The Heinzelmannchen familyincludes Hans, his wife Carolla, their son Johann and daughterAngelika. These gnomes, alongwith Gertie the Goose and thethree Morel Mushrooms (Max,Moritz and Metta), have becomea featured attraction at New Ulmfestivals over the years. Be sureto be on the lookout for them, and have your camera handy!

“The Narren” (or “The Fools,” inGerman) characters have beenappearing at New Ulm and otherfestivals since 1989. With theirhand-carved wooden masks andcolorful costumes, they can befound mingling with the crowdor leading a snake dance. Eachone of the Narren has his or herown unique personality andstory and is often looked upon asthe relative everyone has, butnobody wants to claim! [email protected]

New Ulm was founded by two groups of German immigrants in 1854,both looking to create a “utopian German community on the Americanwilderness.” The community still holds on to its German heritage today!

Located downtown, the 45-foot-tall Glockenspiel’s bells can be heardchiming throughout the day and playing programmed pieces at noon, 3PM and 5 PM. The Glockenspiel houses 37 bells with a total weight ofmore than two tons. Twelve figurines depicting characters from thecity’s history rotate on a circulating stage during performances. FromThanksgiving to early January, the figurines of a three-piece polka bandthat stand directly below one of the clock faces are replaced with anativity scene. It is one of the few free-standing carillons of its size in theworld. Hours: Noon, 3 & 5 PM daily; plus 10:30 AM, 1 PM during festivals.

When German settlers founded New Ulm, they used a stately oak treethat still stands at 3rd South and German Streets as the reference pointfor the town plat. One hundred and fifty years later, the town’s residentscelebrated New Ulm’s anniversary with a different type of tree.Reminiscent of those that decorate German towns, the Heritage Treedepicts different stages of the town’s history, from a riverboat to the rail-road, the New Ulm Battery and a beer wagon. A plaque explains the sig-nificance of each item. 101 South Minnesota Street

This 102-foot monument towering over New Ulm depicts

Hermann the Cherusci, the ancient hero whose army lib-

erated Germany from Roman rule in 9 A.D. As German

immigrants came to the United States, the legend of

Hermann as the father of German independence and a

symbol of honor and pride came with them. In 1840, a

national “Order of the Sons of Hermann” was founded in

New York. In 1887, the Order commissioned a statue of

Hermann similar to the one in Germany - to be erected in

New Ulm. It took nearly a decade to complete the more

than 4,000-pound statue, designated by the U.S.

Congress in 2000 as a national symbol of German her-

itage.

Visitors may climb a staircase to the base of the statue for

a stunning, panoramic view of New Ulm and the

Minnesota River valley. The monument sits on the

grounds of Hermann Heights Park, which has playground

equipment and picnic facilities.

Page 11: new ulm battery

New Ulm was founded by two groups of German immigrants beginning in 1854, both looking to create a “utopi-an German community on the American wilderness.” Using the advice of a French fur trader, they sited their townon the natural terraces that occurred near the confluence of the Minnesota and Cottonwood Rivers in south-cen-tral Minnesota. It is named after Ulm, a city on the Danube River in south-central Germany, and home to the tallestchurch steeple in the world and the birthplace of Albert Einstein.

The biggest historical event in New Ulm’s historyhappened shortly after its founding with the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, when New Ulm was attackedtwice that August. Barely surviving the fighting by thedisgruntled and ill-treated Dakota Indians, the townwas nearly destroyed and was even briefly abandonedafter the attacks. Soon after the settlers returned andwent about their business of town-building, New Ulmsurvived locust infestations in the early 1870s and adamaging tornado in 1881. The pioneers endured diffi-cult times, indeed!

Brewing, grain milling, brick-making and cigar-mak-ing were initial businesses that thrived and with thearrival of the railroads in 1872, New Ulm was connectedto the rest of the country in an efficient and productivemanner. The arrival of many German-Bohemians in the1870s also contributed to civic and economic growth.

The erection of the Hermann Monument in 1897,honoring an ancient Germanic hero, boldly proclaimedNew Ulm’s strong German heritage - although thatwould come under attack twenty years later. The year1917 was a tough year on America and New Ulm, in par-ticular. The Turners, still a leading social force in NewUlm, led a rally protesting America’s involvement inWorld War I. Shortly afterward, the Governor removed

our Mayor, City Attorney and County Treasurer fromoffice for misconstrued “treasonous” speeches.Subduing the strong German culture in New Ulmbecame necessary for the next few years.

Leading New Ulm back to prominence was thenational popularity of old-time music that came fromNew Ulm artists such as, Whoopee John Wilfahrt, FezzFritsche and Harold Loeffelmacher. The rediscoveryand pride in New Ulm’s German heritage that camefrom this period led to a promotion of New Ulm as atourist attraction, evidenced most noticeably by PolkaDays that began in 1953, and carried on by successorfestivals Heritagefest and Bavarian Blast.

