Auburn vs. Louisiana‐Monroe

Pat Dye Field at Jordan Hare Stadium

Auburn, Ala. | Sept. 15, 2012

Gene Chizik Quotes

Auburn Head Coach Gene Chizik

Opening Statement…

“That was a very good team. We watched tape on them, and we told our team that they were going to

play down to the end. I’m proud of our football team. I’m very proud of our football team. It all came

down to the end of the game. We came up with three very important stops. We are going to look back

at this game and point to our corrections that were pretty glaring that we need to make, but there are

some positives in the game, too. I feel like we ran the ball a little better today. We ran the ball for well

over 200 yards which was a goal of ours. We have to be able to get off the field on third downs, and that

is why they ran close to 90 plays. But, you know what? I am proud of the guys in the locker room. They

fought together. They hung together. It wasn’t always pretty, but we beat a good football team today so

it is something to build on, and we will continue to do that tomorrow. Go back to work, and we have a

great challenge next week, but we are going to enjoy this one today. Again, I am proud of those young

men in the locker room because the bottom line is we got our first victory, and we got it at home. So,

that was a good thing. Again, we have a lot of work to do, and we will learn a lot from this tape as we

move forward.”

On turning the ball over at the 5‐yard line when it looked like Auburn was about to take over the game…

“There were several things today in the game that I thought were turning points in the game. You go in

and you punch that ball in at the 1‐yard line and now it is a three touchdown game, and I think it is a

whole different ballgame. That definitely swung momentum in their direction. The interception that we

threw at that one point late third or early fourth, not sure when that was, but the interception, that was

a turning point as well. We had a chance to get off the field on third down, and we had a guy jump

offsides so there are some turning points in the game right now that really are very disappointing. But,

again, at the end of the day, we have to look at some of the positives that we did. Some guys came

through, but those were a couple of the swinging points in the game.”

On the decision to kick the field goal in the overtime on second down…

“We wanted to run it. We were going to run it a couple of times to see if we could get anywhere. Our

landmark is anywhere from the 23‐yard line in, and we feel very confident with Cody (Parkey) being able

to kick it from there. And so, the first one we gained enough yards to feel comfortable to just center the

ball and end it. He’s been perfect in practice. He’s been perfect in the games. We feel very comfortable

putting him in with the game on the line with our special teams and winning it.”

Do you feel like you dodged an upset against ULM…

“You can view it any way you want to view it, but that is going to be up to you. I view it as a great win

against a very good football team because every win in college football is a good win. That’s how we see

it.”

On Kiehl Frazier’s performance…

“I think he protected the ball better. Obviously, the one interception, we would like to have back but

you look at the long throw to Sammie (Coates), and the touchdown early in the game, it’s a great throw

and catch. It got called back. Again, that is another sloppy penalty that we had, but he threw that ball

really, really well. I think he played better. I think he managed the game for the most part doing what

we needed him to do to manage the game, throwing the ball, getting rid of the ball when he had to,

scrambling when he had to, making some big throws, one right before halftime when he had to. So

again, there are going to be a lot of things that he could play better at, but he did some things tonight

that can move him in the right direction.”

On needing to have more confidence in Kiehl Frazier in the fourth quarter…

“I think we have to be able to get to that, and we know that. That’s not always based on the

quarterback. You have to see how your line is protecting. If you are going to throw the ball in the fourth

quarter, you are going to be aggressive. It is about your receivers. It’s about your protection with the O‐

line and your running backs as well as the quarterback. So, it is not that we have to get into the fourth

quarter and Kiehl has to do X, Y and Z. It’s we have to get better as an offense, and we have to be able to

be comfortable enough in those situations to be able to open it up if that is what we need to do.”

On Auburn blocking two field goal attempts…

“I think that really goes back to what I am talking about with guys playing down to the end. Again, it

wasn’t always pretty. They drove it down and got into field goal range the first time, and we get the

huge block in overtime. DeAngelo (Blackson) is the one. I couldn’t tell if he was the one who got his hand

on it. Again, that is just effort. Those are effort plays, and that is why those are the things we are going

to be able to point back to and be able to say that that is the effort that we need to have to win a close

game. So, those are the things that I am proud of.”

