LO : 1 & LO : 3/UNIT:1

28th April,2008, My first day at Frankfinn, I came to the institute as a person within the closed doors, with cowardly and diffident nature. When I begin to understand the importance of personality development, I started to percept the strengths and weakness in myself. I strongly believe in my qualities which I posses and will work towards confrontation of my weakness to change it to my strength.

FACTORS TO DEVELOP PERSONALITY PERSISTENCE

During the assignment I observed that the old age home Management was approaching government for funds from past 5years. Eventhough they haven’t got any positive results from the concerned, they are continuing the approach with much confidence

Through this I realized that I should work hard to compile the discipline of consistency, tenacity and endurance.

Page 8: Self Development

EMPATHY : imaginative experiencing

I observed my friend Wasim talking to an old lady, Ms.Parvathi, who understands and react to the speech very slowly. By observing that he asked questions & always waited for her answer patiently.

I realized that by empathizing in situations

wherever required, we can understand people and it would be a helpful tool for me to achieve sustained relationships and thereby to success .

Page 9: Self Development

RATIONALITY : logical thinking I observed that my team mate Vijay had

a severe leg sprain at the day we have to visit the old age home. As the visit is pre-planned, we couldn’t cancel the visit too, but he in spite of his pain joined us by taking the decision logically.

To be successful in life, some decisions have to be taken logically and reasonably to win in life.

Page 10: Self Development

LEARNING & KNOWLEDGE: Journeys in Personal development I observed a person Mr.Baskaran at the old age home. He used to read books at most of the time. When I started talking to him he discussed about almost everything under the sky with good knowledge and he was keen to get the information which he lacks from me too. I found the quest in learning and adding knowledge in him.

I realized that learning is weapon and knowledge is power. It is a growing self-reliant self image. I will also build up the quest to learn and the gain knowledge.

Page 11: Self Development

ATTITUDE : Introspective viewpoint I met a farmer named Mr. Kesavan at the old

age home, who has lost almost everything in life. He was a successful farmer at the beginning, but suffered a great loss in agriculture later on. He was not ready to find a solution for the failure and blamed the nature and financial aids from the govt. for the same.

On hearing the words of the resident, I realized the influence of attitude, especially the negative attitude in life. The main route to success and development , and especially to failure is through attitude, which I realized can be changed accordingly.

Page 12: Self Development

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: managing and guiding emotions I observed an old lady named Mrs.Meenakshi,

who have won over the emotional intelligence. She has lost all of her family in an accident and is

the only survivor of the family. Eventhough she has all the pain in her mind, she is seen happily walking around the old age home, becoming the favorite of all the other residents. She has overcome the sadness in life and has learnt to view and enjoy the life in harmony.

I realized on seeing her that one can have control over their emotions and enjoy the ultimate harmony of life if you have the mindset to overthrow the emotions.

Page 13: Self Development

PERCEPTION : Intellectual Game

During the visit I was observing my team mate Loganath, who is short- tempered by nature, was involving with the old people in a modest way. I was shocked on seeing this, as I know that he will get anger for each and everything.

I realized that everyone can alter the dynamics of perception and convert negative perceptions to positive perceptions

Page 14: Self Development

MOTIVATION : For better performance

I observed my team member,Rahul, prompting himself to help the people who is serving food. This action of him stimulated us also to help them with serving the food, which the residents too liked it.

I realized that one can be a self motivator. It is not necessary that every time there will be someone to motivate us. If you have a ‘can-do’ attitude, we can reach the top of the world.

QUALITIES TO LEAD A TEAM Leadership denotes the ability to lead

people to attain success. The qualities required for the same are :

Setting objective : Once we got the project topic, I understood that the objective of the work is to analyze people.

Organizing & planning: I with my team members collected details of the old age homes in Palakkad, selected one home, received permission to visit the place from authorities, and decided to visit the same on July 13, 08.

Decision Making : I with my team members discussed and finalized to visit an old age home as it is the harbor of senior citizens

Page 16: Self Development

Integrity & Honesty: As far as this assignment is concerned, I did my work with honesty.Enthusiasm : I was fully enthusiastic to meet people and spend valuable time with our senior citizens.Ambition : I had an ambition to meet our senior most citizens, and get the experiences from them.Intelligence : Before the visit to Karunya trust, I made me well informed about the character, behaviour, attitude of old people so as to understand them more.Emotional stability : Some people was getting irritated on our presence and answering our doubts, which in turn increased my temper. Immediately, I became calm.

Page 17: Self Development

Empathy : I understood on talking with the old people that I should think & react at their level so as to know more from them.Human Relations & People skills : This is the area I personally think I should improve a lot. I was struggling to get with the people there in the old age home, eventhough I did better with my team.Objectivity : Even I had to face lot of struggles in getting permission to visit the Karunya trust from the authorities concerned, I set my objectivity to visit the place at any cost.Motivating skills : I motivated my team members during the visit as they were tensed on what to do there in the old age home.

Page 18: Self Development

Technical skills : I did this work with almost perfect perfection, knowing well about my job in the teamCommunication skills : As I was mingling with old people, I need to show more patience. I interacted with them politely and slowly, listened their speech and gathered as much information I can.Social skills : I was friendly, humble and honest with the people I interacted during this work. I strongly believe that if one understands the above 15 qualities in a proper manner, and do the hard work to achieve whatever qualities he lacks in him, one can be a great personality to reach heights. I understand that I am one of the representative who can make the people enlighten about their strengths and weakness with the knowledge I possess.

