Through NIHONBASHI 400 years MAP project, I conformed a Japanese traditional culture with japanese proud at the same time, I start to think that connection of cultural activity and urban planning create a historical identity in the modern city.

In generally doing architectural and urban design, the architecture can match,If we can think not only the given condition like a architectural law and ground condition but also the context between site and history,we can design the architecture can match other cities view. Through the project, I learned that architectural position and roll in the urban city to capture the feature of urban city with the macro view.

Through My Diploma project, I completely think about the existence of urban space and private space. This project is that I realize that essence done landscape, buildingscape and windowscape are the human activity in Tokyo's residence that we can't feel historical context effective design.

I answered architectural way thinking about energy producing for the future to research about environmental and urban problems of modern city.Through this project, I feel that it is needed for the city that sustainable and self-sufficient architecture is demand for future scene.

Nihonbashi400yearsmap

Since the WW2, the traditional cultures and buildings have covered with the modern movement and infrastructure on this site.Actually, this area has been scattered var ious kinds of outstanding things. Taken the peculiar scenes are introduced on this map, Some of us can re-consider that Nihonbashi is outstanding place in Tokyo which have various kind of funny visual.

In the present being limit of enduring the modern architectures and buildings, renovated old dwellings are focused by some designer and artist as a workplace and housing, and this area inform the good place for designers to show their masterpieces.

The long established shops that keep on managing from Edo-period are leaving on the Nihonbashi area. These shop’s products are produced unchanged feature with influenced by the modernism and industrialism by professional craftmans. This fact must be stimulation for buyer’s greed to buy good things when they researched this visualized traditional site and information.

In the past, this area was called "EDO's Kitchen". The shrine where the place god was given in watched and saw the people who live in Nihonbashi area have been left in here yet. The Nihonbashi area, to preserve memorable place and to improve economy, is the most complex city in Tokyo.

The thought to "the thing which is not visible" which came out into main Mr. 14 generation of Ibasen this Yoshida's talk. It supports by raising a town with the earthquake disaster which cooperates in a local festival. Just relation with such a person is worthy and important. It is said that the way of life of the human being instead of family precepts has been valued from generation to generation. This will be understanding, if it looks back upon the history of Ibasen. It suffered no less than about ten times of disasters, such as a conflagration of Meireki, a big earthquake of Ansei, and the Great Kanto Earthquake, and "what visible" has disappeared. However, probably, the essence of Ibasen which still continues from the Edo period or before is choked up into the "thing which is not visible."

The thought to "the thing which is not visible" succeeded from generation to generation

Ibasen is started by the merchant of Hamamatsu gone up to Edo with Ieyasu Tokugawa. since the first hometown of the shop name Italian theater of those days was Enshu Iba-mura (present Hamamatsu Iba-cho). foundation that time -- an Edo Nihonbashi Horie town (present Nihombashi Kofuna-cho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo) -- business was heard and Japanese paper, bamboo goods, etc. were mainly treated [ of the Edo Shogunate ]. From the second half of Edo, it was begun to treat fan ukiyoe and the name of the "Italian theater" was spread to an Edo in the city as publishers. The domestic art museum can see the picture of the "Ibasen-ban" of those days from the first also in overseas prominent art museums, such as the British Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Van Gogh Museum, now.

Goods先の見えない こんな時代は れんこんを覗いて先を見通そう

This time when the point is not visible will look into a lotus root, and will foresee the point.

The design of Edo has the effective joke. A lotus root, and a dragonfly, a gourd. Although no meaning can be felt apparently, in fact, it has the hidden meaning there. When you notice it, you will laugh it as "hee-hee" in spite of yourself. Even if present-day we look at an Edoite's fashion, it is fresh and smart.