On the team manning up…

“Again, when I talk about that, I am talking about the whole week. I’m talking about preparing from last

Sunday on. I’m talking about getting ready to get into a dogfight of a game and be able to fight down to

the end to win it, and they did that. So, you can call it manning up. You can call it whatever you want.

I’m very proud that last Sunday we came out to work and we put our heads down, and we moved

forward trying to improve and again it resulted in a very close game tonight, but a win.”

On Onterio McCalebb’s performance…

“I think he ran for (128) yards tonight. It is really good to see him. He is kind of doing what everybody

said he couldn’t do. He is able to run it up in there a little bit more than people thought he would be

able to because he wants to do it. As you well know, when he gets out in the open field, he has a lot of

speed so he has a chance to be a game‐breaker, but I am proud of him for being able to run between the

tackles. Again, that is not what everybody would be his forte, and he still has great opportunities to get

on the perimeter as well, but I am proud of him. He played hard tonight, and he is productive in every

game. Every game we play, he is always doing something productive. Last week with the kickoff return

for a touchdown, and this week with what he did. So, I am proud of him.”

On getting your first win and building confidence heading into the LSU game next week…

“I think it is extremely important. It is not news to anybody. We have a great football team coming in to

play next week. We have to improve, but it was big to get the win. Wins are great, and so we needed

one, and we got one.”

On the importance of getting the victory for Kiehl Frazier’s development…

“I think it is big for everybody, but particularly for Kiehl. Kiehl made some nice throws tonight. Kiehl is

going to look back at that tape tomorrow. We are going to dissect it in great detail, and try to figure out

he can improve for next week, but the bottom line is that Kiehl didn’t win or lose this game. Just like he

didn’t win or lose last week’s game. We all either win or we all lose. So, tomorrow we will all see how

much we have improvement‐wise to make, and we will see what we did well. We all will, but for Kiehl,

himself, he managed the game. He managed the game. He did some nice things tonight.”

On hugging Kiehl Frazier after the touchdown pass at the end of the first half…

“I am proud of him. He is a young guy. So, that is just the fact of the matter. Anytime he gets some

success, I am extremely happy for him, and that was something that with seven seconds left in the half,

and we are a little bit out of field goal range, we said let’s take the shot. He escaped everything. He

stumbled a little bit, threw it up and Sammie (Coates) made a great play. That is just great seeing young

guys having fun doing that. I was really happy for him.”

On the momentum swings in the game…

“Yes, it is big, and again, those swings in the game, we have been on the other side of those. But, it is

just good to see us be able to do that when we went down early, and we were able to come back. Those

are the things that again as we move forward and build, those are the things that we are going to be

able to look back on and say, ‘Hey, look’ and we just kept playing and kept playing. So those things

matter because like I said, we have been on the other end of that, too.”

Auburn Player Quotes

RB Onterrio McCalebb

On today’s game…

“I thought we played well. We fought until the end, and came out with a win.”

On his fourth career 100‐yard game…

“Coach Loeffler called great plays. The offensive line and wide receivers blocked their tails off.”

On his 27‐yard run…

“The offensive line ran to the left and I just followed Jay Prosch. Jay is a heck of a blocker. He took out

the man in front of me and I was able to score.”

On getting the first win of the season…

“I think it is big, because it gives us lots of momentum heading into LSU next weekend.”

RB Tre Mason

On today’s game…

“We played a really good team today. We knew that they were going to fight until the end. We knew we

had to pull together and fight until the end with them. I think we got the job done today.”

On the team’s rushing efforts…

“As an offense, we feel like no one can stop us in the redzone. Hopefully we can get this train going and

get into the endzone.”

On the team getting its first win of the season…

“It is a big win, but we are going to right back to work. We have to prepare for a tough game next week,

but it is nice to get the first win of the season under our belts.”

K Cody Parkey

On his game‐winning field goal…

“Honestly it felt like practice. The offense did a great job getting some yards on the first play of the

drive. It was an easy kick for me. It was right down the middle. It couldn’t have gone any better.”

On the team’s first win…

“It is huge. We knew we couldn’t leave here with a loss. It was big for us to get the win, no matter how it

looked.”

QB Kiehl Frazier

On today’s game…

“It was just good to go out there and get a win. We had two tough losses to start the year, so it is good

to get a win heading into the LSU game.”

On the team’s first win…

“We have a lot of young guys on this team, so hopefully we can keep this feeling going.”

