1. A PROFILE OF UAE
The UAE was ranked first as the country with the best quality of life in the Middle East andNorth Africa region by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) 2009 Quality of Life Index 34.Globally, the Quality of Life Index ranked the UAE 15th in the world out of 160 countriessurveyed. This reflects the prosperity the UAE has seen in the past years and the result of theongoing strategic initiatives by the UAE government across all sectors including economy, security, health and education. The UAE ranking was based on the country’s impressive civicdevelopment and administration and high GDP growth, as well as family and health careservices, life expectancy, and safety and security. All that has been offered and achieved so farin terms of improvements in the standard and quality of life reinforces the sound policies, initiatives, and procedures adopted by the UAE in support of various economic and socialactivities which will further enhance its rankings in the coming years, placing the UAE in thetop 10 countries globally in terms of its quality of life.
A view of the skyline of Dubai, the financial capital of UAE
The future outlook of the UAE economy depends on the future price of oil and the success ofits diversification strategy into non-oil high-value manufacturing and service sectors. The
UAE has diversified its economy. Non-oil sectors now make up approximately 70 per cent ofGDP. This will help to make the country’s revenue sources more balanced and create asustainable economy that can withstand long-term oil price volatility. Dubai is the region’sbusiness, logistics, media and leisure hub.
Trade is extremely important to the UAE’s economy; the value of exports and imports takentogether equals 176 per cent of GDP. The average applied tariff rate is 3.2 per cent. In general, foreign investors may own majority stakes in companies outside of ‘free zones’. State-ownedenterprises distort the economy. The financial sector provides a full range of services, but thestate presence is considerable. Capital markets are open and vibrant.
In Dubai, six ‘strategic thrusts’ were identified, namely, travel and tourism; financial services;professional services; transport and logistics services; trade and storage; and construction, thus maintaining the focus on high-value sectors that boost overall economic growth.
The UAE has traditionally pursued an aggressive free trade policy for deeper integration intothe global trading system.
It is currently considered one of the top destinations among talented people around the world, thanks to its competitiveness and the high standard of living it provides to its citizens andresidents. This transformation corresponds to the progress happening in internationaleconomic and strategic relations at the levels of globalization, competition and open markets.
Before the 1960s, food consisted mainly of fish, rice, bread, dates, yogurt, homegrownvegetables, and meat from sheep, goats, and camels. The diet has improved in quality andvariety, with modern supermarkets offering imported foods.

Each of these forms of spices is used in particular dishes to give themthe distinct flavor and aroma. Restaurants, fast food joints and residents are some of thelargest clients of the spice industry.

Questions on availability of organic spices and spices in whole/powderedform were received and answered. The visitors were directed to the co-participating exportersfor their individual attention.
The inquiries received are delineated in Annexure I.
3.2.1 Visitors’ Feedback
The visitors appreciated the way in which participation of Board was organised in the show and were content on receiving answers to their specific queries. Some of the observations noticed and gathered during the fair are as follows:
1. Dubai-A Transit Point: Dubai acts as a transit point for trading of spices. Spices are eitherre-exported from here as such or are exported after further processing or value additions to Iran, GCC countries and African nations.
2. Cumin Adulteration: Some of the importers expressed immense displeasure on the qualityof cumin from India. It was also mentioned that Syrian cumin was better placed in terms of cleanliness and quality.
3. Deviation from Assured Quality: It was also pointed out by the buyers that the quality of spice samples, especially of pepper and chilli, shown during exhibitions or the samples which are sent to them are of good quality. However, the consignments that they receive are of low quality.
4. Spices Board’s intervention: Most of the visitors requested for Spices Board’s help to ensure that the quality being displayed is the quality that they receive.
3.3 Feedback of Co-participating Exporters
The 14 exporters who co-participated with Spices Board were of the opinion that individualparticipation in separate stalls is really beneficial to them for catering to the needs of existingand new buyers. This has also helped the exporters to create new leads for further follow-upsfor materializing the demands. They expressed their interest to attend the show on Gulf FoodManufacturing with the Spices Board in the coming years.
3.4 Suggestions
It is suggested that a feedback form be made and distributed to the co-participants on the last day of the exhibition in order to receive valuable feedback and suggestions which can be taken into account while organising participation in subsequent events.
