  • RATS (Ruishton Artists in TexStyles) We are a group of craft enthusiasts who work with fabric and thread. We are now meeting on the 3rd Mon of each month 10.00a.m. - 3.00p.m. in the Village Hall meeting room. For more information about our regular meetings ring Lydia (444982)

TAUNTON & DISTRICT FRIENDSHIP CLUB We are a club offering a wide range of social activities for the over 50s, including a monthly meeting at Ruishton Village Hall. For more information contact Sally (442733).

Ruishton Book Club Ruishton Book Club Our book this month was 'Lorna Doone', by RD Blackmore. This classic novel was not a quick read, the feedback however was very positive. Everyone enjoyed the lyrical prose, depth of character and range of emotions found in its pages. The locality of the story was familiar to us all and we enjoyed the challenge of deciphering the tracts of pure 'Somersetshire' speech found in the unabridged version. It was judged a very pleasurable read. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 12th June at 10.30am, we will be discussing 'Driving Over Lemons' by Chris Stewart. For more information phone Peter 443160.

In Stitches @ St George's will meet this month on Friday June 14th from 10 – 12am in the Ruishton Church Meeting Room. Anyone who enjoys knitting or crotchet will be very welcome. Muriel 443019

So, could you help keep Ruishton & Thornfalcon a vibrant, good place to live by becoming a Parish Councillor? You could be in at the ‘grass roots’ level of Local Government and be involved in making things happen or getting things sorted! You could get local views about local is-sues brought to the attention of the powers that be. Being a councillor, you would attend meetings and generally keep up to date with things or you could be more active and take on a responsibility in an area that interests you. Any person interested in becoming a Parish Councillor should contact the Heather Bryant by phone 01460 234770 or e-mail [email protected] for more information. Or speak to a present Councillor. SOMERSET COUNTY COUNCIL – ENVIRONMENTAL MAINTENANCE INFORMATION 2019 Grass Cutting – Highway verges are cut to a minimum of one metre in width from the road side. Sight lines are also cut at road junctions and bends to ensure better visibility for road users and pedestrians. Each high-way verge and junctions will be cut once during the season except A and B road junctions’ visibilities which will be cut twice. Grass cutting programme is: A & B roads (including visibility splays) 6 May – 2 June C and unclassified roads 3 June – 26 July A & B visibility splays only Early/Mid-August There is new web page www.travelsomerset.co.uk/grass-cutting that tells you what roads will be cut and gives the running order for the work per parish. You can also stay up to date with the highways team by fol-lowing @TravelSomerset on Twitter. Weed spraying – Under the Noxious Weed Act 1959, certain noxious weeds, including ragwort must be re-moved where they are reported as causing a nuisance to highway users and adjoining landowners. Other invasive species treated and controlled by the County Council are Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Knot-weed, Himalayan Balsam and Giant Hogweed. If you spot any noxious or invasive weeds growing on the highway network you can report them online: www.somerset.gov.uk/roads Hedges – The majority of hedges bordering the highway are privately owned. Landowners and occupiers are responsible for the maintenance of their boundary, except between 1 March and 31 July (bird nesting sea-son) to make sure their hedge, tree or shrub does not obstruct the highway user or lines of sight at junctions. Land owners must also remove any debris from the road surface to prevent nuisance and to stop it blocking surface water drainage systems.