Today, New Ulm thrives in the Minnesota River val-ley with diverse businesses led by Kraft HeinzCompany, 3M, large trucking industries, A.M.P.I.’s but-ter and dairy output, along with the N.U. MedicalCenter and numerous machining businesses.

New Ulm’s setting in the valley contrasts with theotherwise flat prairie of the region. This beauty, com-bined with a diverse economic structure, and a strong“sense of place” and history, makes New Ulm a star inMinnesota’s list of “must see” places. We invite you tovisit us and discover why we are so widely acclaimed!

Following the U.S-Dakota War of 1862, the Minnesota Civilian Militia Act authorized the formation of an artillery unitby the city of New Ulm to protect against future Dakota attacks. In 1856 the first German-Bohemians arrived in New Ulm.Many of them settled near the riveralong the southern boundaries ofthe town, in an area that came tobe called “Goosetown” - for theirpractice of keeping flocks ofgeese. In 1984, an organizationdeveloped to study their ances-tors, with an effort to create amonument to honor those samepeople. The German-Bohemianimmigrant monument was erectedin 1991 to honor immigrants fromthe area known at the time asBohemia (now the western CzechRepublic). This 7 1/2 -foot-tallgranite monument features a stat-ue of a father, mother and child. On the back, the parents legs areraised to represent their love ofmusic and dancing, valued tradi-tions brought from “the old coun-try.” On stone pavers at the base ofthe monument are the names of350 German-Bohemian familieswho settled in New Ulm.Celebrating the 25th Anniversaryof the monument in May 2016!

New Ulm’s Way of the Cross was completed in 1904 and renovated in 2004. Its 14 sta-tions, with statues imported from Bavaria, provide a quiet, reflective walk up a gentleincline to a chapel dedicated to the Mother of Sorrows. Entrusted to the Diocese ofNew Ulm, the Way of the Cross is located on the 5th North hill, behind the New UlmMedical Center, and includes a nearby memorial to Father Alexander Berghold, aninstrumental priest in the 1800s who, along with Sister Flavia of the Poor Handmaidsof Jesus Christ, initiated the project.

Dedicated in April 2010, the Chapel of the Christ was built to commemorate the 150thanniversary of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Its soaring beams, fineartistry, and musical emphasis make it a wonderful addition to the college’s mission– preparing workers for carrying the gospel of Christ to the world. The 57 rank Schantzorgan is the perfect instrument for the chapel’s superior acoustics.

The present Cathedral is the third church on this location, with the other two lost tothe Dakota War in 1862 and a tornado in 1881. Begun in 1890 and not finished until1903, it is a fine example of German Baroque architecture. People of all faiths are wel-come to visit the glorious interior, originally created by local artists AlexanderSchwendinger, Christ Heller and Anton Gag. The scene in the church’s apse with Godthe Father presiding over Heaven and Earth is stunning, as is the intricate main altar.

and offering acres and acres of parks, New Ulm isthe perfect place to get outside and get busy!Soak up the sun along our trails, hit the links(disc, miniature or traditional), or drop a line inthe river. Just get out there! You’ll thank uscome bratwurst and sauerkraut time.

From New Ulm's earliest beginnings the com-munity has had a vested interest in park space. The original plat for the City included several keyparks that still exist. Today New Ulm is able toboast a total of 42 park units. Visit www.ci.new-ulm.mn.us to see a list of park facilities and theamenities available at each location. Park shel-ters can be reserved: 507-359-8344

Park & Recreation Director Tom Schmitz cred-its this rich system to the original founders say-ing, "[It's] the result of New Ulm's history ofrecreation and outdoor activities. This goes backto German Land Society and Turner ethic of'sound mind and sound body.' They saw thevalue of recreation, green spaces, and naturalresources."

Open to visitors, the city’s Recreation Center(122 S Garden St) has an indoor swimming poolwith slides, whirlpool and an aquatic climbingwall; a three-lane indoor track; indoor courts thatcan be used for tennis, basketball or volleyball;racquetball and walleyball courts; strength andcardio facilities and group fitness area andcycling classes. In line with New Ulm’s commitment toactive lifestyles, there is a 13-mile paved BikeLoop (see pages 30-31) around the city. Thisbike loop didn’t happen overnight! The pro-ject began with a paved recreational trailthat runs more than five miles along an oldrailroad bed, making it the perfect path foran easy family ride or run. The trail travelsfrom Broadway and 24th North St to Germanand 20th South St. Along the way, take inthe river, a few city parks and even somefarm land.
