President’s Report

by Peter McCarthy Dear friends,

These are unprecedented times in our history. The COVID-19 global pandemic is having a significant impact on the very fabric of society, and the way we live our lives. Indeed, we are in unchartered waters. With no vaccine for coronavirus on the horizon, the restrictions and adjustments we are experiencing, are the ‘new normal’. Even though none of us is enjoying all this disruption to everyday life, I’m afraid we are going to have to get used to it, just like our parents or grandparents did during WW1 (1914-1918), the Spanish ‘flu (1918-1920), the Great Depression (1929-1939), WW11 (1939-1945) et al. Perhaps we can learn a thing or two from them about resilience, sacrifice, and overcoming adversity and hardship. More than ever, we need pull together, and support one another, especially the most vulnerable and fragile members of our local communities. As my late Father used

to say my 4 siblings and myself, “we are all in this together”.

Already we have seen the postponement or cancelation of so many events and gatherings, the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo being the latest casualty of the coronavirus. Every event at the Rocklea Showgrounds for 2020 has been cancelled. GreazeFest (July 31-Aug 2) at the Redland Showgrounds at Cleveland (on the beautiful Redlands Coast) has been postponed indefinitely.

As a responsible club, we too need to adhere to the rulings of the Federal Government and do our bit to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Consequently, our monthly meetings and monthly club runs are now suspended until further notice. As far as All Holden Day (29th November) is concerned, I don’t think we need to make a decision just yet. It is still 8 months away. At the moment I would suggest that we continue to make preliminary preparations up until we are asked to pay for the hire of the Redland Showgrounds at Cleveland in June. By that time, we should be in a better position to decide to proceed or postpone.

In the meantime, continue to practice social distancing, and wash your hands regularly. Moreover, spread joy, not germs!

Until February, keep Holden on!

QHMC (Qld. Historic Motoring Club): Cheryl Nott Incorrect reporting in Vintage Car Club Magazine re Tom Lewis, the wording was ‘resigned’ and ‘committee’ when the wording should have been ‘stepped aside’ and a delegate’ and also not recorded in minutes when it was. QHMC has 103 affiliated clubs. QHMC order of objectives in constitution remain unchanged. TMR meeting 22nd April – any issues or problems please speak to Albert who is attending. Qld parliamentary motoring recreational activities hearing was on the 16th Feb and 3rd March. Net lot will be the 16th and 30th March. Sth Qld QHMC really in Toowoomba is 2nd to 6th May with

90 entrants attending. 1990 vehicles are now 30 years old and are eligible for SIVS rego (1990 airbags last 10 years). AHMF report, given by Albert Budworth that the AGM is Friday 4th September 9am to Sat 5th Sept 1pm. Agenda items to be in by 30th June. The value of the historic vehicle movement has on Aust. economy estimated over $3.4 billion so needs an active Parliamentary friend on heritage motoring to promote mobile museum. Vehicles are part of the Australian history.

All Holden Day:

There is no news to report at the moment but it is important to keep the Holden car show going. General Business: Show and Tell: Cheryl N. passed around her written stats on all Office Bearers since the FX FJ Holden Club started in 1976. Shane K. also has these stats as an electronic version. Some stats to date are: President Peter McCarthy 4yrs Secretary Tineke Whitten 7yrs Treasurer Donna Hinds 18 yrs Technical Tony Manganaro 22yrs President Pete’s Joke of the month: No one believes seniors….everyone thinks they are senile!! An elderly couple was celebrating their sixtieth wedding anniversary. The couple had married as childhood sweethearts and had moved back to their old neighbourhood after they retired.

