RUISHTON VILLAGE HALL NEWSLETTER MAY 2019

Ruishton Book Club Ruishton Book Club 'The Wardrobe Mistress' by Patrick McGrath took us to the bleak and icy winter of post-war London where the theatre world was entwined with resurgent blackshirt activities. A good atmosphere was established but confused plotting and unsympathetic characters led to a rather unsatisfactory conclusion. More enlightening was the group's discussion on the practicalities of utilising the village's defibrilator, should it be needed. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 8th May at 1030 discussing RD Blackmore's classic 'Lorna Doone'. For more information phone Peter 443160.

In Stitches @ St George's will meet this month on Friday May 10th from 10 – 12am in the Ruishton Church Meeting Room. Anyone who enjoys knitting or crotchet will be very welcome. Muriel 443019

RUISHTON AND THORNFALCON PARISH COUNCIL

RUISHTON AND THORNFALCON PARISH COUNCIL SOMERSET WEST AND TAUNTON COUNCIL The new Somerset West and Taunton came into being on Monday 1st April. This new council combines Taunton Deane Borough Council and West Somerset Council. The new website is www.somersetwestandtaunton.gov.uk LOCAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS Ruishton and Thornfalcon Parish is divided into two Wards; Ruishton Ward and Thornfalcon Ward. There are ten seats for Ruishton Ward but only eight candidates (who are now duly elected) came forward so the Council can go ahead and co-opt two more councillors after 7th May. Thornfalcon has two seats and unfortunately there were no candidates for this Ward. As there were no can-didates, the procedure is different where ten or more electors will have the opportunity to write to Somerset West and Taunton Council calling for an election. Only after this procedure and no election is called, the Council can proceed to fill the vacancies by co-option. VACANCIES ON THE COUNCIL Doug Lowe, our present Chairman, and a Councillor for many years is retiring from the Council. Also retiring is George Anderdon who has been a Councillor over 40 years (probably nearer 50 years) and Ray Hancock who has been a Councillor for many years. They will all be greatly missed. The Council has four vacancies, two of which the Council can co-opt at the Annual Parish Council Meeting on 15th May for the Ruishton Ward. Are you interested in becoming a Councillor? As a councillor, you would attend meetings and generally keep up to date with things or you could be more active and take on a responsibility in an area that interests you. It is not daunting and there is plenty of literature you can read and there will be training. Any person interest-ed in becoming a Parish Councillor should contact the Heather Bryant by phone 01460 234770 or e-mail [email protected] for more information. ANNUAL PARISH ASSEMBLY The Annual Parish Assembly was held on 8TH April at in the Village Hall attended by 8 parishioners. The meeting heard a report from the Chairman on the year’s activities which has been very busy as always. There were other reports from the Village Hall, County Councillor, Neighbourhood Plan and Footpaths. MEMORIAL GARDEN The Council is aware that the Memorial stone has been knocked over. This has been reported to the Police who have this in hand. The Council are taking steps to correct the stone to its right position. The Council will also tidy up the Memorial Garden. At this present time, it will be either done by ourselves with volunteers or by the Probation Service. M5 JUNCTION 25 IMPROVEMENT SCHEME Around 250 people took the opportunity to attend two drop-in events held at Ruishton Village Hall during March. Staff from Alun Griffiths (Principal Contractors) and Somerset County Council were on hand to an-swer questions. The most frequently questions asked can be viewed at www.travelsomerset.co.uk/J25 The M5 J25improvement scheme is expected to take two years to complete. So far, the main activities have been site clearance work, with around 200 established trees removed from site and replanted at the West Monkton Country Park. Ecologists have been overseeing this work. Alun Griffiths will be liaising with partners to ensure other work will be co-ordinated to take place before the major construction programme begins. These include Highway England works on the motorway slip roads and a major Somerset County Council Scheme to resurface the nearby Hankridge roundabout. Alun Griffiths will also be establishing a weekly Public Information Centre where people can drop-in and