Newbiggin Walk In winter, when the daylight hours are at their shortest, you may want to take advantage of a fine winter’s day but be reluctant to ven-ture too far in case the weather deteriorates and there is not a cafe or watering hole in sight where you can warm yourself up with a bowl of soup or coffee and cake. In Newbiggin by the Sea , there are two trails around the village which can easily be combined into one walk, the History Trail and the Arts Trail. Some time ago, myself and a group of friends met at Church Point to investigate this fascinating area with its strange mix of buildings and its history (before coal mining it was a holiday destination and a major port for the shipping of grain and for fishing). Our first port of call was St Bartholomew’ s Church to look at the East stained glass window by Stanley Murray Scott. After looking round the Church (which at the time was being decorated for a festival) we walked to the Cresswell Arms to look at the painting of Church point (by Arthur Young) which is painted on the chimney breast of the bar. Crossing the road, passing Coble Cottage we walked along to Vernon Place where the Mini Couple by Sean Henry is displayed in the garden. The Mini Couple is a miniature version of The Couple (locally named as Ebb and Flo) which stands in the bay and was the first offshore sculpture in the UK and is one of the focal points of Newbiggin’s revival as a visitor destination. Con-tinuing to The Plaza we admired the artwork at the Coble Inn and the paintings on the wall of the Sailing Club which was originally The Mechanic’s Institute built in 1891 and provided reading, smoking and billiard rooms for working class men in the town. We then continued our walk up Front Street and stopped in The Memorial Gardens. Here there are sandstone carved boulder sculptures by Graeme Mitcheson (who is originally from Newbiggin). At this point you can walk up towards Woodhorn Church along Central Parkway where there are more sculptures to admire but we chose to continue along Gibson Street with its many attractive houses and then into Windsor Terrace before passing a row of terraced houses leadint to the allotments and the path to Spital Point. We found ourselves in a children’s play area where we stopped for a break (we had a couple of young children with us) before heading up the hill where we were met with a fantastic view of the sweep of the bay and walked along the Promenade back into the village. There are many large proper-ties on the front which were homes and summer houses for rich Tyneside business people as in the 1930’s, Newbiggin was a popular destination for visitors. Continuing along the Promenade we came to the Lifeboat Station which was established after a tragedy in March 1851 when 10 young fishermen lost their lives in a storm at sea. Our walk ended at the Newbiggin Maritime Museum which opened in July 2011. If you wish to learn more about the maritime heritage of the area (and the story of the lifeboat which had to be dragged through snow to the other side of The Point in February 1940 so it could be launched to go to the aid of The Eminent) this is the place to go. It also has a cafe with views over the bay and is a great place to end the walk, though there are other places in the village where you can sit down and warm yourself up after an encounter with the bracing North Sea winds. . Further information about the walks can be obtained from organiser Vanessa Burgess on 07860 504763 [email protected]. Further information about the remainder of the programme for Mor-peth Footpaths Society can be obtained by calling Secretary Sarah Howells on 01670 513757.

PLAYTIME PLUS (St Aidan’s Church, Stobhill)Playtime Plus meets during school term times and is a group for the under 5s and their carers. Meetings start at 9.30 am and children enjoy a variety of activities. We begin with informal play in the children’s area at the back of the church where we also offer refreshments to the children and adults. After that we move to the front of the church, nearer the altar. The children are encouraged to sit on the carpet and take part in a very informal act of worship. This involves listening to a short story which is delivered using a variety of visual aids, depending on the theme, and is usually interactive due to the age of the children; then song time when one or two songs may be chosen by myself in connection with our theme but the children are also welcome to choose any particular song they wish (nursery rhymes etc.) that are familiar to them. We end the worship time with a short, sung prayer. We conclude with a simple craft which is also linked to our story and helps to reinforce the message it contains. We are a very informal group, with a mixture of people who come to Church and others who don’t and anyone interested in finding out more can contact Lesley, who runs the group, or just come along and give us a try. Everyone will be made very welcome. For more information contact the Parish Office. Tel 01670 503 326.