Holding hands, they walked back to their old school. It was not locked, so they entered, and found the old desk they’d shared, where Andy had carved ‘I love you, Sally.’ On their way back home, a bag of money fell out of an armoured car, practically landing at their feet. Sally quickly picked it up and, not sure what to do with it, they took it home. There, she counted the money – fifty thousand dollars! Andy said, ‘We’ve got to give it back.’ Sally said, ‘Finders keepers.’ She put the money back in the bag and hid it in their attic. The next day, two police officers were canvassing the neighbourhood looking for the money, and knocked on their door… ‘Pardon me, did either of you find a bag that fell out of an armoured car yesterday?’ Sally said, ‘No’. Andy said, ‘She is lying. She hid it up in the attic’. Sally said,’ Don’t believe him, he’s getting senile’. The agents turned to Andy and began to question him. One officer said: “Tell us the story from the beginning.” Andy said, ‘Well, when Sally and I were walking home from school yesterday…’ The first police officer turned to his partner and said, ‘We’re wasting our time here.’ Meeting Closed: 8:30pm. Next meeting is on 13th April.

The following article is reproduced with permission of Adrian Grant, President of The Early Ford V8 Club. “How many of us have been asked the question in reference to pollution ‘Why are you driving this old car, you should buy a new one?’ The information available is that for each car built there are 25 tonnes of waste, 422 million cubic metres of polluted air in raw material extraction plus a further 25 million cubic metres of polluted air for its production. If you run your old say 4litre car for 15,000km a year, it will take around 1.7 million years before giving off the same amount of pollution as making a new car! These sorts of figures should encourage us to nurture and use our old and older cars and not buy new ones. The number of electric cars in the world passed the 2 million mark last year and the International Energy Agency estimates there will be 140 million electric cars globally by 2030 if countries meet Paris Climate Agreement targets. This electric vehicle boom could leave 11 million tonnes of spent lithium-ion batteries in need of recycling between now and 2030. In the EU at present as much as 5% of lithium-ion batteries are recycled! The cost of fully recycling the batteries at present outweighs the value of the materials recovered. Until this is reversed there is no incentive to recycle. It certainly is thought provoking and not quite as simple as some would have us believe.”

Name: Michael Ross & Lee McHugh

Place & date of birth: Southport, Gold Coast 28th December 1967

How long have you been a member: 2018

Suburb you reside now: Hawthorne

What was your employment background: I have been working in Newspapers since 1986. I started out as a Darkroom Technician - hand processing film and prints. I did a Cadetship as a Photographer and became a Photographer specialising in sport photography. I am currently a Pictorial Editor. I have been working for News Corp for 34 years.

Type & details of vehicle: 1954 FJ Special Sedan

Member Profile

How long have you had the vehicle: The FJ was my first car for my 17th birthday in 1984.

Did you purchase as is or restore it: The FJ was my first car for my 17th birthday. I drove the car to school each day and, on Friday afternoons, some of the school’s borders would pile into the car to escape for the weekend. I got into trouble for doing this, so I had pick everyone up outside the school grounds. I drove the car as my daily drive until the age of 22. The car was then driven parochially over the years and parked in storage for 25 years. Over the years I was going to restore the car but never got around to it. I decided to have the car restored for my 50th birthday. The car went through a frame-up restoration to original condition.

What was your first experience with Holden’s: My Dad and Granddad both always had Holdens when I was growing up, except dad did buy a V8 Ford Fairlane at one stage. I think I became attached to Holdens when my twin sisters were being brought home from hospital in 1970 in the EH. They were in the front seat in the bassinet and I was in the backseat. Dad drove through an S bend, and I slid across the seat, hit the door handle, and flew out the door. I ended up with stitches from the top of my forehead to my eye. My other great memory is that of me often standing on the front bench seat, with my arm around my Grandfather’s shoulder as he drove down the road.

What do you enjoy about being a member of the club: I have not been a member of any car club until now. I enjoy being part of a group where everyone has the same interest and going on club runs. From the first day I felt welcome in the club, and I enjoy the friendship with everyone.

Any other hobbies or interests: Photography, camping – especially watching bush TV, 4-wheel driving, and just getting out into the great outdoors. Hanging out with the grandkids. And, of course being a member of the club and driving my car on runs