THE PERSON I OBSERVED

• Name : Keshavan• Age : 60yrs• Occupation : Farmer • Marital status : Married• Two daughters, one married , one pursuing degree & his wife

expired last year.

Page 20: Self Development

Mr.Kesavan was so sad when we met him. He was the resident of the old age home since a year. The chairman of the old age home told that Mr.Kesavan is a reserved person and he is very much depressed of what has happened to his life. He was typical farmer who owned acres of land where he has made every types of crops in the seasons. He was a happy man with his family. Every step in his agriculture was success. He was a socially respected person.

Page 21: Self Development

Gradually the agricultural sector begin to decline and Kesavan suffered intangible losses in his work. He could not accept what has happened to him, his wife’s death, daughters questioning his activities etc. He blamed the nature and improper financial aids from govt. He became a social nuisance soon . When I met Mr.Kesavan,he was mentally disturbed. He was the shadow of his past.

Page 22: Self Development

From this case study, let us analyze the factors in which Kesavan has to improve. According to my understanding, he should improve his :

Perception Attitude Rationality Persistence Learning & Knowledge Motivation

Page 23: Self Development

I strongly believe that the reason for Mr.Kesavan’s depressed personality is due to his lacking of confidence and motivation. One another reason is lack of support from his family members and common people too. If he had got better support from his family and if he had consulted with a person who would have given guidance to him in his decline, he would not be in such a situation now.

The major threat in converting his weakness to his strength is his willingness to co operate with the proper guidance given to him.

LO:2/UNIT:1TIME MANAGEMENT

As the proverb states, time and tide waits for none. So utilization of time must be done in the perfect manner.

The other word for time management is punctuality.

Time can be utilized efficiently by: Tackling the tasks: tackle the highly

important/urgent tasks first Compiling the required steps to fulfill the tasks :

setting deadlines for the completion of highly important tasks to make it as a daily routine

Utilizing the available resources in an efficient manner, i.e. finding quick ways to solve the highly urgent tasks with less personal involvement

Page 25: Self Development

Utilizing the available resources in an efficient manner, i.e. finding quick ways to solve the highly urgent tasks with less personal involvementCompleting the task within the set time period : the effortless low urgency work can be done every week taking less time and complete the work in set period.

If an individual follows the above principles while doing a work or assignment, he can be a better planner in terms of Time management.

Page 26: Self Development

TIME MANAGEMENT IN OUR ACTIVITY

Time, the most precious thing, which we never afford to lose. It is important to manage the time in an efficient way while doing a time-set assignment. We, as a team, managed the time very effectively by doing the work with co-ordination and co-operation.

On July 13, ’08 we planned to visit Karunya old age home at Palakkad. We had a strict time limit for each and every work to be done there. The pre-planned decisions were:

Reach the Karunya home at 9.00am

Page 27: Self Development

Conversation with chairman to understand about the home for 30 minutesMingle with the old people till lunchproviding lunch at 12 noonLeave the old age home at 2pm

Obviously whatever planned has been gone wrong right from the beginning. As we have a basic knowledge about Time management, we changed the plan accordingly with time. So we changed the decisions as:reducing the conversation time with chairman to 15 minuteswith the basic idea about the residents from the head, we spoke with the residents till lunchAfter lunch, we left the place at 3.30pm

Page 28: Self Development

BARRIERS:

We reached the trust little late than the planned time due to high traffic.

As medical camp was going on there, we lost another half an hour

Non-cooperation of the residents at old age home.

Delay of organized food due to improper transportation of food by the catering people.

Page 29: Self Development

Solving the issues

The barriers never distracted us from our objective. In spite of inefficient time utilization, we made time to speak with the residents in an effective way.

As quoted earlier, all the time allotted in the pre-planned decisions were changed accordingly with the situations without emotionally distracting the residents and authority

Though the organized food reached the trust late, we utilized the time to talk with the residents without making irritation to them in that lunch time

Page 30: Self Development

Efficient time manager in our team I noticed that during the assignment work my teammate Rahul, managed the time efficiently:

He was punctual arriving the targeted place before 15 minutes.

He was talking politely with the residents within a time-grid & also made us to spend the time likewise.

He was the one who gave an idea to reduce the conversation with chairman so as to spend more time with residents.

Page 31: Self Development

Comparison on saving time

As I quoted, Rahul was the efficient time manager in our team. I could have managed time efficiently if:

I could have been punctual, reaching the place before 10minutes, as I know the route clearly.

I could have prepared a questionnaire the before day itself to reduce the time in making it on-time

Page 32: Self Development

LO 4 :/UNIT 1OPEN SELF PERSONALITY : interpersonal behaviour People skills are essential for success in

todays competitive environment. Being an ‘open-self personality’ is very

much important in service industry, where one have to be an open-self.

To become an ‘open-self’, one must be willing to change, share the feelings and values with others

Firstly, we have to know ourselves, build strong & positive relationships, value time,& be proactive. All these ingredients mixed with a smiling face will create a respected personality.

Page 33: Self Development

I strongly believe that I posses most of those positive aspects to be an open-self excluding the proactive nature.

I plan to change myself in changing my introvert nature by socially grooming with different people, compiling myself with the habits of help, guiding, contribute, encourage etc. I hope that I will be successful in my effort to become proactive soon and I will become a perfect personality.
