Kappa Phi August Planning Meeting
Date: Thursday, August 21, 2014
Time: 5:30-8:30
Place: Betty Shaw’s (Nancy Shaheen's mom)
14466 Valley Hi Circle, Farmers Branch, TX
Bring: Salad of Choice
Program Planning!
We are still in the early stages of planning programs, and
your ideas will be solicited at our first gathering on Aug. 21.
We know that supporting Strickland Elementary is important
to many of you, and we will be asking the principal how we
can best support the campus needs. Other ideas that we are
considering include Show-n-Tell, Public School vs. Charter
School, and another adventure to the Meadows Museum at
SMU!
Sept. 4 would be our first regular meeting. Why? Remember
our president has been asking your opinion about changing
our meeting dates? The first Thursday of the month is a
strong contender for new meeting nights, so come prepared to
discuss that change on Aug. 21. See you at Betty’s!
Greetings to all! I am now writing to you as the 2014-
2016 President. The title was officially bestowed on
me at the 85th State Convention in Lubbock, which was
attended by 806 members. Nancy Shaheen and I
roomed together and not only had a great time, but we
brought back some fresh, new ideas for our chapter.
A major focus of the Texas State Organization is
building membership, which is the heart of our
organization. We are being encouraged to look beyond
the borders of public education to non-traditional
fields in order to find new and energetic members.
Some suggestions include: non-profit organization
education directors, park rangers, museum education
staff, Christian education directors, professional
development personnel, school nurses, city department
trainers, child care center directors, health educators,
county extension agents and the list goes on.
I was impressed with the positive attitude and the
energy that I saw at the convention. There are
tremendous opportunities for personal growth,
leadership development and even travel within our
organization. I would like for all of us to consider this
question “Why do you continue to stay in DKG?”
Hopefully the answers to this question will make us
want to go out and find energetic educators who would
also like to enjoy the benefits that we have as
members of Kappa Phi.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you at Betty
Shaw’s house on August 21st as we kick off a new year
with a salad supper, a discussion of plans for the year,
and lots of fun! Debbie

Officers Planning Meeting
New officers met at Debbie’s home in July and

She reminded us of the Fall Workshop fee of $12 with a
sign-up sheet passed around by incoming President,
Debbie Moss.
Nancy Shaheen gave the report on the Global Awareness
Committee. She passed around a “school bus” to collect
donations for World Fellowship. Nancy added that all
members world-wide can connect at epal-goo.gl/7dx.YVP.
Further description is given in the Lone Star newsletter.
Debbie Moss announced she will be organizing an officers
meeting to plan for next year. She encouraged us all to
attend the Area 9 Workshop. She also sent around a sign-
up sheet for committee assignments for the next biennium.
Debbie thanked Vicky Herr for her dedicated service as
President for the last 2 years.
PROGRAM:
Dorothy Carroll presented the program for Founder’s Day. Members
read a description of each of the founding members by offering a
beautiful red rose with each answer given. Next we played an “I
Spy” game by correctly naming the founders by their personal
descriptions.
Barbara Taylor presented retiring President, Vicky Herr, with a
bouquet of a dozen red roses and Dorothy Carroll gave Vicky a nice
Wine Glass in appreciation from the chapter members.
Vicky thanked each of the officers and Committee Chairpersons for

Global Awareness Update
First of all, I want thank each of you for your contribution to
Global Awareness. We are sending $82 to DKG! Thank you
for your generosity!
I attended the state convention in Lubbock this past June.
It was great fun, inspiring and informative. I was part of a
presentation given by the State Global Awareness Committee.
My part had to do with presenting information about Schools for
Africa which is DKG International Project in partnership with
UNICEF. Our focus is in helping the most disadvantaged
children in 13 countries with emphasis in the following areas:
Early childhood development
Access to quality primary, lower secondary and non-
formal education; retention
HIV prevention and schools
Education and emergency
Schools for Africa are only part of Global Awareness. World
Fellowship, Committee on Teaching about United Nations
(CTAUN), Teach in China is also part of it.
I will be presenting the entire Global Awareness program
at Area 9 workshop in September. I hope you will be there! If
not, you'll be receiving information at our meetings with some
fun games!!
See you on August 21st!! Nancy Shaheen
Future Meetings
Remember the Survey that
Debbie sent asking members had
a conflict with the 1st or the 4th