This proposal, based on the findings of science and technology of the 21st century, is a plan to install “natural” urban environment into “Tokyo 2050” , for reviewing and evaluating “nature” of Tokyo as it has, and for visualizing her original form and nature.Contemporary Tokyo is the mega-city where overwhelmingly dominant are artifacts such as roads, railways, buildings, and condominiums. The land of Tokyo has been covered with modern architecture and modern city planning, to be invisible its substance that natural things generally have, “form of madara (fluctuation) “. Natural things mentioned here are: 1) natural topography, geology, and soil 2) a variety of ecological systems, and 3) human beings, animals and plants."madara Tokyo" means "fractal city Tokyo" that is the concept of our project for the treatments to unnatural parts of over-artificial Tokyo, and that is an architectonic proposal for the "natural" urban environment to be updated. It is a vision of Tokyo, with nature, of nature, for nature, and it will for people to live in “natural” urban environment. And Tokyo will gradually turned to be "natural city” .

Target is the area from Hongo plateau, via Ueno hill, to Asakusa area. Hongo, Ueno, Asakusa, inherently, are the places where nature is dominant, that is, it is the heterogeneous area or the land with " uneven form and nature". It is a mixed site of lowland and terrace, located on the periphery of early Tokyo central district. Tokyo has been grown up, changed, and developed as a result of mediation of urban lifestyle, which was born in the modernity. This area is now a little bit old Tokyo with calm atmosphere of Showa-era, and then, it has a capacity and possibility of big transformation in the future. Shinobazu-no-ike is a large pond in the lowlands between Hongo plateau and Ueno hill. 150 years ago, the Meiji government of Japan here held a major international exposition to show the western civilization to Japanese people. People were strongly interested in the newest products and events of the western countries.Western style of schools, school of medicine and school of physics, are established at the site of former Kaga-han residences on Hongo Plateau, and School of fine arts and museum of arts were established at the of former Kaneiji-temple on Ueno hill. Western modernization of Japan began at the place of Ueno, introducing western science and arts.

There is Senso-ji Temple near Sumida River in Asakusa area, Higashi- Honganji Temple and large and small temples are there surround. A lot of town people, merchants and craftsmen, have been lived in that area. This region is the uptown and downtown of the first generation in modern Tokyo, and mixture of natural objects and artifacts will be there, and "natural buildings" will also be there fitting to the land they stand. It is the schne of "Tokyo 2050". It is the new city to live together with diverse of people and living things. "madara Tokyo" will be a model of 21C city for people to live in together with nature, where people of varieties of nationality will visit, live, and stay for short-term, medium-term and long-term stay or settlement,

Notation of human activity

In 2050, the life style will be ''medievalized'' in sense. People will move more during their life, and the networks among cities will be enhanced and globalized.Meanwhile, their daily movement will be more diverse, which results that suburb-to-CBD commuting will not be essential.''Place" appears to be superposition of movings of "people."

We consider Tokyo 2050 from the viewpoint of the relationships between place and the activities of people who stay or pass through there.

We researched about various kinds of activity that people response the real condition around the traditional and cultural place. Peoples show individual behaviors respectively, furthermore, there are trend around peculiar things and places.

I note these typical behavior and proper for the future urban design. Just they react against encountered things and event. This notation shows each typical behavior at the peculiar place. Compiling these notation is used analyze human activity and design new urban design.

A Map of THE LIQUEFACTION

The mottle places are especiallyhard and not to being liable to get liquefaction.

We experienced the terrible earthquake last 11 March , after that association of urban design and association of architecture and the other many researching institutions are reconfirming various kinds of data composing urban structure to judge the risk and conditions. To know the present condition of strata and ground is one of the important thing. After that, this information should be reflected to critical design by all designers.

The areas "Hongo, Ueno and Asakusa" complexed by lowland and terrace were genuinely well natured sites that had heterogeneous form and spotted character. However, nowadays, the land is covered by homogeneous and modern feature of urban planning and architecture, the form of madara(changeable condition) which the nature thing has universally is hard to discover. Therefore, we focus on under the ground covered by infrastructures, define and analyze the site again.

In Tokyo, almost all people choose the train to move. So,the stations that are used by people show the realm sharing the user. This map shows the realm using by Voronoi diagram. we can design effective layout planning with this realm and the other maps.

