities are no longer using e-mail to communicate with their students but are now communicating with them through their social media accounts. The WOCC August Lunch and Learn focused on who, what, why and how of Social Media Marketing and was presented by Patrick Lewis of Social eVolution Media.
Patrick Lewis guided a full house on social media marketing and how to utilize it to stay in front of past, present and future clients. The presentation included information on the top three social media sites; Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter, how they operate and their demographic groups. Attendees received training on the development of Facebook Business Pages and discussed the importance of data base marketing and how to stay in touch with past clients.
Thank you to JoAnne Quarles of Treasure Title for sponsoring this incredible timely and informative educational event and a special thank you to Patrick Lewis for his demonstration on how to shift to the most effective and efficient mode of connecting, promoting and communicating through social media marketing.
