haPPY FatheR’S DaY!My wife and I paid a visit last

month to my hometown of Cumberland, Maryland over Mother’s Day Weekend. We visited the gravesite of my parents during our stay.

Maynard Eugene Keyser, 1923 - 2009, still has two sisters living in what was once called “Fort Cumberland.” George Washington’s cabin still sits on the bank of the Potomac River looking towards

West Virginia. Aunt Betty and Aunt Doris are approaching 90. Their health is slipping just like the WW II veterans I saw at the Reagan International Airport on our departure from our Nation’s Capitol. They were in town by virtue of the wonderful charitable group “Honor Flight” to visit the WW II Memorial and other area landmarks. I shook hands with several of the surviving heros from America’s Greatest Generation. Most were in wheelchairs; only a few could still walk with some assistance. They were from the Greater Northwest area of Portland and Seattle. Arriving and departing passengers gave them a well-deserved standing ovation. Some had tears in their eyes as did most of the greeters, including me. There are not many of these unsung warriors left.

My father Eugene dropped out of High School to join the United States military during this time. After a short stint in the Coast Guard patrolling the Great Lakes, he found himself in the South Pacific around the Solomon Islands and Guadalcanal bringing Army and Marines to shore on a LST boat. He was wounded twice, received a Purple Heart, but never talked about his experiences. He could never accept my offer to take the family to Hawaii and visit Pearl Harbor. The cemetery there and the memories of war were too much to handle. We never kept guns in the house. I found out about some of these things when Mom showed

me his Honorable Discharge papers. My parents married in 1946. I came

along the next year. Eugene would go on to work for the B&O Railroad like his father and two brothers. He worked hard so my sister and I could have an opportunity for a good education. Dad’s former high school, Fort Hill, honored him before his passing with an honorary diploma. I honored him by placing an order for the half-dozen medals referenced on his discharge papers. It was the last gift he opened up during Christmas, 2008, the year before he died. His early cigarette habit and asbestos dust from the job eventually did him in on September 1, 2009.

Mom, the kids, my sister and family gathered on that Christmas morning to watch in amazement as Dad opened the last present under the tree. Everyone had tears in their eyes watching my father gaze at the memory of his service to our country.

If your Dad is still with you, let him know you love him this Father’s Day. I have discovered that being a Father is a special blessing. Happy Father’s Day to each of you who has worn that hat in some shape or form over the years.

Love, Tom

Written by Tina Torres:

When I first got licensed, a number of attorneys, including my boss (who hap-pened to be my Dad), steered me away from family law. Dad, in particular, told me not to do it because the cases were of-ten highly emotional and volatile. A few years into my practice, though, when a lady who had little money and a 16-year-old daughter suffering from leukemia called, I decided to jump into the family law arena. Not only was her ex-husband suing her for custody, he was behind in child support by $25,000.00. I have to admit, I took the case because I was emo-tionally driven. How could this person who owed so much in back child support do such a thing to this poor woman while she and her daughter were dealing with a life-threatening illness? In the end, we won, and a Judge awarded my client cus-tody of her child and all of her back child support and attorney’s fees. Today, her daughter is beautiful and healthy with a child of her own, the family no longer in the state of turmoil they were in when we first met.

Shortly thereafter, a young mother called for help. She spoke of horrible things about the child’s father and want-ed to terminate his rights. I can still re-member the intensity of the mother’s an-ger and her daily phone calls to my office. In the end, my client made her case when the father voluntarily relinquished his parental rights. Only a few months later, I received a phone call from the hysteri-cal and devasted mother. After stepping away for just a few seconds while her baby boy took a bath, the child drowned in a tragic accident. The story will forev-er stick with me, and I’ll never forget the beautiful blonde curly-haired boy with sky-blue eyes and an impish smile. I keep

in touch with the family and know they are still torn and trying to find solace after this dear child’s death.