On his 33‐yard touchdown reception…

“It was a great play call. Quan (Bray) made a great play, even though he had to scramble a little bit. It

worked like we thought it would.”

DE Corey Lemonier

On today’s game…

“It’s great to have our first win. Louisiana‐Monroe came out and fought hard but we fought harder. We

are going to look at our mistakes this week and prepare for LSU.”

On overtime defense…

“We really gutted up when it came down to it. I’m proud of the way we played, I’m proud of all of my

teammates.”

On his third‐quarter field goal block…

“The guy blocking me went to Kris (Frost) and so I just came through clean.”

DT Angelo Blackson

On blocking field goal in overtime…

“I got a hand on it, I got a piece of it. Coach said it was going to come down to the end of the game,

maybe a field goal. I just wanted to get pressure and get my hands up.”

On blocking two field goals so far this season...

“I’m just doing my job. I try to get to the line and get my hands up.”

On the defense…

“We made plays when we had to. We are not a perfect defense, we had some mistakes but we just have

to learn from them and get things right for next week.”

On defending a mobile quarterback…

“He’s a good runner so we emphasized making him a passer. We tried to keep him contained and tried

collapsing the pocket. We did that for the most part but he did get out sometimes. He’s a playmaker so

we tried to keep his big plays to a minimum and make him play quarterback.”

LB Daren Bates

On today’s game…

“Everybody played hard. We tried to keep our intensity up. They played us hard but we matched them.”

On leading team in tackles…

“I think I played alright, but it’s a team game. The offense and the defense have to come out and

perform together to win games.”

On overtime defense…

“We just came out and played hard. Coach Van Gorder talks to us all the time about being focused and

making plays in key moments.”

On defending a mobile quarterback…

“You have to stay in coverage and the defensive linemen just have to keep him contained. It comes

down to executing.”

Head Coach Todd Berry

Opening Statement…

“We’re really proud of our kids, obviously. They keep battling back. There’s a lot of things that we have

to overcome when you’re on the road and you’re playing against some very, very good athletes, some

very good coaches and a great tradition. We keep battling. Obviously, would’ve liked for this one to

come out different. It’s on me, all the way on me. I did not manage this game as well as what I needed

to, and so this is my fault. I wish I could have it over obviously for the kids’ sake, but I think this group’s

got a lot of character and they’ll battle back. We came out of it relatively healthy and in terms of injuries

I won’t know anything probably until tomorrow in relation to one of the injuries.”

On quarterback Kolton Browning...

“I don’t know if we got him as involved as what we should have. We kept him a little bit more involved

in the Arkansas game and I think we should’ve got him more involved in the game earlier in the game

because he is a difference kind of guy and he starts making things happen and everything starts

changing for us. I don’t think I got him involved in the game fast enough, early enough, and we need to

have him involved earlier in the game.”

On mistakes/differences from last week...

“I was much more aggressive last week in going for it on fourth down and every game is a little bit

different. You play it off different because the match‐ups are different. The situation’s different. I knew

going in to this game I wanted to play much more of a field position game than last week because just

the nature of the teams we’re playing. We handled the field position pretty well, we took care of the

football, which were two of the things. I don’t know what the time of possession came out to be, but I’m

assuming that we probably won that. That was something that we kind of went in wanting to do. I don’t

think we were obviously as good as what we need to be on third downs, and that’s something that

we’ve got to correct. Our tackling was really, really not very good, and some of that’s them. Don’t get

me wrong, they’ve got some outstanding players, they’re going to have a great season as they continue

to move forward and I know that, they know that. We need to tackle better. We didn’t tackle as well as

what we needed to and looking back I’m much more aggressive than what I showed today. It’s on me. At

the end of the game, I don’t take that field goal, so it’s on me. I go for it. It’s the way that I am. That’s on

me. It’s my fault.”

On deciding to go for a field goal in overtime after going for fourth down last week...

“Last week, obviously, we had the ball second. We already knew what the score was. They had already

kicked a field goal and while obviously we could still tie it with a field goal, sometimes it’s better to put

some points on the board and you put some pressure on the other team to try to make something

happen and obviously that didn’t work for us. Like I said, this one’s my fault. Error in judgment.

On poor tackling...

