What is an accredited scheme?

• It is a quality assured route to Professional Registration

• It should provide the necessary training, development and work based learning to support candidates from the point of entry onto the scheme through to the point of Professional Registration

• This training will typically span 4-6 years from entry onto the scheme for a new graduate with an exemplifying degree who is seeking CEng

• Registration categories are usually Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Chartered Engineer (CEng)

• Schemes may include Engineering Technician (EngTech) and Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech) where a formal apprenticeship is not available

University of Bristol 26th Feb 2013

Minimum scheme requirements

• A sponsor who manages the scheme at a strategic and budgetary level

• A coordinator/administrator who manages the scheme at an operational level

• Candidates who should maintain Professional Development records

• Mentors (ideally IEng/CEng) who should be trained in soft-skills & UK-SPEC and who should formally meet with candidates on a regular basis

• A scheme manual describing: – Operational aspects

– Processes to provide a structured pathway to Professional Registration

– Descriptions of the roles and responsibilities of participants

− IEng

− Eng Tech

− ICT Tech

Chartered Engineer

Chartered Engineers are characterised by their ability to develop

appropriate solutions to engineering problems, using new or existing

technologies, through innovation, creativity and change.

They might develop and apply new technologies, promote advanced

designs and design methods, introduce new and more efficient

production techniques, marketing and construction concepts, pioneer new

engineering services and management methods.

Chartered Engineers are variously engaged in technical and commercial

leadership and possess effective interpersonal skills.
