Pastor’s Blog 9/11, ten years later – – – So What?

Tomorrow is 10 years of infamous 9/11. I still remember where I was on that Tuesday morning at 9:30 watching burning towers and then first one collapsing at 10 am – I was at a wedding chapel in Niagara Falls arranging for a wedding of a couple to be done the next day. The passage from the Gospel of Matthew 24:37-38 came to mind "But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage.”

The very next summer of 2002 we moved to Andrews University to continue education. That summer enrolment in the Seminary doubled. Many professionals left their careers for ministry. The world’s stability was shattered and people viewed it as another sign of end time events. Now, a decade after the “sky had fallen,” I am asking myself this question: is the urgency and commitment to work as if there is no tomorrow still alive?

National Security is on alert for possible threats again in the cities that were targeted in 2001. Are, Christian believers, on high alert and alarmed for safety and salvation of people around us? Do we understand that it is God who contains world skirmishes? Do we appreciate that the Holy Spirit’s presence restrains destroying powers? Do we use the time of peace, while the angels hold back winds of strife, to do the work for people who would perish without Christ?

Shawn Boonstra had written a very interesting article in the latest Adventist Review, indicating the confusion that exists today among Christian churches. “Much of the evangelical world, having abandoned a sound historical approach to Bible prophecy, has gone searching for an antichrist who is “other.” The identity of the beast of Revelation shifts on almost a monthly basis—from a European dictator, to a computer system in Belgium, to a Middle East tyrant, to the American president himself—who carries a traditionally Muslim name,”- he writes. Seventh-day Adventists, in contrast, have not changed our message. And with passing of time our interpretation of Biblical eschatology proves to be more and more accurate. Do we have courage to challenge other Christians to return to the Biblical basics?

What would it take for us to be revived, awakened, moved into action? Next week, at the Communion Table I plan to introduce our whole congregation to the Radical Experiment – trying to live the Truth to prove to ourselves, to test promises, to discover God at work. Have you read the WHOLE Bible? From cover to cover in a year? Have you prayed for the whole world, for every country by name? Have you considered the Great Commission for which we are dispatched by Christ – to GO into ALL the WORLD? Come with humility, praying for others next Sabbath.

See you at the Table!

In service of the Great Shepherd, pastor Alex Golovenko
