The popular press is very keen to report on high profile divorce cases. You know the ones, Russian oligarch’s wife obtains settlement of £2 million a year for the rest of her life…and she’s only 28!Back in the real world, where the vast ma-jority of divorcing couples live, what is the reality?Some of the issues that a judge would take into account are:The welfare of children. This must be consid-ered first.The financial needs, obligations and responsi-bilities of the parties.The income, earning capacity, property and other financial resources which each party has and the potential to increase income.The Law Commission has suggested that the law should be changed to be more specific, that there should be a set formula. However, I would disagree. As a divorce solicitor who has been practising for 23 years I have used the same law all of that time. When everything else is constantly changing this piece of law has kept up with society because it is flexible.No two cases are the same and no two clients are the same. Consider the following:Sandra and Tony are divorcing as are Rachel and Andy. In each case the parties are all 52 years of age and both couples have been mar-ried for 15 years. They each have two children aged 12 and 16, and each couple has a home worth £200,000 with no mortgage. In each case one partner earns £30,000 and the other £40,000. So a simple formula would calculate the same settlement for each couple.However, what if Sandra had arthritis that was going to force her to stop working in three

year’s time? What if one of the children had a long term disability which meant that they would never be able to live independently? Do all four adults work in the public or pri-vate sector? Are they on final salary pension schemes? Are any of them in the police force or armed services as they should be able to retire earlier on a full pension. The situations are not the same. As an experienced family lawyer I would pick out the strongest features of a client’s case and advance them. Using the legal criteria listed above, how do you think you would advance your own case?Often the higher earner will give the lower earner a greater share of the equity in their home. In return they will not then have to pay any maintenance. The lower earner must have enough money to be able to maintain the house for this to work.If one party seeks maintenance then it must be for reasonable needs. As you can imagine, a North East judge had very little sympathy for the lady who chose not to work, had no children at home and stated that she needed £300.00 per month to buy underwear! The Husband worked offshore in some appalling conditions seven days per week. The judge ordered short term reduced maintenance to give the lady time to find a job, and presum-ably enough time to sell her vast collection of underwear!

The Church of St John the Evangelist (just by the Tesco/Shopping Centre roundabout, with easy parking) welcomeseveryone to its services, held each Sunday at 10.00 (the main service) & 6.30. St John's is a Local Ecumenical Partnership of the Anglican, Baptist, Methodist and United Reformed Churches, and this is reflected in the variety of its worship. A creche is available at all morning services, & Junior Church (for 3/4-11) & Genesis (for 11+) are held during the service every week, except when the worship is planned for everyone together (called Broadband). Junior Church groups are graded according to age, with friendly leaders and plenty of enjoyable activities. Genesis, in addition to Sundays, have a programme of events and activities throughout the year (bike-rides, sleepovers, etc.).Once per month, on the second Sunday, the evening service is called Fusion - a fast-moving service with lively music. Walking with the Radio Ramblers

age, there are several freshwater springs often stained orange from iron nodules in the underly-ing rock . There are also many wild plants which flourish on the wet soil.After having our lunch stop and (remembering to keep our appetites for our fish and chips later), we continued through a gap in the dunes turning right past a life bouy with a good view of Iron Scars and down to the bridge ever Howick Burn. After crossing the bridge we had a choice of routes, and because the coastal path has been badly eroded by the weather we took the shore-line route which we walked along to Craster to meet up with our friends at the Cottage Inn.After arriving at the Cottage we enjoyed a well earned drink before being led into the Hotspur dinning room where had our meal followed by the raffle, we then departed for home about 6oclock after enjoying another great day out

Our walk today was the last one on our sum-mer walks programme and was led by our walks booking secretary Pam, around the Craster area, as it was the last Summer walk we decided to make it a bit different by doing a shorter walk than we normally do and finish the day off by having a fish and chip meal at the Cottage Inn at Dunstan Steads which is about a mile up the road from Craster harbour, we are also going to the cottage on the 9th of December for our annual Christmas dinner.

There were 37 on the bus some of who we had not seen for a while, and it was great to see them again, the temptation of the of the fish and chip meal was to strong for them to resist.About half of our group decided that they were happy to spend a couple of hours in Alnwick instead of doing the walk as the weather forecast was predicting rain showers . After dropping off the walkers at Longhough-ton the bus continued with the non walkers to Alnwick they would join us at the Cottage Inn at 3oclock for our meal.

THE WALK.After going through a gate at Longhoughton we took the track away from the coastline and took the track with a wall on our left and continued on through a wicket gate and over the foot-bridge and stile to the left on the other side,we followed the track North -West leading to the car park above Howdiemont Sands with the road leading to Longhoughton away to the left, from the car park we then took a path down to the beautiful beach at Howdiemont Sands, for most of the year the only inhabitants of the beach are birds and animals.

After walking North around the headland we went through an area of sandstone and boulders to an area known as Sugar Sand, the cliffs aremade of boulder clay dumped during the ice
