Nonprofit organizations also used social media to their advantage. Oxfam America and the American Red Cross raised millions of dollars in the days after the earthquake by encouraging supporters to repost news about their relief efforts. “We’ve been able to spread the ShelterBox message further than it’s ever gone before because of Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter,” says Tommy Tonkins, communications officer for the UK-based disaster relief organization, which is supported by Rotary clubs.

Yasser Assem created a page on Facebook for Rotary in Egypt in 2007; it now has more than 1,100 fans – people who get updates from a Facebook page. They use it to follow what’s going on in District 2450, which has clubs in nine countries across three continents. It’s also a useful (and free) way for the district to reach an untapped audience. “We have increased attendance, solicited more donations from non-Rotarians, including from the corporate world, and sparked greater interest in membership,” Assem says.
