create my main image for my music magazine. Whilst researching real media texts, for example Vibe magazine, I learnt that a generic convention within the main image is that the female gaze is a prominent feature within Pop magazines. In A2 I used a video camera. Whilst undergoing research into horror trailers a generic convention used was uncanny sound. In AS I did not need to take sound into consideration…

Research into Real media texts

My researching skills developed greatly from my AS to A2 portfolio. This was evidenced as we analysed print media in AS to moving image media in A2.

During the foundation portfolio we researched the conventions of British music magazines. The analysis of real British music magazines informed my understanding of generic music magazine genre conventions. I connoted this in my magazine by representing a sense of Britishness in my main Image; a rock girl screaming with headphones in her ears. This convention was informed by my research into existing media texts such as Kerrang.

The research skills acquired during my foundation portfolio aided my ability to recognise conventions in the horror magazine and horror posters. However, my skills further developed when analysing horror trailers as I analysed not only mise-en-scene and cinematography but also sound and editing techniques used in the Horror genre. My understanding of the horror genre conventions were applied to our trailer as we created a handheld, PoV cinematic style stereotypical of the horror genre as seen in the Blair Witch Project.
