RATS (Ruishton Artists in TexStyles) We are a group of craft enthusiasts who work with fabric and thread. We are now meeting on the 3rd Mon of each month 10.00a.m. - 3.00p.m. in the Village Hall meeting room. For more information about our regular meetings ring Lydia (444982) TAUNTON & DISTRICT FRIENDSHIP CLUB We are a club offering a wide range of social activities for the over 50s, including a monthly meeting at Ruishton Village Hall. For more information contact Sally (442733). Ruishton Book Club read Alexander McCall Smith's 'Espresso Tales'. A series of tales describing the everyday lives of the residents of a town house (44 Scotland Street, Edinburgh), the second of such books based on AMS's Scotsman column. A gentle read of wry humour and human insights, with the undoubted star being the 6-year-old Bertie and his struggles to be a 'normal' little boy. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 8 January at 1030 discussing Dava Sobel's 'Longitude'. For more information phone Peter, 443160. “In Stitches @ St George's” This year for the first time, the group created Christmas decorations for the Children's Wards at Musgrove Park Hospital. We made and presented a selection of knitted chains, bunting, baubles and a banner which we will hope to add to in the future. The group has also re-assembled part of the “life-sized” nativity scene made in 2016 Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus (plus the sheep) have illustrated the Christmas story in the chapel of Musgrove Park Hospital. Next meeting is on Friday Jan 10th.

We had a useful discussion to see if we could improve what we offer to residents and thought it might prove useful to have a further meeting. Unfortunately we do not know who all the coordinators are or what areas are covered by Neighbourhood Watch within Ruishton. If any of the other coordinators would be interested in coming to a meeting please would they let me know. We would plan to meet on a weekday evening sometime in the new year. Anyone else who may be interested in joining us, particularly if they are not currently in a Neighbourhood Watch scheme within Ruishton, would be very welcome. Please contact Nigel Gooding 01823 443637.

RUISHTON AND THORNFALCON PARISH COUNCIL CASUAL VACANCIES There are three vacancies on the Council. So, could you help keep Ruishton & Thornfalcon a vibrant, good place to live by becoming a Parish Councillor? You could be in at the ‘grass roots’ level of Local Government and be involved in making things happen or getting things sorted! You could get local views about local is-sues brought to the attention of the powers that be. Being a councillor, you would attend meetings and generally keep up to date with things or you could be more active and take on a responsibility in an area that interests you. Any person interested in becoming a Parish Councillor should contact Heather Bryant by phone 01460 234770 or e-mail [email protected] for more information. Or speak to a present Councillor. INAPPROPRIATE PARKING AROUND THE SCHOOL Inappropriate parking in the vicinity of the School during drop-off and pick-up times is a real problem, despite the signs and line markings on the road. The signs and lines together mean that these restrictions can be enforced. Also parking on corners and vehicles going too fast for the conditions (young children walking) are also a problem. There will be Police present and Enforcement Officers (Traffic Wardens) from time to time to monitor the situation and apply the law if required. If you have to use your car for school runs, please park appropriately, watch your speed and please think of other residents who live in the vicinity of the school. SOMERSET COUNTY COUNCIL – AVATAR ROBOTS County has secured funding for 50 AV1 Robots to help youngsters who are off school for medical or anxiety reasons. The AV1 is an avatar robot that becomes the pupil’s ‘physical presence’ in the classroom while the pupil accesses the robot from hospital or home, allowing them to take part in class lessons through an inbuilt camera and microphone, and also letting them maintain school friendship groups who buddy up and look after the AV1 during the school day. The robot works through live streaming (which cannot be recorded) to the pupil’s tablet or phone and allows the teacher and youngster to communicate with each other so they can keep up their education while physically away from school. The impact of young people being out of ed-ucation for a long time can be huge and becoming socially isolated can also become a major barrier to re-engagement once the young person is well enough to attend school again. SOMERSET COUNTY COUNCIL- VOLUNTEERING. If you are above the age of 18, have a clean full driver licence and own a four-door car, why not volunteer for Somerset County Council to help others get to vital medical appointments. By committing as little as one day a week, you could greatly help a person who otherwise wouldn’t be able to make appointments. Volunteer drivers provide crucial transport service for non-emergency NHS patients and social care users enabling them to get to various locations across the county and further afield. You could help transport chil-dren to college or to school providing a crucial service to a young person’s academic career. Each journey connects people with services they would otherwise miss out on. As a volunteer driver, you would be providing a vital lifeline to people in your community. This is a rewarding opportunity to provide a valuable, practical support for people within your community and your mileage expenses will be reimbursed at up to 50p per mile. You will also be supported by a Transport-ing Officer from Somerset County Council’s Transporting Somerset Team. Not only will you be helping the community, it’s an excellent way of meeting new people. To find out more visit https://volunteering.somerset.gov.uk/opportunities/volunteer-driver or call 0300 123 2224 D COUNCIL 2020 15.1.20 5.2.20 4.3.20 1.4.20 6.5.20 Please note that the January 2020 meeting will be held on the third Wednesday of the month and not the first Wednesday (Bank Holiday) Council Meetings commence at 7.30pm (unless otherwise stated) and are held in Ruishton Village Hall. There is an opportunity at 7.30pm for the public to make comments or ask questions. A full set of minutes can be seen our website at www.ruishton.org.uk Parish Clerk: Mrs Heather Bryant, Northay House, Northay, Chard. TA20 3DN. Tel: 01460 234770. UPDATE Thank you to everyone who has contributed to developing our Neighbourhood Plan during 2019 especially the representatives from within the parish who voluntarily form the Project Team and the Steering Group. During this coming year we are planning to consult with you all on the policies that will form part of the parish’s Neighbourhood Plan which will enable us to then complete the drafting of the full plan. Keep a lookout during this year for your opportunities to again comment on, contribute to, and have your say, all of which will help form our final plan. If you would like to find out more about your Parish Neighbourhood Plan, please visit the Parish website www.ruishton.org.uk

Keep well this winter

Eating a wide range of vegetables, fruit and protein will help you keep well this winter. Aim to eat a rainbow of fruit and vegetables to make sure you get a broad range of vitamins and min-erals. And try to eat at least two portions of fish a week (including at least one portion of oily fish – bring on the tuna sandwich!). Make sure you drink lots of water and keep well hydrated. The government recommends drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water every day. Keep active. Regular exercise is important for your health and wellbeing and will help you keep well this winter. You don’t have to run a marathon, short walks can help you to keep well. And just in case you do fall ill, make sure your medicine cabinet is ready ? Your pharmacist can advise you on which medicines you should have in your cabinet to help you and your family through winter.