In my 18 years of practice, I’ve seen families work together through such dev-astating and difficult times as divorce, but I’ve also seen families fall apart. I can say that in my own life, I experienced the fall-ing apart after my parents’ own divorce, but I also experienced the coming togeth-er as we healed. I’ve told many a client when they initially come see me in a state of disarray that, at some point, they will be fine. Often perplexed and in the midst of their pain, they’ll ask, “But how?” And, inevitably, I say, “forgiveness.”

It is without saying we all have to deal with forgiveness throughout our lives, and many of us may be struggling with it right now. If there’s anything I feel can help individuals through a divorce, a custody battle, or practically any area in our lives where we’ve been hurt, it’s for-giveness. And it’s love.

I’m sure anyone involved in family law matters will agree that people often promote divorce wars or custody battles because they are hurt and angry. When seeing my clients go through these tumul-tuous times of their lives, I’m reminded of Martin Luther King’s mantra, “Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it; hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.”

Really, it comes down to looking at ourselves and taking personal responsi-bility in any given situation. So, rather than perpetuating the “He did this, or she did that” mentality, push yourself and your clients to ask, “What positive ac-tion can I take in this situation?” Rather than sitting back while your client tells her child, “Your father doesn’t love you and is a worthless loser,” promote the understanding that both parents are part

of that child, and the ugly things Mom says about Dad are, in effect, ugly things she’s saying about her child. Rather than promote a family’s fighting, take an ac-tive role in finding some kind of common ground and work from there.

I find it hard to treat family law issues in the traditional adversarial method of practicing law because it’s when a family is torn apart that we should all work to-gether, including attorneys, to guide our clients and their families through crises. In this Springtime of reawakening and re-birth, perhaps a reminder of “holistic” or “peacelaw” principles is timely:

Promote peaceful advocacy and holistic legal principles; encourage compassion, reconciliation, forgiveness, and healing; advocate the need for a hu-mane legal process; contribute to peace building at all levels; enjoy the practice of law; listen intentionally and deeply in order to gain complete understanding; acknowledge the opportunity in con-flict; and wholly honor and respect the dignity and integrity of each individual human being.

After all, when we value one anoth-er, we are essentially valuing ourselves.

Tina Torres is a former County Court at Law Judge and currently practices family law with the law firm of Zinda & Davis, PLLC. Both former clients mentioned in this article gave express permission for the use of their stories in this writing.

Please welcome the newest of the San Antonio Bar Association and San Antonio Bar Foundation staff! Starting in May, Erin Boren and June Moynihan joined the hard-working SABA/SABF team.

erin BorenPublications Director

Erin Boren fell in love with San Antonio when she attended the Univer-sity of Texas at San Antonio, where she graduated cum laude with a degree in English, Professional Writing.

She was the founding editor of The Paisano Plus, a feature magazine for UTSA students, and aid to The Paisano newspaper staff. Her work at The Pai-sano, Texas’ only non-profit student-led newspaper, led her to pursue a career in publications and media.

She was a Southwest Airlines Customer Relations Representative responsible for customer comunication and, as a member of the Communica-tions Committee, she produced the department newsletter. Erin was also a part of the Editorial Team at Southwest Airlines, where she edited and wrote for

employee publications. Erin loves traveling and being

around the aviation industry, despite her fear of heights. She also enjoys spending time with her family in Hous-ton and spoiling her two cats.

June moynihanSan Antonio Bar Foundation Director

June Moynihan hails from the Bay area in Northern California and moved to San Antonio four years ago to be closer to family.

She graduated from the University of California-Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco and practiced for two years before returning to market-ing and designing corporate events. She was the Program Manager respon-sible for morale programs at Operation Homefront, a national $73 million non-profit that supports the families of active duty service members and wounded warriors.

June is married (to a UC-Hastings alum) and loves to talk about gardening, new restaurants and the nerdy things she learns from NPR and TedTalks.

Meet the new SABA Staff: Erin and June
