“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.”“None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonder-ful.” – Mother TeresaThe Independence Day of India, holds tremen-dous ground in the list of national days, since it reminds every Indi-an about the dawn of a new beginning, the

India’s gaining of inde-pendence was a tryst with destiny, as the struggle for freedom was a long and tiresome one, witnessing the sacrifices of many freedom fighters, who laid down their lives on the line Independence Day is usually celebrated in our school with Zeal and ethos .Flag-hoisting cere-monies, patriotic speech-es, parades and cultural events extolling the theme ‘National Integration’ will be the part of every In-dependence day celebra-tion. With an intention to

celebrate Independence Day with due respect, a virtual platform was chosen. We planned to telecast the Indepen-dence Day programme in you tube. The guidance of our Correspondent Shri R. Rajavelu and the motivation of Principal Mrs. Jeeva Senthil helped us to gain momentum. Various competitions were planned and an-nounced for all the classes through WhatsApp from the first week of August. The indomitable spir-it of participation from

students catalysed the spirit of the celebration. Since we could not meet any one in person we expected the commu-nication lag and so we started planning well in advance. The stu-dent participants were selected and allotted with the responsibil-ities.But the celebra-tion proved that our thoughts have no limits. The Independence Day celebration proved that happiness is contagious than the corona virus.

Rani Velu Nachiyar was a queen of Sivaganga estate. She was the first Indian ruler to fight and triumph against the British. Popularly known as ‘veeramangai’ (brave woman).she was an only child. her parents thus raised her as they would have raised a male heir. She was trained in horse-riding, archery, and martial arts such as valari and silambam. She was also well-versed in sever-al languages. Velu Nachiyar bravely defeated the British in a brilliantly formulated coup. Her intelligence gathering agents found out where the British had stored their ammuni-tion.she also devised the first recorded suicide bombing in history, with her Dalit command-er-in-chief Kuyili. She did this in 1780, 77 years before the First War of Independence. The 66-year-old valiant queen passed away in 1796 in Sivagangai, her beloved kingdom.

Kumaran also known as Tirup-pur Kumaran was an Indian revolutionary who participated in the Indian indepen-dence movement. he was heavily involved in Gandhian policy, took part in the struggles declared by Gandhi for national liberation. He founded Desa Bandhu Youth Association and led protests against the British. This con-sisted of young people in and around Tamil Nadu, willing to fight for India’s freedom. They conducted various protest marches against the British all over Tamil Nadu. They inspired a lot of people, especially youth. On January 10, 1932, while participating in a pro-test against the British government, he was beaten by the British police. Even as he fell, he lay in his arms, holding up the Indian flag, then considered a symbol of independence. Thus he is known as Kodi Kaththa Kumaran

Begum Hazrat Mahal, also called as Begum of Awadh was the second wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. She rebelled against the British East India Company during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. After her husband had been exiled to Calcutta, she took charge of the affairs in the state of Awadh and seized control of Lucknow. She organised an army of women. She actively took part in the re-volt of 1857 against the Doctrine of Lapse under which Dalhousie wanted her to sur-render Lucknow. She gave a stiff resistance. But after the fall of Lucknow, she escaped to Kathmandu. She was a very brave woman and such bravery in a male-dominated soci-ety was unprecedented. She died in exile in 1879. She was buried in an unmarked grave close to the Jama Masjid in Kathmandu.

Lakshmi Sahgal was a revolution-ary of the Indian independence movement, an officer of the Indian National Army, a doc-tor, and the Minister of Women’s Affairs in the Azad Hind government. Her meeting of Subhas Chandra Bose changed her life from which she emerged with a mandate to set up a women’s regiment. Sahgal is commonly referred to in India as “Captain Lakshmi”, a reference to her rank when taken prison-er in Burma during the Second World War. Sahgal joined the communist party of In-dia and represented the party in the Rajya Sabha. She was one of the founding mem-bers of the All India Democratic Women”s Association and led many of its activities. She led a medical team to Bhopal after the gas tragedy in December 1984, worked to-wards restoring peace in Kanpur following the anti-Sikh riots of 1984. Sahgal suffered a cardiac arrest and died on 23 July 2012 at the age of 97. Her body was donated to a medical college for medical research.

Rabindranath Tagore was a Ben-gali poet, short-story writer, song compos-er, playwright, essayist, and painter. He was the first non-European to win the Noble Prize in Literature. Tagore’s poetic songs were viewed as spiritual and mercurial. He is sometimes referred to as “The Bard of Bengal”.His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India’s “Jana Gana Mana” and Bangladesh’s “Amar Shonar Bangla”. The Sri Lankan national anthem was inspired by his work. From time to time he participated in the Indian nation-alist movement, though in his own non-sen-timental and visionary way; and Gandhi, the political father of modern India, was his devoted friend. Tagore was awarded a Knighthood in 1915 but within a few years, he resigned the honor as a protest against the Amritsar (Jallianwalla Bagh) Massacre. He passed away on 7th August 1941 aged 80.

Tirot Sing, also known as U Tirot Sing Syiem born in the year 1802, was one of the chiefs of the Khasi people in the early 19th century. He was the chief of Nongkhlaw, part of the Khasi Hills. He was a constitution-al head sharing corporate authority with his Council, general representatives of the leading clans within his territory. Tirot Sing declared war and fought against the British for at-tempts to take over control of the Khasi Hills. In the Anglo-Khasi War, the Khasis lacked firearms and had only swords, shields, bows, and arrows. They were untrained in the Brit-ish type of weapons. Tirot Sing fought with native weapons such as a sword and shield. He was shot at by the British and had to hide in a cave. He was eventually captured by the British in January 1833 and deport-ed to Dhaka. He died on 17 July 1835.

Freedom and independence, two words that are similar yet entirely different from each other. Freedom is “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants”, while independence is defined as “free from outside control and not subject to another’s authority.” Both the words relate wonderfully to the concept of patriotism. Both ac-tions come with a side of responsibilities. Both the words have a strong impact on the assessment of a nation or of a person. When the topic of independence is taken, it is mostly viewed as a boon that is given or taken to help a person/state take complete control of themselves. Free-dom comes off as a more philosophical subject. Freedom is mainly liberating oneself from the shackles that bind them to certain activities that they do not wish to do. An empiricist would see freedom as the tool that would help reach a zen-like state of mind. Comparing freedom and in-dependence is a test of its own, as both determine the ability of a person to make choices that would define the abilities of an individual that would inevitably impact the nation and the world that they live in. As Brigham Young once said, “True independence and freedom can only exist

in doing what’s right”.

Peace and Security are the two absolute necessities when it comes to coexisting on this planet as humans. We come across many horrifying incidents everyday and hearing about each one creates more space for panic and terror among societies. The United Nations came into existence in 1945 as a result of the aftermath of WWII with the sole mission to maintain world peace and security. History stands as testimony to the fact that the United Nations has played a vital role in taking global security to greater heights and making the world a safer place than it previously was. Preventive diplomacy and mediation, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, some of the key resorts of the UN have been utterly instrumental in preventing various issues yet do not seem to make a satisfactory im-pact on the day-to-day lives of people residing in certain places where terrorism and fear runs rampant on the streets. As much as we can rely on external factors like the United Nations and the defence forces, true securi-ty is achieved only when humans start seeing each other with a touch of sensitivity and continue spreading the love needed to put our fellow humans out of harm’s way.