“I think you’ve certainly got to give Auburn players a lot of credit because I think obviously they are the

ones that are pulling out of the tackles and you can’t dismiss that and just say that it’s bad tackling.

Sometimes guys have good players, and they do. We didn’t wrap up near as well. We were kind of

throwing bodies around and sometimes you can get into some bad habits. We didn’t tackle a bunch in

practice this week because we were a little bit beat up and we wanted to kind of come in fresh.

Obviously we need to tackle some more this next week because this is still a young team. There’s just

not very many seniors in this group and we had a lot of freshmen out there for the first time today, and

it showed at times. Some of those guys we had to play a lot of people, it was certainly a little bit warmer

day. We played a significant number of people in this game. We’re about a year away from where we’d

like to be at a maturity standpoint, but they fight and we’ve got to tackle better.”

ULM Player Quotes

QB Kolton Browning

On today’s game…

"I felt like at times we moved the ball really well down the field. There were also some plays where we

felt like we could have scored some more points today than we did."

On what the key was to playing with Auburn and being successful offensively...

"I think it was an all‐around effort form everybody on the offensive side. The receivers were running

great routes and getting open. The offensive line did a great job protecting and seeing the blitz and

giving me time to get rid of the ball. The game slows down a lot once you've been in the system for

three years."

On if he felt like the team prepared well for Auburn...

"They did a lot of things that we expected them to do. They ran many of the same coverages we

practiced, but we were prepared well. Our coaches did a great job of preparing us for this week. I felt

like we executed our game plan just like we knew we could."

On if he felt hurried today...

"I had time, for the most part, but they have a really fast, really good defensive line along with the rest

of their defense. I did get hurried a few times, but nothing to panic about. I felt like I could still step in

there and make the throw or make a play."

On the defense trying to get after him…

"We definitely saw more stunts during the game than we thought, and they blitzed toward the end of

the game a lot. But still, they ran a lot of coverages that we knew they were going to."

On what it says about the team to have a good start to the season...

"We never look at the scoreboard and say 'It's over.' Our offense is explosive and very dynamic. We can

move the ball up and down the field really fast. Coach can put us in a two‐minute situation, and we can

take shots down the field, or we can take a slow drive inch by inch. If we can continue to execute on

offense the way we have the first two games, I think we'll be very successful and keep putting points on

the board."

LB Cameron Blakes

On problems with tackling…

“We just over‐pursued mainly. I put a lot of it on me, because most of the time I was the man on the line

of scrimmage. Those are normally the plays I usually make. I just had an out of body experience on some

of those plays which is unlike my character. For the most part I was pursuing really hard and running

behind their pads.”

On Auburn’s running game…

“We just got outplayed as far as the physicality. We showed spurts of it but we just weren’t consistent.

They gashed us for big ones and you just can’t have that.”

On Auburn’s trick play that resulted in a touchdown…

“It did catch us off‐guard. We prepared for the play they came out with. We just weren’t expecting them

to do a throwback. One of those plays you just have to chalk it up to the board.”

On Hail‐Mary pass at the end of the half...

“That was supposed to be an eliminated touchdown by me. I got in the backfield and beat the fullback,

but I just didn’t make the play. It’s something that I’m used to doing, and that my team is used to doing.

I just totally let them down on a lot of big plays and I take full credit for it.”

On the team’s mood…

“We just play ball. Everybody’s the same. Everybody puts on their pants the same way we put on our

pants. It’s just going out and executing, and seeing who plays better. They outplayed us for the most

part in this game, especially the running game.”

DE Joey Gautney

On Auburn’s yards after contact…

“I hate to say it, but we had some poor tackling this week. We couldn’t focus on locking up the core of

the defender. It’s an easy fix. It won’t happen again. It’s one of those things that if you don’t practice

during the week, then it is going to be hard to come out and play it.”

On difference in running game from Arkansas to Auburn…

“Their running back was a completely different running back then the one we went against last

weekend. I think he’s about a 170 and he’s quick. That has a lot to do with it, but in the end, if we are all

coming to the ball then we should be able to make the play when we hit the ball the first time. There’s

no excuse for a broken tackle.”

On defensive adjustments made at halftime…

“We went out there and we didn’t execute the defense as well we wanted to in the first half. In the

second half we came out and executed a little better. We held them to seven points in the second half.

We came out and executed in the second half. We executed the plays that were designed to stop them.”