The Map of the official land price is changed by the current of load, railway, and various kinds of factors, but the cultural heritage and the place of overpopulated area are rocketing. To guess and analyze the information and fluctuation, I realized that it is possible to be able to design new feature and landmark to the future plan.

A loamy layer of Kanto spread to the part of table-lands mainly. At lowlands, the distribution of sand, cray, silt, and a conglomerate are mixed. In former days, Tokyo lowlands were under the sea. Therefore the condition of around the Sumidagawa river’ s strata has heavily conglimerate with going toword closer to tablelands,we could understand the conditions are changing light sand and clay.

Falling leaves and living things make up nutrious leaf mold for long years. The distribution ofdepth and width are diverse. Therefore the soil can decide precious resorces.

The surface soil are distributed whole place, especially there are rich soil in 0 – 3 meter of depth under the ground. The surface soil is brought from another place by people, therefore the location of high frequency which suppose the risk of liquefaction shows the tendency that being gathered much surface-soil.

A DISTRIBUTION MAP of SURFACE-SOIL The ground-water level is shallow at low land, on the other hand plateau shows deep depth.

At Sumidagawa river, The place divided to the area of Skytree and Senso-ji temple is always crowded and make a stream by lots of people coming from all over the world who want to eat various kinds of vegetables and cooking, The market managed by diverse visitors will have kept to be sparkling all day.

The crowd coming from the foreign countries, who tours the new broaden cycling-road started from the back side of Senso-ji temple to giving rise to the vigor areas.

The metropolitan highway and curtain of greener, inorganic matter and organic matter, the warm atmosphere is created by various kinds of vegetables which make human prosperity under the poor lighted metropolitan highway. When everyone start to walk forward to plats or river with brilliant scenes, all one surely meet new green landscape of industry and tradition.

If you focus on your senses, you can still smell the fragrance of flowers and find traces of a tasteful view in Kikusaka area. However, it is difficult to mix the complex man-made objects that these things are difficult to notice to people. In many cases the original floral scenes are only preserved in the form of a flower pot. The tracks of the changing scene will be formed eventually a loop and lead to the next greener.

LANDSCAPE DIAGRAM PLANNING DIAGRAM

I design small landmarks softly between forgotten Shinobazuike pond and traditional architecture. Connecting to Shinobazuike pond and the landmark of architecture around the pond slightly, Hongo and Ueno area turn back to vigorous unite. Once upon a time, at the time of the sound of the bell in Sensoji temple had been heard from everywhere, so we hope to extent and expand space of recognizing from here to all places with designing small devises.

02 : UENO PROJECT

Kappabashi possess strong and weak ground at the same time and make ‘Madara condition’ . These conditions have a possibility of dramatical change in the future. As students from all over the world, researchers of urban agriculture and foreigners stay on here for middle term or short term, urban structure is going to be designed and constructed circulative system. Agriculture of urban style will spread mainly to Kappabashi. Kappabashi has equipped the system of products will be gradually charming city with Asakusa, Skytree and Ueno.

05 & 06 : KAPPABASHI PROJECT

In each floor, I decide the theme and vista. So the floor layout is concluded automatically and the each roles are allocated.

This design consists of only windows of this industrialized standard of Japan. A design starts from the form of this window and all the space is constituted.

The new building seen from Sumidagawa river gives new order to a town, and makes a new tale to historical city of Nihonbashi. A place is the Nihonbashinakasu. This ground is a delta from the first. It develops from the Edo period and is a town which is reclaimed, serves as a residential section and consists of three major infrastructures of a skyscraper, metropolitan quantity, and an artificial river now. A building group raises each breath by composition of a window, it responds to it, and people gather. It is the same that people gather, even if time passes.

The facade of night exists in the night or daytime in the daytime, and it is charmed by the facade, and people stray, while not knowing. The functions which I designed on this ground are SOHO, a vacant lot, and galley. I think that it is the state of future Tokyo that fixed not a place but space deal with people. The grace of the new scenery of this ground is located on this place, and can be tasted. These space is made from the facade of the composed window. A main window certainly exists in every room.