dis-cuss the scheme. D COUNCIL 2019 15.5.19 5.6.19 3.7.19 7.8.19 4.9.19 2.10.19 6.11.19 4.12.19 The May meeting is the first meeting of the next four-year term for Parish Councillors. Council Meetings commence at 7.30pm (unless otherwise stated) and are held in Ruishton Village Hall. There is an opportunity at 7.30pm for the public to make comments or ask questions. A full set of minutes can be seen our website at www.ruishton.org.uk Parish Clerk: Mrs Heather Bryant, Northay House, Northay, Chard. TA20 3DN. Tel: 01460 234770. News from your Village Agent This month sees a focus on improving mental wellbeing, helping to keep your mind and body healthy and well. “Wellbeing is about feeling good and functioning well” (Wellbeing: Why It Matters to Health Pol-icy, Jan 2014 The Dept of Health). Feeling happy inside is a positive state of mind to have and al-lows us to enjoy life. There are many benefits of improving your mental wellbeing including: length of life, reduced illness and increased recovery. Connect, Be Active, Keep Learning, Give to Others and Be Mindful are the five recognised ways to wellbeing recommended by the NHS - www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/improve-mental-wellbeing. Here are some ideas of ways to access the 5 ways in our parishes. Be Mindful: Mindfulness is a popular phrase at the moment and it is considered to be taking the time to enjoy the now. Instead of thinking about what happened in the past or worrying about the future or multi- tasking - take the time to stop and think about the simple pleasures of life. Listening to the rain on the window and tracking the path a rain drop, feeling the warmth of a cup of tea as it passes into your system, listening to the birds singing, spending time tasting your food instead of watching the tv or completing your work as you eat. Placing your feet on the floor, sitting still and noticing things around you will help “ground” yourself when you are felling anxious or in panic. There are many meditation and mindfulness sessions for free on the internet but if you are not online, choose some relaxing music and practice some square breathing. Breathe in for a count of 5 seconds, encouraging your lungs and belly to expand. Focus on feeling the air enter your body. Hold for 5 seconds and then exhale from the mouth for a count of 5, visualising pushing all the air from your body. Wait for 5 seconds and repeat for about 10 breaths. You can use the time to pic-ture yourself somewhere relaxing and pleasurable, like the beach, by a lake or in a forest. Connect and Keep Learning by joining a parish group such as a local history group in the evening, join the weekly coffee morning or men’s shed, attend the Talking Café or your local carers group. Be Active by trying some Age UK Tai Chi and gentle Yoga or dance for about £4 a session. Ask me for further information. Spring is an ideal time to access the green space around us, and being out in nature has a powerful positive effect on our wellbeing. (BJPsych International publication 2017 Nov). Make use of walking, gardening, try a park run, allotments or volunteer with your parish to keep community areas tidy. Doctor’s surgeries and Dementia Action Alliance groups run health walks with a range or abilities. Check on line or ask at the surgery. You can Give to Others in easy and cost free ways – be there for someone who needs a friendly ear, walk a friends dog if they are unable to, or donate your time to a local charity or group such as your local carers group. People giving their own time to support others have an increased sense of wellbeing and satisfaction – helping others can help you! Look in your local publications for local wellbeing co-ordinators for shared meditation, mindfulness and other wellbeing support or try the Somerset Wellbeing Directory. https://wellbeingsouthsomerset.org Village Agents work with people of all ages and deal with a wide variety of issues although a consid-erable number of our clients are elderly and involves social care issues. Helping to solve these prob-lems may ultimately help the elderly to remain living independently for longer. Agents also have the role of helping to shape services by feeding back to the appropriate body information about gaps in current services e.g. transportation. They can also motivate and support a community to respond to a local need by working together to address issues e.g. by helping them to set up a coffee morning for a group of lonely people or start a volunteer car scheme.