Interior space and exterior space are connected by the main window, and induce people's new harmony. A window is emphasized and the facade which they are not usually conscious of also serves, as a focus which turns consciousness to the present space only by being connectable with an inside. This design will become indispensable to the building-scape of Japan which are rationalized and had been closed in the internal section.

People walk looking at a self-awareness of the issues and the fading scene, when you walk along a town.If a focus is hit to a window, a lot of beautiful rows of houses exist in the world. Each is respectively orderly and it is beautiful. But, Japan is different. As for a piece, beauty and a feeling of a life are not felt.To the window of the causing which is not beautiful, I doubted and started the design this time. The design of the composition of a window. The route which walks along a town exists without limit. The composition method of a window also exists infinite. Those who one tale exists at a time in how to walk, and walk along a town feel about the same order as a window-scape.The window-scape Is accumulated, becomes disorderly and is made open in front of people. Space follows the windows. The composition of a window, and the outline of the construction which acted in union, The two fusion serves as an antithesis to the rationalized present condition.

Extracting the characteristics of both citys facade through site investigation and research of literature.Grouping the extracted facade designs based on form, opening ratio, decorative element and color composition.Analyzing the patterns in terms of continuity and verifying the sequence of both citys streets.

Morphological analysis of the continuity of building facades along the canal - Compare to Amsterdam and Nihonbashi -

Morphology

Amsterdam and Nihonbashi are famous for the aquapolis. Nowadays, Amsterdam's beautiful canalscape have been preserved by people, on the other hand, in japan, the beautiful scene was changed by various kind of reasons. In this theses, I did a design analysis of the current waterfront architecture in both cities. It is my purpose to survey, contrast and find out the morphological difference between both city with focusing both city's condition of preservation about architectural form and surface of identity.

Conclution1 : Both cities have high percentage of opening ratio as an architecture grope standing along the canal.2 : There are peculiar type of form, window and entrance each cities, furthermore these factors are designing identical cityscape.3 : By comparison, if there is continuity of window sequence, identified cityscape is created by the harmony. To sum up, superiority or inferiority exist in what produces a feeling of unification of façade.

CONCEPTActually town-scape and inner space should be connected by design. We can not find this connection in Tokyo that we are able to live effectively and confortablely. In the urban city ,to design the colorful sighit of cityscape, the connection between Architecture and urbanism are encoureged.

At the night time, plenty of light from disordered window create fancy atmosphere around streets. These rhymes are matching each streets. The people who live in this residence go back home with attracted and excited in beautiful window-scape.

DAY TIME PERSPECTIVE

On lunch time, order and disordered windows show various kinds of human activity from inner space. Some of foreigner and tripper from local japan come to feel this new atmosphere of Tokyo’ s building and communicate with habitats. This way will be new communication way in Tkyo.

Shifting from Energy Consumer to SupplierOn the day of 3.11 the Great Earth Quake and Tsunami, nuclear power plants in Fukushima, Japan are seriously damaged. The damaged plants not only stopped generating electricity, instead, it start releasing radioactive materials and emitting radiation through out the whole wide vicinity, forcing people to evacuate. People of Fukushima pays tremendous sacrifices for having nuclear power plants in their back yard putting their life at risk of radiation in case of an accident. We now have to think what city can do to help and support them in the long term period and beyond. So all those electricity generated from the nuclear power plants were used by people of the city. The most important thing is that people of the city must start generating their own safe and clean recyclable energy in their own back yard. Not only for their own but supply the surplus energy to the surrounding district. But there is a problem. Where can we build such a big electric power plant to supply all the energy consumed in the city in itself? Vacancy in Skyscrapers by Population ShrinkageThe population in most of developed countries start to decrease in recent years and it is accelerating its speed. Of course, Tokyo is not an exception. When total population decreases, many vacant tenants or residences will be spread though out the city. Because population is shrinking year by year, these vacant spaces will tends to increase and be vacant for very long time with no particular usage.

Wind-Generated Power Plants using Winds Blowing Through SkyscrapersIn between skyscrapers, there are strong winds blowing through the tall building. These winds are pretty consistent throughout the years. In this proposal, we propose Skyscraper Wind-generated Power Plants by taking off the curtain walls of the vacant floor of the skyscraper for the wind to go though, setup micro-windmills on that floor to generate electric power. As population decreases and more vacant floor appers, more windmills can be set-up to generate electricity, and eventually whole skyscraper district becomes wind-generated power plants for manage its own energy as well as the surrounding city.

POPULATION TRANSITION ENERGY SUPPLY AND DEMAND

In Shinjuku, there are 25 buildings over 20 stories high, built densely in small area. It is one of the biggest business districts with gross floor area of over 3 million square meters and over 210,000 people works there. On the other hand, there are 250,000 square meters of vacant tenants and it covers 12% of the total gross floor area of the district. It is hardly likely that vacant tenants will be filled again and a l ternat ive usage is highly questioned.

In this proposal, wind-generated power plants starts from 2011. As population shrinks energy consumption also shrinks, but production of electricity increases. In 2050, the production of electricity overwhelms the consumption of it, creating energy sustainable city.

Population of Japan decreases hereafter. Sooner, the needs of tenants of Shinjuku Skyscraper also decreases and hollowing of the city shows up.

Tokyo 2100. As vacancy of the tenants increases, all the sky scraper district like Shinjuku, changes its mode to Wind-Generated Power Plants. Skyscraper district, where energy production exceed the consumption, will start supplying electricity to the surrounding areas.

Skyscraper districts will change its role from tertiary industry to energy producing secondary industry, evolving to new urban space.

As we compare with cities around the world, Tokyo is the city where population difference of daytime and night-time is significantly big. Especially, core center of Tokyo, population concentrates during the daytime up to 5 times the population of the night-time.This concentration of the population is made possible by the skyscrapers. In Tokyo, there are several skyscraper districts. The most famous one is Shinjuku Skyscraper District.

Electric Power Japan is Mostly Consumed in Tokyo. Even though Shinjyuku area only has an area of 18 square-kilometer, they consume 1% of the total energy consumption in Japan. It is in fact 200 times the value in area ratio. However, even though Tokyo is the biggest energy consumption area, there are no production of it in central Tokyo. In a time of disaster, Tokyo is vulnerable when power grid fails, it loses all modes of urban activity.

Phase 1 : WGPP starts to be self-sustaining

Second phase, the population gradually decreases. Aspopulation decreases, more vacant floor appears. Take off the curtain wall, set up more windmills. Eventuallythis process keeps going until the power consumed in the skyscraper equals the power generated by windmills on the vacant floor!!

Phase 0 : power supplied from outside

At the first phase, we will set up windmills on existing vacant floor of the skyscraper. We generate power by the wind generator but not enough to manage the whole building at this time. So we buy electricity from outside as ordinary.

Phase 2+3 : WGPP start supplying power tothe surroundings and outside

Third phase. The population still gradually shrinks. The power generated by the windmills on the skyscraper overwhelms consumption of it, being able to supply electricity to the surrounding city.

Process of skyscraper becoming Wind-Generated Power Plants

This is a proposal of building windmills in Shinjuku skyscraper district. These windmills are installed in vacant tenants and as these become vacant, windmills are filled in one after another. These windmills can capture enough wind from strong wind blowing though tall building.

In-between the skyscraper, there are very strong wind blowing though tall buildings Incase of Shinjuku, this strong wind blows from north to south or vice versa. The layouts of the buildings forces wind direction to change intricately, showing strong wind in some parts. This wind blows not only on the ground level but, it appears as strong wind at several meters height.

POWER PLANT WIND

As population shrinks, tenants will become vacant. The curtain wall of the vacant tenant floor will be opened along the wind going though the skyscrapers. Setup the windmill and power is generated in Shinjuku.

By flow of the wind weave though the skyscraper, the wind gets stronger, generating power continuously.
